This may be a naive question, but why do infant car seats have weight limits? Is it the weight limit of the handle of the carrier? I understand height limits because the baby's head could be too near the top of the shell. Our infant seat goes up to 22 lbs and my 7 month old just reached that weight. I am NOT AT ALL going to compromise his safety, I'm just wondering what the weight limit is really for.

I think it depends on the car seat.
We have a Peg Perego and the height/weight limit is 30/30
Just kidding.
I have no idea why they have a weight limit..
I know it's hard for me to carry my 22lber in his car seat though! -
I'm not sure on this one, but I know my LO was too heavy for me to lug around far before he reached the "weight limit". It may have something to do with the rating of the harness in the event of a crash.

Assuming it is the load the seat has been tested to safely restrain in a crash? Either way, I moved LO to a convertible at 7 months. He was under the 30 pound weight limit but he was tall and obviously getting cramped!

I assume b/c that's what the limits for crash testing were too.
P outgrew her infant seat in length long before she outgrew it in weight & will likely outgrow her Combi the same way.
