If your child was going to be riding a bus - say they were going on a field trip with their preschool class - would you install a carseat into the bus for your child to sit on? Or would you let them ride on the bus seat?

Well 1st off there isn't a way to install a car seat so there's that
2nd - I was concerned the 1st time DS took a field trip at age 4.5 on a bus - they actually passed out information showing that buses are safe and kids over 4 do not need car seats - I was still nervous but it made me feel a little bit better

Are we talking about the regular yellow buses, with the high flat seat backs?

@Mamaof2: someone I know told me they installed a carseat in a bus for a field trip!

DS1 is on his first field trip today with his preschool and on a big yellow bus. He's not in a carseat on the bus and I'm fine with it.

@Mamaof2: I'm not sure - all anyone ever says is "bus". Maybe it's a daycare provided bus and they allow that? My daughter calls those "mini busses".

My daughter went on 2 field trips and the "bus" they were on allowed car seat installation. The center does have a mini bus but I'm almost positive they rented a big yellow bus because both the 3 and 4 yo rooms went.
@Mamaof2: there are yellow buses now that have harness installed!

@regberadaisy: oh wow! I wonder if its for little kids or if buses aren't as safe as they thought?

No, probably not. She's never been in a car seat on a city bus, either.

I'm not sure the seat belts on school buses can even be used to secure a car seat! I've never seen anyone use one.

No our kids were in buses a fair amount last summer (at 3 and 5 yo) and they didn't have car seats then.

@regberadaisy: did all of the kids ride in their carseats?

I am going to go with no, as long as the bus isn't driving on the highway. I understand compartmentalization is what makes school busses safe, and I am okay with that on the roads in town, but I am not so convinced at higher speeds, with tractor trailers and whatnot on the roads.
Plus car seats are not designed for use in those old style busses (I am not sure if the belts are retrofitted) and I'd be concerned that if installed in the bus, the location of the seat in front would be a problem.
I might also opt to drive my kid there, in my own car, if that was allowed.

My son takes the bus every day! And no carseat. There are some installed but I think only for kids who are tiny 3 year olds. He has never used it. In my mind, any crash that could really hurt a big yellow bus would probably be like so catastrophic that even a carseat wouldn't help.

We went on a tour bus one day on vacation when DS was 2.5 months. We had his car seat in the seat with me and I held tight to it, tho it was supported by the front and rear of the seat backs. We needed it for his stroller anyway. There wasn't anyway to secure it. For daycare trips, I think it would depend on their age. I'd be more comfortable with an older toddler not belted in on a bus. Just as they wouldn't be on a city bus.

Not in the US but I have had to install a carseat in a bus for them to be allowed to take us (that was Italy).

@mediagirl: yup, all parents dropped off their car seats on the morning of. The hallway was lined up with them!

Our new state regulations require any "bus" or "van" have shoulder belts. So in that case I would drop off a booster seat and maybe let her use it with just the belt (no install required). at that point.

For field trips we always bring the car seat. Everyone does. You can strap it in with the seat belt.

DH and I took a tour a few years back of a few farms. The event included transportation on a school bus. It had harnessed seat belts like the link above. I was pleasantly surprised when I first saw them.
