DS has gone to my moms for a week.... two would probably be pushing it for my comfort level.

Although there was a job offer that DH was looking into that would have had us needing to move right after the wedding (April) and DS would've still been in school (till May). We did start weighing out DS staying here with my mom to finish school, but it wasn't something that I liked & DH didn't go with that position so we didn't have to think about it too much.

I wouldn't send my LO away without me and only to my parents' house. I wouldn't go live with my in-laws. However, my hubby and his brother (fraternal twins) were separated when they were born - each set of grandparents took one baby for, I think, the first 3 months.

Not for a month! A week maybe, but only if we were going somewhere and couldn't/didn't want to take the kids.

I don't have children, but I can't imagine going a month without my child! Not to be the obnoxious one who equates pets to children, but I can barely go a weekend without my dogs. My in-laws did offer to take our dogs if that would speed up the process of us having kids but we politely turned it down.

Nope! They'd spoil her too much. I wouldn't mind living with my parents for a month though! (with LO and DH too of course)

Have her for a longer period of time. My mom has suggested we can leave DD with her so DH and I could take a month long
Vacation. At 9 months I'm not ready to leave her for that long.

I remember from my childhood some of the best fun was when we stayed with my grandparents! So I definitely want LO to experience that!

Um no. Especially my inlaws. I could see him staying for a night or so but I remember staying at my grandparents for multiple nights and not really understanding why and being kinda upset. I think if we went on vacation I would just ask my mom to stay at our house. My inlaws on the other hand...no thanks.

My mom's only allowed to have my lo if I have a doctors appointment and when we eventually have a date night. Eventually they'll have sleepovers, But she'll be older and it will be one night, maybe a weekend. I hate leaving my lo!

@TKS-My nephew use to spend the summer with us from the time he was like 7 to about 17. My sister asked if she could have my daughter for a month next summer vacation and I've already penciled her in. lol

For a week, sure! A month... that's kind of pushing it. And I definitely would feel more comfortable if it was with my parents of my FIL & SMIL. My MIL... not so much. She's kind of crazy and we don't really see eye-to-eye on issues, so I don't think I want her having my kids for so long.

That being said, my MIL seems to think that she WILL be getting the kids for a month (or something) at some point (and we don't even have kids yet). She's been talking about taking all her grandchildren on a road trip to see a bunch of National Parks (and she's been badgering us to hurry up and have kids because the one grandchild she has is going to be "too old" by the time ours are old enough.

If I lived far from my IL's, and my child was school-aged, I don't think a month over the summer would be a big deal. I actually think that it's pretty common. As a younger child, I wouldn't go more than a week, though.

I think I'd wait until the baby was much older before I'd entertain the idea of family taking her overnight. Maybe a year or so. But even then, it's probably only be for a night or two. Once she's a toddler I'd love for my husband and I to go on an adult vacay. I'd definitely never let a parent take her for a month. I'd miss her terribly. And by parent I mean my mother and no one else. That sounds horrible but I wouldn't trust my MIL. She doesn't exactly make the best life choices, sorry.

PS. Not nice of your mother-in-law to test you. Isn't parenthood itself enough of a test?

@Miss Adia: I used to spend summers on my Aunt and Uncles farm from may 5or6 til they moved to Alaska at around 14. Those are still some of my best childhood memories.

My dad's mom seriously wanted my mom to send me to live with her every summer beginning when I was born. Three months out of every year. My mom was like, uhm no, I would miss her. You can have her for, like, a week at a time. My grandmother was very offended and hurt.

On the other hand, my MIL keeps one of our nieces for probably six weeks straight in the summer. But this particular niece has a crappy home life, and her parents aren't very invested in her, so I don't think they mind sending her. They also send her every Christmas and Thanksgiving, which I could never imagine doing.
