I will! We will be traveling to NYC to spend Lunar New Year with my family. But even if we weren't I would still do something at home with LO. But it is always more fun & festive when we spend it with my family.
We do a HUGE NY's Eve feast, hot pot with crazy side dishes signifying luck & prosperity in the NY. Then New Year's day we'll be visiting family to hand out lai see.
I also plan to bring the celebration to LO's day care room!

I've always been in the habit of celebrating on January 1 because for some reason my family has always done it then! My extended family lives far away but we had our rice cake soup yesterday.

@spaniellove: LOL! Really? I have never heard of celebrating it on the American calendar. My family would balk at that! Are you not doing anything on the official Lunar Calendar New Year then?

@locavore_mama: You know I've never asked why we did it on the American calendar and now I want to know! I'm not sure I've ever done anything on the actual Lunar New Year but I try to get to the Korean market around then for the extra goodies!

Yup!! It's the ONLY holiday where all family is together from near and far. And it's not even mandatory, we just all convene together for this holiday! We don't even celebrate Thanksgiving or Christmas all together. Weird huh? We also do a HUGE feast. My aunt closes her restaurant a bit early and we load up her regular buffet with new year food. It's crazy and draws a family/family-friend crowd of more than 50 people!

We definitely will... we don't do a huge thing, just dress the kids up a little and maybe have dim sum and get some cash from the grandparents. I love that part

It's just me and my mom (and LO), so we'll probably grab dim sum to eat and hit up the Tet Festival (it'll be SUPER crowded, though, so not sure if I'll be up for it).
I'll dress LO in her ao dai I can't fit into mine because I'm KU.

We will be going to celebrate with my ILs, niece and nephew. It feels like it will be here in no time since Christmas just happened!

Easier for the younger generation. New years day is jist as important as lunar new yr and celebrated more in our krn household. Plus as small business owners NYD is a holiday for them so it's easier to get together

Yes, but only with my little family of 3. I'm thinking about going to some Chinese restaurant with big dragon pagodas at the entrance. It's at a super tiny town and I've always been curious about it. Or we'll celebrate at home with seafood and new year food.
It's the year of the wooden horse, right? I'm looking forward to it!

I would love to hear what you do. Next year well be staying home so I'll have to do all the cooking!
Can't take time off every year and this year I'll be taking off 2 days and Dh 4 since he works weekends.

@locavore_mama: Now that I think about it, maybe it was because it was guaranteed that everyone in our extended family (aunts/uncles/cousins) had the day off and we could all be in one place for the whole day. Plus there were days of cooking involved and over the holidays it was more likely that relatives could come from all over to help cook. So in my family, that might have been the reason?

Our family is all on the east coast so we won't be celebrating with family. We usually just go out for dinner at a chinese restaurant and give the kids red envelopes. Last year I made turnip cake at home to celebrate. I might do it again this year - or make some other celebratory new year dish - but turnip cake is my favorite. I also send red envelopes to LOs class with an origami animal inside.

I made the sticky cake that you use brown cane sugar for? Some put a red date in the middle? Eta: nian gao!

@locavore_mama: Haha, my sister and I was just talking about that. Our mom tries to give us recipes for the stuff she makes but all her recipes are "a little bit of this and little bit of that", with no measurements at all. I bought this book a couple years ago and the recipes seem to be pretty authentic based on the dishes I'm familiar with. I think I made the turnip cake off the recipe in the book. I also watch cooking videos on youtube.
