So, I signed the LO and I up for a parent/baby swimming class starting in January and LO will be 5.5 months old.
What kind of diaper do I use in the pool? I've seen something called a "swimming diaper" but it looks just like a cloth diaper cover. There has to be more to it, right?

yup that's what they look like. they don't hold in pee since it would just soak up the pool water. they're just supposed to catch poop!

See, I can't even picture how this thing works. If LO poops, I picture the poo just coming out from the back...
Oh well. Okay, I'll buy it and figure it out.

Yeah, it's only for poop, not pee. A regular diaper would absorb all the pool water and drag the kids down into the water. Not good!

That's all it is! To me it looks like a little speedo with a little extra padding. Our LO is starting swim lessons next month, too.

@Rubies: Her eczema only got bad recently, maybe because of the extreme cold now. During the summer her eczema was still ok. I don't have a pool membership or anything so she has only been in the pool 3 times but she didn't break out after any of the times.

I think huggies sells swim diapers? Saw them on amazon!

Some of them have mesh on the inside, and then a water proof cover, with elastic at the top. It just catches poop. Or tries. lol

I cloth diaper, so I have just used a pocket diaper without an insert. It has a stay dry fabric inside, but doesn't absorb water. I haven't seen a "swim diaper" in person, but I wouldn't use a regular cover because I don't like the waterproof PUL against DS's skin. Also, I use one size diapers, so I like that I can adjust them as DS grows. I know some moms in my moms group were complaining about sizing of swim diapers.

My son has taken 3 sessions of swimming thus far. Each class is only half hour long so the chances of him pooping in the pool is pretty slim. He has, however, peed on me while carrying him to the pool right after changing him into the swim diaper. That was not pleasant. My son never had eczema but still had reactions to the chlorine from time to time. His skin would get blotchy but usually goes away by the next day. Have fun with the class!

@BoogieBea: Yeah, our lessons are only 30 minutes long...I figure the chances of LO pooping in that time frame is quite slim but, you never know. As for LO's eczema, yeah, I'm still trying to figure this one out. Thanks for your insight!
