I'm about to pay off a credit card and it has an annual fee. I want to close it so I don't have to worry about that annual fee but I know that it may/will hurt my credit.
Do you just remind yourself to pay that fee every year?

I always forget about my annual fee & when I get my statement I'm like "Ummmm what is this?!" and then remember. I'm no help.

@runsyellowlites: It's alright. I have another card that gets me everytime. I need to figure out what to do with this card and this other card that I'm about to pay off.

@bluestriped bee: if it's not your oldest card,
I'd probably just close it since it probably won't affect your credit score too much as long as your utilization ratio is low. If it is your oldest card, closing it will likely hurt your credit score so I'd keep it open since you said you might be getting a mortgage soon.

@sunny: Good point. It's actually a rather new card that I got within the last 5 years. I should close it. I have still have older cards. Although, I'm hoping to pay off all of my credit cards soon, so I might have to keep a card with an annual fee. I read that I need tell them to close my account in writing and to make sure they write 'closed by customer' on my account. Apparently it looks better.
Thanks you solved my current dilemma.

@bluestriped bee: Yes, you should definitely make sure that your credit statement reflects that the account was "closed by customer" if you cancel the card.
If you've had the card for a while and you are a good customer, I would call them and request that they waive the annual fee before closing the account. Back in my bad-credit days I had a card with an annual fee (it was all I could qualify for), and once I rehabbed my score and had been a customer of theirs for a bit I asked them to waive the fee and said if they didn't I would close the account. Been a no-fee card ever since. Worth a try!

@yoursilverlining: oh ya good point. There are sometimes cards you can downgrade to that don't have a fee. This is what I usually do, but make sure they won't run a credit check again because that can also lower your score.
