I worked from home and only saw my boss every few weeks. But I did wait until I could see him in person to tell him (after 12 weeks).

I used to work from home exclusively and I hadn't seen my boss in months. I told him by phone at the appropriate time because I wanted to give him as much of a heads up as possible.

I didn't tell until 16 weeks or so. I think it would be courteous to tell with a few months notice even if it has to be over the phone but I don't think you have to tell now. I wasn't particularly worried about anything I just don't like sharing very personal stuff at work that much.
