@Mamaof2: We don't because the space has to be dedicated to working in order to be deductible.

@ShootingStar: yes this would be a dedicated space
@dagret: is it a pain come tax time? - I am guessing you need to save everything!!

@Mamaof2: well if you have a mortgage deduction you already have the mortgage info. And our electric bill is our only energy bill so it's easy. Then we have a sewage bill but no water bill, so the only thing that varies is our electric bill and we can get those online.

I can claim the space used for my office and some household expenses (electricity, heating, etc.). I save all the bills and my accountant figures it out for me.

DH and I both work from home full-time, but we're on W2's not 1099's, and it is a benefit from our employers, so we weren't able to claim any deductions.
This is from the Turbotax FAQ regarding home office deductions:
"The home office deduction lets you deduct things like mortgage interest, insurance, utilities, repairs, and depreciation for the portion of your home used for business. It's available to homeowners and renters alike.
You may be able to claim the home office deduction if your office is used regularly and exclusively for your business and is your principal place of business. In addition, if you're working at home for an employer, your home office must be for the convenience of your employer – not just you.
This means if your employer lets you telecommute as an option, you can't take the deduction. However, if your employer doesn't have their own office or workplace, forcing you to work from home, you may be able to claim the deduction.
When you enter your home office information in TurboTax, we'll determine if you can claim the deduction and how much the deduction is worth."

@Mrs. High Heels: yes my office is closing down so I have no where to work, so it looks like I will be able to take it! Thanks!

We don't for the same reason as @Mrs. High Heels: its a perk of my job. My company has an office and I could work there, so I can't claim the home office deduction.
My husband was previously able to claim a home office deduction, and it was actually easy to figure out (using TurboTax). We use Mint.com and just downloaded the relevant transactions into a spreadsheet and input the totals.

DH just started working from home mid-April last year, so this was the first year we claimed it. Our accountant did some deduction that's standardized based on square footage of your office? I'm not entirely sure, but we did take one!

I tried, but it depends on how often you work from home, how big the "office" is etc, and I didn't qualify. Hopefully you can claim this!
