It's looking more and more likely that Trump will get the Republican nomination. If you typically vote Republican would you still vote that way if Trump is the nominee?

I honestly don't know what I'll do. I definitely will not vote for Hilary though.

@NavyRN2012: Agree... I really hope it doesn't come down to just Trump because its a big disgrace but I wont vote for Clinton either.

I would vote for him either way. He certainly does not always say things well - but the man has good ideas and has proven he can run large companies. I also appreciate that he is not a "politician".
Someone would have to have a gun to my head to get me to vote for either Democrat - and I still dont know that I could do it.

I've been wondering this too! I'm not a Republican, far from it in fact, but I have been wondering what normal, sensible, moderate Republicans would do if Trump was the nominee....
ETA: I did not vote in your poll as I read it as the question being directed at Republicans, not the general public!

@lawbee11: I'm a dem but I literally just had this conversation with a republican friend last week. Did you see that Micheal Bloomberg is considering running as an independent if it looks the the general election will be Trump or Cruz v Sanders? That makes things very interesting to me. I think he'll attract a lot of voters on both sides.

Even if the republican candidate isn't trump, I've been really liking Sanders a lot more this election. Not a fan of Hillary. But the republican candidates just do not impress me either. I'm not even sure where I stand anymore.

Perhaps it's wishful thinking, but I don't think it will be Trump. I would likely write in a respectable candidate if he gets the nomination.

@Madison43: I heard this morning that it was only Cruz on the R side that would get him to run. And Clinton on the Dem side...
I dont think he feels as confident about taking from Trump as he does taking from Cruz.

This scares me to no end. I can see the attraction to Trump but goodness no. And no to Clinton or Sanders. I'm disappointed this is the best our country has to offer.

@Madison43: I did see that...would definitely be interesting!

DH is an Independent who strongly leans and votes Republican, but he will not vote for Trump or Cruz for that matter. He'll just stay home. *I voted in your poll as DH.*
Every election dissatisifed people on both sides pick a candidate based on the saying "lesser of two evils." But, this election cycle it's so crazy just how much the frontrunners are so polarizing in their own parties. I bet we will have very low voter turnout.

Oooh, this is an interesting question! I'm trying to imagine if the Trump-crazy candidate were on the dem side. I think I'd go third party. I don't know if I can handle not voting at all, I like to vote. And I feel like a large third party vote is basically a form of protest, like neither of the mainstream candidates were acceptable, do better, haha.

My parents lean Republican and they will not vote for Trump. My dad will not vote for Clinton, so I'm not sure if he will vote at all if it comes down to the two of them.

@Madison43: DH and I were just discussing this. I'd vote for him in a heartbeat over trump/cruz or sanders (i'm a moderate dem)
GOLD / watermelon / 14076 posts
@MrsSCB: Yeah, if the roles were reversed I think I'd vote third party as well. I can't not vote!

DH is a Republican (I'm a hardcore Dem! Stay tuned for our sitcom) and while he was a Trump supporter at first, he says now he would vote for Sanders if it came down to them, but won't vote Clinton.
persimmon / 1483 posts
@Pirouette: me too. I think he'll gain huge support from moderate voters from all sides.

@Madison43: yup. the only problem is i think it could hand the election to trump if bloomberg can't pull enough votes to win. It would be really interesting to see what NY would do if it was sanders/trump though and he doesn't run - i actually think it could be the first time NY goes red in recent history. This election could really flip a lot of states from their typical leanings, given how polarizing some of the candidates are.
(sorry, this is kinda off topic from the original question haha)

I could never ever vote for Sanders or Clinton. But I also can't see myself voting for Trump. I would probably vote third-party.
I tend to consider myself more of a libertarian then I republican (but vote Republican because I know my vote doesn't really mean much to a libertarian candidate normally). But if these are the best options the main two parties can put forward, it might for once actually feel worthwhile to vote third-party.

This is the first presidential election that I can vote in after becoming a US citizen and I have no idea how I am going to vote!
I lean democratic on some issues (Healthcare & Gun Control) but then republican on others ( I work hard for my money and would like to keep as much as possible).
I'm just in "wait and see" mode. I will not vote for Trump, regardless.
nectarine / 2465 posts
I'm not sure I will even vote if that's the case! I'm suprised so many republican voters are saying they will vote for Sanders - he is the complete opposite of a republican.

@Pirouette: I do not see New York going red at all. Trump being from the city really has no bearing in this case. Could Bloomberg take New York? Possibly.
cantaloupe / 6059 posts
@MrsKRB: I've been shocked by that, too. I'm primarily a Republican leaning voter for fiscal reasons and Sanders as president freaks me out. I cannot imagine voting for him!

Not a republican so I didn't vote, but a lot of DH's family members are republicans and I know a lot of them would not vote for Hillary. I honestly have no idea who they would vote if Trump got the nomination. I didn't think they liked Trump either.
I still don't know who I would vote for (as a democrat) but Sanders is a bit out there for me. This might not be the best choice of words but Sanders is a bit too socialist or independent for me (does that make sense or are do they contradict each other?) I don't know about Hillary. We do agree on more things but I think I really need to figure out something that have been said about her.

RE: Republicans supporting Sanders...I found this article interesting:
pomegranate / 3331 posts
@meredithNYC: I agree that trump being from NYC has no bearing at all. I meant NYS as a whole though - i think NYC might support Sanders, if not overwhelmingly so. Upstate NY and other larger NY cities, I'm not so sure.
@coopsmama: agree with you! I am a democrat socially but somewhat republican leaning fiscally (or used to be, although the new brand of republicanism can't swing my vote), and Sanders as a president terrifies me, almost as much as Trump, who I think MIGHT try to reach across the table, as much as I wouldn't want to see it happen.

I haven't voted Republican but this election is weird. I know a fair amount of vocal Republicans and none of them want a Trump presidency even if they agree with some of his quips. I honestly think Rubio is going to be the nominee or vp nominee.
As for Clinton I have plenty of outspoken Dem friends and I've barely seen any support for her, and whenever anyone says/ writes something positive, there's never agreement and only others saying how much dislike her. And the person supporting her is only lukewarm on their defense. I don't really understand how the two 'front runners' have no support that I can tell except for their supposed polling numbers.

I'm a Democrat, so I didn't vote in the poll. If I was Republican, I wouldn't vote for Trump at all. I'm just curious though, why are people against voting for Clinton? Some of the responses relating to Clinton sound so vitriolic? Just curious why?
pomelo / 5084 posts
@lawbee11: Good question. I usually vote (R) but I cannot standdddddd DT. I have joked about writing in a candidate but truly I think I would vote for Sanders if it came down to those two!

@cascademom: start a new thread!
I'm only lurking to see who's voting for Trump.
hostess / wonderful apple seed / 16729 posts
@cascademom: My MIL hates what she did to the healthcare system. Also, they are pissed about her emails she hid, I think. Also, how Benghazi was handled. I think that's what I hear everytime Clinton comes on the TV.
coconut / 8861 posts
@mrsjazz: I probably should. I'm genuinely curious. My inlaws HATE Hilary as libertarians. My MIL only posts very biased Fox News articles about her. She hasn't mentioned any love for Bernie Sanders though. As for me, I'm on the fence on who I'm going to vote for.
