This is a question that I've always been fascinated by!
If you were financially independent and didn't have to make any money... would you still work? Or to put it another way:
If you won the lottery, would you still work?

I wouldn't work, but I would do a lot of volunteer work. Sitting at home with nothing to do depresses me.

I would still want to work, but I'd want to find a job with more flexibility so I didn't have the super long commute and limited time off I have now.

I assume you mean the big lottery...like $100 million? I would of course quit my current job. I would move to Hawaii where my parents live and have a much more relaxing life away from the NYC grind.

Hmmm... I like my job, but do I love it enough to continue working here after I won the lottery? Not sure. I think I'd want to continue working, because I like the social aspects of it. But maybe I would try to only work part time or something. And it would certainly give me more flexibility. If I got stuck working on something that totally sucked, I wouldn't feel trapped because I could always quit.
I might quit my job though and try to become a writer, because that was always my dream, haha.

Hell no. Lots of travel, lots of gardening, lots of volunteering. No more being a lawyer, though.

haha...@winniebee - hell no! I would travel, design our new house in the woods with no neighbors and a lake in the front yard, have more babies, do volunteer work, learn how to sew. I would also read. A lot.

I would probably volunteer for charities and non-profits part time.

I would probably work but definitely not in my current field. I'd love to be a writer!

I would continue working on a very very part time basis (like one day a week). I didn't spend all that time/money in school just to give it all up! And I think I'd appreciate my job more if I wasn't doing it for 40 hrs a week.

Nope. I wouldn't. Although I do well at my job, it doesn't fulfill me. I would travel, do stuff around the house, exercise, just chill out. Volunteering and community service-type stuff would be a great avenue for keeping active, too.

Absolutely not. I have an ever-growing list of things I'd like to do "if I just had more time" and I'd be busy doing all of those things instead of working.

I'm a workaholic and I honestly can't just stay home. I would probably travel more often and maybe volunteer my time if I won the lottery. I'm a scientist at pharmaceutical company and I enjoy what I do. I'm pretty sure I would continue to work but take a pay cut since I wouldn't need the income.

I'm with those who said hell no. I would spend most of my time traveling and seeing family and friends who I don't get to see very often anymore.

Another resounding HELL NO. I would volunteer, like others have said. I think I would get bored of sitting around doing nothing.

I'd be a beach bum. On my own private island. With staff
Honestly, I'd probably want to open like an animal sanctuary or something, and that would be my "work". It's always been my dream to work with animals, a la Jack Hanna, for example.

Heck no. I'd travel and give generously to different charities!
kiwi / 678 posts
Nope! I would volunteer for things I'm passionate about because I am the type of person who needs to stay busy, but I don't think I've ever had a fulfilling job that I loved so much I would want to keep working if I didn't need the money. I'd spend time with my family and travel and try to make the world a better place.

I would go back to school full time and work on a Phd, I've wanted to go back to school for a while, so I would definitely do that and of course travel, I love my job so I would do something related but with more flexibility

Yeah, that would be a big ol no! The husbone & I both want me to stay at home with the kids anyway, so that would be perfect But I guess we'd actually have to play... question is, would husbone continue working? We'd be a worker-less family! I think we'd end up buying land & farming & he would hunt & fish quite a bit. Ahh, what a lovely dream

I'm currently a SAHM, and I think that winning the lottery would give my husband the opportunity to stay at home with us too. I think we would probably invest the money into a business venture that would satisfy the perfect dream job for us.

Hells No!! I have a ton of hobbies to keep me busy. I'd also love to read more and volunteer (PTA, kid's activities, teaching crafts, etc.) more often.

My husband and I talk about this sometimes. He can't imagine not working at all, but he'd do something "fun" that he's always wanted to do (open a comedy club) and run ventures that didn't take too much time so that he can spend all day with me and the babies we'd be filling our huge house with!
