My mother's birthday is a few days before, and we have always celebrated, day of. She told me that as a kid, they would have festivities early, before everyone left town for the holidays. She loved for her childhood parties to be Christmas themed, and never wanted to wait until January.

My sister's birthday is two days before Christmas, so my mom has her party in early december. She never wanted people to give her one gift for both Christmas/birthday as that wasn't fair to her, so she intentionally makes it two separate events

Mine is 3 days after Christmas, and I've always hated it! My parents tried having parties before and after my birthday, but sometimes they still flopped. It was always hard to time because lots of families go out of town for the holidays. I think before is better, because people are in a festive mood and looking for reasons to celebrate. After Christmas, everybody's tired and wants to stay home to recover.

@allison: I have 3 good friends with mid/late Dec babies and they already have their party dates set...12/21,12/28, 12/29! My LO has a bday close to yours...maybe I should aim for 12/14 or 1/4!

My poor DH is Christmas eve. We usually do the first half of the day as his birthday with dinner (his favorite meal) and birthday cake for dessert. Then it is Christams Eve from that point on.
We are due on 12/15 and I just hope he is early enough that his birthday will be separate from the holidays.

My birthday is really close to Christmas and I never had birthday parties because of it. Just family-only ones.

@autumnlove: I never minded because my parents and grandparents always made a HUGE deal over my birthday because of it

Mine is 5 days before Christmas and I always hated it when I was younger bc no parties due to busyness of holidays.
In college, my friends decided to throw me a surprise party but bc it was so close to finals and people leaving for holidays, they threw it like on December 2nd. It was definitely a surprise.

Mine is a week before Christmas. As a kid, my parents always had family over the weekend before. Sometimes I got to have my birthday parties with friends over Christmas break. As a teenager, my family celebrated my birthday on Christmas Day. It never bothered me!

DS's is 12/29 and DD is due 12/19...Not sure what we will do. So far for DS we have just had very small family birthday celebrations on the day of. We aren't that into the holidays though, so I think the birthday will be a bigger deal than Christmas.
My brother is 12/21 and sometimes he had school and sometimes he did not, depending on the year. I think he had a few birthday parties as a kid, but mostly just family things on the day of his birthday.

@allison: This is what I'm afraid of. DS was born 3 days after Christmas! I think I'll try to hold his 1st birthday party either in early December or sometime in mid-late January.

I forgot to add that MIL's bday is ON Christmas and we are usually forced to celebrate it on the day of. And it has to be about her, not christmas. I can kind of understand but you are 50+....do you really need to force your kids and grandkids to go to the casino on christmas to celebrate?!

Oh yes. January, February....whenever! And you know what? I loved it. Gave me something to look forward to.
Holidays in general are flexible like that in my family.
