We have a unique setup where we (or at least one of us) are able spend the afternoons with them after school. Very thankful for that.

charlie goes to an after school program, but i'm fortunate enough to work from home so lately i pick him up early at least two times a week.

DS doesn't attend but there's a daycare across the street from his school where a lot of kids go before and after (a teacher walks them over). DS always asks me if he can go, haha. I would say 75% of his class goes there. Having both parents WOH is more common today than it was 20-30 years ago so seeing more classmates go to those type of care programs might be easier on kids.

Only pregnant but I was in after school care and It was fine. Through K or first grade I went to a babysitter after achool. Then we moved and my mom contracted with neighbors who had 4 kids that were high school aged and they watched me after scool (either my house or theirs) until I was about 9, then I was home by myself for the couple hours after school until Mom got home.

@Adira: Yes, that's partly my concern as well, with homework and afterschool programs. My son isn't the type to sit and do homework (I can tell already) if there are there are other temptations around and with an early bedtime, I feel like there aren't enough hours between coming home, dinner and bed!

@DillonLion: I feel your pain. I got to go home and play after school because my mom taught and she was home with us after school. My kid will have to go to aftercare and I'm sure she'll be jealous of the kids who get to go home and play - and the kids who get to lounge around all summer while she has to go to camps and whatnot all summer long.

We're a few years from this yet, but our plan is continue to send them to the before/after school program at the daycare we're currently in. They set aside time for homework before they can go out and play.
