Lo has had 1 diarrhea diaper and I could definitely tell--it was prety much just liquid with a few small clumps (sorry, gross!). I think you will definitely be able to tell--if it's pasty, that doesn't sound like diarrhea to me, especially if he's acting normally. But if you're concerned, I would call the pedi just to be safe!

I think this is one of those things that you're not sure until you see it and then you know without question. Diarrhea is watery and like described by @hilsy85 sort of separated. It may also smell different than usual, more pungent/sour. It never hurts to call and ask the doctor though especially if there is a sudden change.

Agree with what the others have said! Diarrhea is definitely very liquidy (when Xander had it, it almost always leaked out of his diaper - gross!) with maybe some small clumps. You'll know it when you see it!

ETA: Around that age, Xander was only going every 3-4 days and when he went it, it was ALWAYS a mess!! Totally normal!!!

If you open his diaper and most of his poop has adsorbed into the the diaper rather than being on top. I would definitely talk to his ped about it to make sure; but it sounds like he's just having massive diapers from not going every day. And at that age poop is still pretty loose from BM or formula. You will notice his poop becoming more solid once he starts solids. And then you "will" know if he has diarrhea.

@Alivoo01: it is normal that an EBF baby could go up to 10 days (but I have heard of 21 days) without having a BM. The composition of your BM changes with what your baby needs plus it is easily absorbed and contains all the nutrients your baby needs. Being so packed with nutrition leaves little to nothing as "waste" so it may take a few days for some to build up in the intestine. Plus the intestine and gut bacteria are still forming. You are doing great EBF 4.5 months!
