passes away... will you get another pet?
DH and I've agreed that we'll likely adopt dogs once our furbabies pass. Although it's not something we like to think about, and we're sad that these pups will be the dogs that DS will have to see pass away one day... we're a dog-loving family and will likely adopt more dogs.
FIL put down their dog (DH's dog from childhood) a few years back and refused to get another pet. As he didn't want to grow attached. He said babysitting our dogs is enough for him.

Absolutely; people have told me the best way to get over your lost pet is to get a new one; someone told me she had wanted to grieve and wait, but the house w/o a dog's presence was so unbearable and as soon as she got a new dog she felt so much better.

It depends....Although I very much love our dog, I think I would wait a while (maybe even a few years) before getting another one. We are gone a lot on the weekends and it always seems unfair to be dragging her around or leaving her with relatives. When I adopted her 7.5 years ago we lived a very different life than we do now.

I don't think we will ever not have a dog in the house. It wouldn't seem like home to me without one.

Definitely; DH wants to get a puppy before our current dog gets too old so she can be a role model for the puppy.

Once our cat dies we will likely take a pet break for a while 
Especially while babies are young.

We would, but would probably wait a few years until our kids were a little older. We currently have a very chill, laid back old man dog (11.5 years!), who is fine with the baby. DH wants to get a puppy eventually, and I am NOT having a puppy and a infant. Our plan is to wait until the kids are old enough to beg for one, then we can act like we are getting it for them, even though DH and I both definitely want to be a dog family 
@bushelandapeck: We have similar issues-- when I got my dog I lived near my family so it was easy to have someone mind him when we went away. Now I live pretty far and we only have BIL to watch him and it's much harder.

Our dog passed away last May and we didn't get a new dog. We still have our younger dog, though. When he passes away (hopefully not for a long time!) we will likely get another dog because we love having a dog and always want to have at least one!

yes, we would get other dogs, probably after a break. losing an animal is heartbreaking so i understand people who don't want to get another pet. we would choose to have the joy and heartache again, but it's a very personal decision.

@Foodnerd81: I just feel so bad for her sometimes. She's a lab and it's tough to take her everywhere because not everyone likes dogs, especially around kids. Ours is also a rescue so she has some issues with other dogs and some people so that always makes me nervous. I definitely want another dog someday, but both DH and I want to wait to get another until our kids are older and we're home more often.

Yes. We lost our pup in July and got another one shortly after. We still miss our dog, but the new dog has helped us grieve. I always want to have a dog in my house.

Yep, we lost one 1.5 years ago, and adopted a new one 2 months later. I lost my fur baby who was 13 after Christmas, and we adopted one 2 weeks later (could not pass up an offer, there was a litter of 10 lab puppies surrendered to a rescue and we took one). Now we have a 1.5 year old and a 3 month old! (and a baby on the way! Talk about timing!)

Probably not. I love my dog, but have since discovered that I'm pretty allergic and my quality of life has taken a mild downturn since getting him. I love him too much to get rid of him now that he's in my life, but I don't think I would choose to make that tradeoff again. I might consider a hypoallergenic dog, but even then I'm nervous...

It will all depend on how DD reacts, right now she loves her "Inley" and I think we would have to replace our pup for her. The idea of training another puppy scares me though, so we might have to adopt an already trained dog.

Depends on who can convince who in our relationship. I say YES, right away, while DH wants to wait until we're finished growing our family and kiddos are older. But our dog is only five, so will likely be with us for a while yet.

Although I don't think we could ever replace her in our hearts, I can't see us ever not having a dog. In the 10 years we've been together we've always had pets, and both of us have had dogs pretty much our whole lives.

I would be heartbroken (obviously) and I would want a period of time without a new dog but we would definitely get a new one. Most likely we would wait until the spring after our dog passes since it seems like a good time to start training a dog since we walk a lot.

Yes, we'll always have at least 2 dogs. I think we'll get a third sometime in the next 5 years because I want the overlap.

This is something we've talked about a lot, especially since our dog is up there in age and having health problems. We will always have A pet, but we might have a cat for a while after our dog passes away, and wait on getting another dog. We both absolutely want to have more dogs, but it would make more sense to wait until we're more settled to get another (ie in a house, not an apartment, etc.)

We had to let our pup go last year. We both still miss him so much.
We have a new pup now. He can't replace our last pup, but we love him just as much. I love dogs and we will always have one.

No. I love love love animals so I got the dog I always wanted when I moved out and he's been a handful. Now with LO here I definitely don't have enough time to care for him like he needs and it stresses me out. After he passes I won't have anymore pets.

I'm certain we will but it will probably take me a while. My first cat that was all mine passed away and I was so incredibly heartbroken I swore that I would never have another pet because I couldn't put myself through that kind of pain again. It took me about 9 months to feel ready to get another pet (a dog). Now I feel like I'm even more attached to my dog than I was to that cat because I've had him longer, and my husband had 2 cats who are super cuddly and I love to pieces. I'm honestly a bit worried because they are all around the same age and when they are all elderly I think it will be really stressful I think when any of them go it will take a long time to feel okay getting another.

Absolutely. We would get another rescue cat close to the age of out surviving pet. So it would likely be a senior cat, which would be most in need.

We plan to get a new one around the time our oldest is reaching an age where she probably won't have a lot of time left. We want a chance to get attached before we lose one, so it doesn't feel so much like a replacement dog. We'll continue to do the same with others. Having their ages just a little staggered helps because they won't all die at once. (I make it sound like we have so many. Just the two.)

Yes. My sweet kitty died suddenly last summer. I was completely blindsided and devastated but we adopted two kittens (siblings) shortly after Thanksgiving to keep our other cat company. All three are BFFs now! I think we'll probably always have a cat or two...or three, haha.

Oh, it's worth noting that we won't replace the cat. I'd like to, but only if I could find one that really had the personality I was looking for. My mom's cat is amazing, mine's annoying. DH would probably never have a cat again. I'd also like snake, but apparently I'm going to have to settle for the garden snakes in the yard, because he says NO WAY.

It breaks my heart to think about this, only because the day will come in the near future (my dogs are in great health, but are 14 and 16). I can't imagine ever not having a dog, though. I don't know how long we'd wait before getting another, though.

Not right away - As the kids are getting older and have more activities going on we aren't home as much - I feel bad enough leaving my older dog now and there isn't any way I would bring a new dog in the house and then be gone all the time (plus me and DH both WOTH)

One of our cats passed away in November and we plan to get a dog. So I guess my answer is yes, but not right away.
