Do you file your infant's nails or clip them with baby nail clippers? How often? When do you do it?
I've been filing at the peds recommendation, but it takes a while. Did you start with one and move to the other?

I filed until she was a few months old. Then I clipped once she was asleep. Once she started napping exclusively in her crib, I had to tackle them while she was awake (around 6 months) and I put on Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and did as many as I could at one time. It usually took a couple 'sessions'! lol.
now she's almost a year and I can do them super fast while she watches a show on my lap.

At 5.5 months I still file. She won't sit still long enough to let me clip. And the one time I did clip, I cut her finger and it bled

I clip them when he sleeps. I just do it when I realize they're sharp (usually after he grabs me and it hurts!). I hated filing so just started clipping immediately.

I clip while he's sleepy and nursing. I can only reach one hand this way, so I do the other hand in the next nursing session.

We started clipping right away. I just do it while she's nursing. They grow so fast!!!

Baby girl is still cooking, but based on a friend's recommendation we got the Zoli Buzz B. which seems amazing. It's like a tiny little dremmel that's flat with a little file for months 0-3, 3-6 etc. I tried it on my skin and it didn't hurt at all. We plan to use that but I also have regular clippers just in case!

I clip. It's scary, but filing took too long. I clip at least once a week . . . her nails grow so fast!
@Smurfette: I have cut both LO's thumbs. I cried more than she did both times.

@MsLipGloss: She seemed more annoyed at me trying to stop the bleeding then it hurting her. But I am too chicken to try again.

Dh tried clipping while we were still in the hospital and he totally nipped her and it bled! Poor guy was so embarassed when the pedi came in for her 1 day old check and had to look at her finger We have since only filed.

@Smurfette: Nobody else will even try! So it's all up to me . . . I am actually really good at it now, but I still get nervous because LO moves around constantly!

Oh, annnnd, when I clip, I try to make sure that LO's arm/leg is almost fully extended. That way, if she moves/jerks, she will pull her arm/leg toward her body and away from the clippers. I cut her the first time when she jerked and pushed her hand toward me right as I was pressing down on the clippers (which is how I cut her).

@MsLipGloss: Yeah DH won't clip either, not use the Nose Frida.
GOLD / pineapple / 12662 posts
@Smurfette: I do all of that too. *sigh* I am amazed sometimes that she always wants to be with me because I do all of the terrible things to her (clip her nails, give her meds, put her to sleep in her crib.)!

@MsLipGloss: good point on extending her arm!
I'm so afraid of cutting her- I know I'd cry more than her.
@kjpugs: this contraption sounds sort of awesome! Kind of like the thing they have for dog claws?

@Foodnerd81: here it is! We put it on our registry and my BIL just bought it for us. I've heard great things (both friends and then on a "best items for baby" video someone posted) and from inspecting it I really can't wait to try it! http://www.amazon.com/Zo-li-Buzz-Baby-Nail-Trimmer/dp/B003CN0V7Y/ref=br_it_dp_o?ie=UTF8&colid=1Z0GWYHE4JHC1&coliid=I1IHPDWHMELG48 I didn't realize until I got it that it had 4 little sanding discs- a different color for the different ages, it seems to get a bit grittier as they get older.

We're disgusting and bite her fingernails. I file her toes, cause homie don't play that.

I use Tweezerman baby nail scissors! Love them! I wait until the baby is sleeping and it goes really fast. Cutting my toddler's nails is difficult but I have the most luck before bedtime when she is groggy!

Has nobody used these before?!??! THEY ARE AWESOME. I've never never never cut E's skin. They work SO well! And i can trim them all super fast

@autumnlove: I try to do it now when LO is in her high chair eating puffs!

@blackbird: we have those too! So awesome! Have never cut DS. And I've been using them since he was a newborn. I didn't know I was supposed to file when they are newborns! oops.
We use the scissors blackbird posted and they work great! I used to do it after he passed out after nursing. Now my DH does it while he rocks him to sleep for his nap.

@mrskc, awesome! I find that filing *takes forever* and E pulls her hands away from me. I don't think she likes the feeling of the file.

I cut them, I was better with the scissors than the clippers.
My son now loves getting his nails cut, he sits on his stool in the bathroom and asks to cut them, fingers and toes, lol.

When she was a baby I filed, but eventually it just got easier to clip.
GOLD / watermelon / 14076 posts
@deerylou: I bite M's, too! They're so thin and it's just easier that way.
pomegranate / 3452 posts
I can't file or clip. I bite his nails while he's nursing. Super easy.
pomegranate / 3160 posts
@blackbird: About 2 more months until baby comes, but those are what I bought to do her nails with! I base all of my purchases off of Amazon reviews, so it was a no brainer for me...
pomegranate / 3388 posts
I never managed to get filing to work. Her nails would just bend, so I used clippers. I only nicked her skin once, but I felt horrible!

@Foodnerd81: I have the safety first clipper that has a light. I nthe beginning I was terrified of cutting her nails and her pedi advised me to try filing it but I didnt like filing it, her nails were to soft to be filed down. I would trim atleast once a week because her nails grow fast

@blackbird: I just cut DS's nails for the first time last night and found the scissors were definitely the easiest. I tried clipping, filing, and cutting. Won't be clipping until he's older if at all! Love the scissors!

I cut. I cut the kids' nails 2x a week.
29 months of cutting baby/toddler nails and no accidents so far!
pomegranate / 3768 posts
i file in the beginning because i was too scared to cut her itty bitty nails. now i use the same piyo piyo scissors as @blackbird. love them too! i probably trim or file her nails every other day. i'm kind of obsessive about it because she has really sharp nails!
pomelo / 5820 posts
A few times a week. I do it when he's nursing or asleep. I use an adult nail file and clippers. I clip them down as low as I can without getting nervous, and file the rest.

I've always clipped. Filing was too time consuming. DD is 6 months old and I've just become really good at holding her still.
cherry / 233 posts
@blackbird: Thise are what I have! My first time I did manage to cut too close and make a finger bleed a little though. In the hospital I bit his nails.
