Why?
I bought one on clearance but haven't used it yet.
Is it so you don't have to scrub a messy pan?
Does it help with the cooking?

Makes clean up way easier, cookies don't stick and things cook somewhat more easily.

Easy clean-up! Everything just slides off of it. I do everything on it, including roasting veggies, potatoes, french fries, chicken nuggets, cookies, etc.

I usually use foil for cooking and parchment paper for baking. Stuff doesn't stick, and it's super easy clean-up. @mediagirl: But then how hard is the mat to clean?

@littlebug: it wipes clean with a rag or brush. SO easy!

I used to use one but found I prefer parchment paper for cakes and cookies. I put my silicone mats on the counter before kneading dough or rolling it out, and also to line baking sheets when I freeze individual portions of things like cookie dough. Even though I don't use it all that much for baking, it's still handy to have around!

Oh yes absolutely. I never use a baking sheet without a Silpat on it. Cleanup so much easier, and things don't stick.

I have a few silpats, love them! They came from BBB and I used coupons to get them cheaper.
