So I POAS tonight, BFN. Getting a little restless. Think I'm going to wait til AF shows.

@marionberry: I think it might be protocol at some clinics, and not at others. I have taken progesterone with each of my IUI's and neither have included injectibles. I had injectibles to try last cycle, but didn't get to that point because at CD9 I had a follicle that measured at 23.
@bluestriped bee: I saw on another thread that you had to have a little surgery last night. Any chance they did any bloodwork while you were there???
hostess / wonderful apple seed / 16729 posts
@sweetooth: no, they didn't.
Oh, I did sound a little cray cray when I mention that I might be pregnant. I wanted to make sure any antibiotics they gave me was pregnancy safe. I told him I was expecting my period any day now. I think he brushed off my pregnancy statement because I wasn't actually pregnant. He wasn't mean about it. I just picked up on his realization that I wasn't that far along.

@bluestriped bee: FX that you're still not out.
@spaniellove: good luck with your ER today!
Yesterday's appointment left me shocked and wondering if we should quit TTC and look into adopting instead. The good news it we know the reason for my DH's infertility now. He has a balanced translocation. That means his chromosome 14 and 21 are fused. It occurs in 1 in 1000 people but it's rare that it causes infertility. I guess I'm glad it caused IF for him because now we know what it means for our future LOs. The RE told us that we have a 6% chance of having a baby with Down's syndrome. The normal stat for someone my age is 1 in 1300. There is also a chance of having a baby with Trisomy 14. His translocation also causes other chromosome problems in embryos which leads to a higher miscarriage rate (30% over <10%). The RE said we still can get pregnant with IVF and ICSI, but we will have less embryos make it to day 5 for transfer. She said the ones that do make it should carry to term if they implant. She also told us there is a way to have genetic testing done of the embryos before they are implanted so we could find out if one had downs or trisomy 14 before transfer day. The procedure weakens healthy embryos though and it expensive. It's not something we are comfortable with doing.
I was upset at first. I kept thinking how much more can we take? But after letting it sink in and talking to a couple people my DH and I realized that we still have a much greater chance of having a healthy and normal baby than not. And that we will love and be able to take care of our child no matter what. So we will be going forward with IVF.
The RE wants us to see a genetics counsellor before moving forward so we have an appointment for the 4th. I think we'll have a better understanding of the balanced translocation and the possobilities of passing it on after that appointment.

@marionberry: I have a short LP and have been on progesterone for pretty much all of my cycles since we figures this out. I have done oral and injectibles and have taken progesterone even for cycles where I didn't take any meds. As long as I get a positive OPK and we are sure that I have ovulated and either had an IUI or timed intercourse, then I take the progesterone.
@bluestriped bee: I'm sorry that you got a BFN. I was really hoping that one of us would have gotten a BFP this cycle!
@Leialou: It's good that you found out what the problem is, but this must have been hard to hear. Good luck with the IVF.
AFM: I am trying to not focus on the BFN from IUI #3 and enjoy where I am at the moment. I am not pregnant so that means that I can eat a big deli sandwich (which was great!) and have a glass of wine with dinner every night (which is even better!). We are taking this cycle off to figure out what is really going on with DH. He got his referral to the Urologist and is going to call for an appointment.

@Leialou: Wow, what a big piece of information to have to chew. I'm glad that you and and your DH were able to come to a happy conclusion and now know what process you'll need to follow to have a baby. I wish you the best of luck in a happy, healthy baby!

@bluestriped bee: Sorry about the BFN and all that you're going through right now.
@Leialou: That must be so much for you guys to take in. Was the RE recommending PGD? It sounds like you do have a good chance with PGD, and the upside is you can rest assured that you'll have screened for chromosomal abnormalities. Seeing the genetic counselor is a good next step from here. When our genetic testing came back abnormal we were referred to a genetic counselor, although we never went. In our case it was an autosomal recessive condition and it didn't seem likely that PGD could help us.
@justdarling: The big deli sandwich sounds delicious! Hope all goes well with the urologist.

@Leialou: wow, that's a lot of information! I'm so happy that you and your DH have answers and can move on to the next step, and I think you have a wonderful outlook about having better odds for a healthy baby than not (which I agree with!) Good luck and I can't wait to hear the next steps!

I just made an appointment with an RE!!!!! I'm so ridiculously excited, and they got me in way before I thought they'd be able to. I figured I'd have to wait for April (the 1 year mark), but they said diagnostic is covered before that, just treatment isn't. My appointment is for March 13th, so fingers crossed that things will be moving forward!

AFM, I'm back from my egg retrieval and we got 5 eggs. Tomorrow morning they'll call to tell us how many were mature and how many fertilized. (Even if they were ICSI'ed they don't automatically fertilize.) Thanks to the anesthesiologist (and the Zofran!), I'm feeling pretty good and not all nauseated like people often mention. Just some cramping! I was starving from not having anything to eat since last night, so I came home and ate a giant bowl of matzo ball soup

@spaniellove: woohoo five eggs! I hope they all fertilize! And yay for being done with needles
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21628 posts
@spaniellove: Yes, PGD. I couldn't remember what it was called! Thanks. I am concerned about it because the lab is in Michigan and we are in Texas. Congrats on retrieving 5 eggs!! I hope they all fertilize.

@spaniellove: Yea! Very exciting! Congratulations!
@justdarling: MMMM Wine... Sounds great on this cold day. I'd love to be at home on the couch watching a movie and having some wine. Or a delicious adult coffee drink. I've been loving those this winter!
@Shutterbug: So exciting! Hopefully you can get some good info and come up with a plan before you hit the 1 year mark and then you'll be all set to go! YEA!

@spaniellove: Congrats on the 5 egss!!!! I really hope that they all fertilize!
@Mrs.VW: I miss wine during my TWW so I tend to indulge when I get that BFN. DH and I are going wine tasting this weekend! I try to have something fun planned after the TWW just in case I get bad news and need something good to look forward to.

@spaniellove: Whoohoo! That's so exciting. Good luck!
@Shutterbug: Yea! I'm so happy for you. Always annoyed me that they wouldn't see you when there was a tangible problem.
@Leialou: My goodness, that's kind of scary! Awesome that you have some answers and a plan though!
pomelo / 5041 posts
@Shutterbug: Yay yay yay about your RE appointment! I think you're going to be a mama really quick!
@Spaniellove: So happy about your 5 eggs! Fill us in tomorrow on the fertilization report!

@bluestriped bee: I still haven't gotten my period...just in limboland. How about you?
@Leialou: That is a lot of information to take in. It's good that you took some time to let it all sink in before making your decisions for the next step. I wish you the best of luck with IVF.
@justdarling: Taking a cycle off is exactly where I will be if IUI #3 doesn't work for us. I hope you enjoy your wine tasting this weekend. I know I'm enjoying the tastings I've been having every night since my negative results on Monday. Cheers to the positive side of this!
@Shutterbug: YAY! One step closer! March is right around the corner
@spaniellove: So happy for you - I'm thinking good thoughts for those 5 eggs!
honeydew / 7968 posts
@marionberry: sorry to jump in! Congrats! I'm assuming u r pregnant if u need nuchal testing? Did u decide? We decided to do it because it is noninvasive and they can get pretty close to knowing whether there is. We knew we'd love the babies no matter what, but it would be good for us to be prepared. If they did have downs, we'd need doctors to be ready to take care of the kids as soon as they were born... If we did find out there was a good chance they had downs, we wouldn't have gotten the amnio to determine if in fact they did....
@Leialou: good luck w ivf! Glad u were able to figure out what was wrong and now u can try and do something about it.
@spaniellove: woo hoo! Congrats on 5 eggs! Hoping they all fertilize! I guess u find out today!
pomelo / 5041 posts
@tequiero21: thank you for your advice. I'm not sure why this decision has been so hard. I keep going back and forth on it. I almost feel like it will be a spur of the moment decision when our doctor asks.
@shutterbug: does your pharmacist tell you to take your thyroid when you get up and then not eat for an hour? Mine does and I must warn you it's rough when you're pregnant because you wake up starving. I feel bad starving my baby lol.
honeydew / 7968 posts
@marionberry: it's all a matter of whether you want to know, i think. we debated too, but since ALL they do is prick your finger for blood (which is surprisingly a big sting ouch!) and measure the neck to see how thick it is via ultrasound (we had to keep getting ultrasounds anyway cuz we had twins and they wanted to monitor), we decided to just go for it. (i can't remember if it's too thick that means there's a good chance it's downs?).... it's not 100% though and there have been reported false positives, negatives. hopefully, you'll know in your heart what you want to do when the time comes. don't feel pressured to do anything. but i don't think it hurts!
grapefruit / 4703 posts
@marionberry: yes! I set my alarm for like 30 minutes before I have to get up and then take my pill and go back to sleep. Then I get up and shower so that the hour is up by the time I'm making breakfast. I can only imagine how hard that is while pregnant, haha.
honeydew / 7916 posts
OMG why aren't they calling? The embryologist is supposed to call with the fert report by 10...I've seriously been carrying my phone with me everywhere this morning, to the bathroom, everywhere.
apricot / 460 posts
@spaniellove: So excited for you! I'm sure the time is just ticking by - let us know as soon as you hear!
@Shutterbug: @marionberry: Did they test your thyroid when you had your CD 3 BW done? I'm wanting mine tested and I'm hoping they do/will! My CD 3 should be in just a couple days, hopefully!
grapefruit / 4703 posts
@Mrs.VW: Yup! they tested my TSH and it was something like 3.8 so they referred me to an endocrinologist who re-tested my TSH as well as my T3, T4, lots of other stuff (insulin, glucose, etc) and she put me on levothyroxine (thyroid hormone) to get my TSH down between 1 and 2
ETA: TSH is part of the standard CD 3 BW, so they should definitely test it.

@spaniellove; I check in here every now and then and will be checking more today for your update. I'm sure every minute passing is torture right now!

Out of the 5 retrieved...4 fertilized!!!!!! The ICSI was worth it! Now we just need them all to KEEP GROWING!
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21628 posts
@spaniellove: that's wonderful news!! Are you doing day 3 or day 5 transfer?
apricot / 460 posts
@spaniellove: WOO HOO! That's great!! I bet you are thrilled! When will they update you again?
@Shutterbug: Good to know - thanks! I had called just to double check before you posted and they do!
And - about 20 minutes later I could call back bc it is CD 1! YEA!! Now I'm (impatiently) waiting on a call back from the nurse. I hope she calls soon and it's a go for Saturday! I'd love for DH to be able to come with me. If nothing else just to sit in the waiting room and keep my mind off of my nerves before Luckily I should have the results back quickly - maybe not as quick since it's the weekend, but I'll wait til Monday if I HAVE to
honeydew / 7916 posts
@Leialou: @Mrs.VW: They'll call again tomorrow, and might tell me then if it's a 3 or 5 day transfer.
nectarine / 2705 posts
@spaniellove: yay! congrats! now I will think positive AND growing thoughts for you
pomelo / 5228 posts
@spaniellove: Yay, thats fantastic! Hoping they keep growing!
I went to a ceremony for a close friend's baby this morning... I'm mostly fine, but its always tough going to baby things. I was a bit sad in general yesterday, but feeling better today at least. Hopefully I'll be Oing today and be happily in the TWW tomorrow
pomelo / 5041 posts
@spaniellove: OMG when I read about your 4 eggs I started tearing up on the way in to work. I am SOOO happy for you! I'm sure they'll all do well so a 5 day transfer and then on to mommyhood. AH I'm so excited for you!
@mrs.vw: I'm pretty sure you can draw TSH at any time, although they usually do it at cd3 to start with. I'd check with your doctors to make sure they plan to test for it. Yay for starting your cycle.
@shutterbug: I figured it was a typical guideline. The alarm thing is smart, I kind of do that too (since I snooze so long) but I don't eat breakfast usually until I get to work, so it means waiting a long time. Prior to thyroid I could grab something to eat (say an apple) and then hop in the shower. It's hard when your belly wakes up needing food, lol.
honeydew / 7968 posts
@spaniellove: yayayayaya!! So exciting! What's some great percentage! But ugh to another wait! Definitely didn't miss those! I forget the difference between 3 and 5 days, but I did 3 days and all went well, so hope for sooner than later!

Is it crazy that I'm sort of bummed for this cycle? I just feel like our chances without injections/IUI are SO LOW that I just wish it was already next cycle and we could get started! I don't even want to try this month
nectarine / 2705 posts
@Mrs.VW: It's not crazy at all. I'm going to be starting my 3rd IUI cycle and I feel like it's not going to work so I just want to take a break, and prepare for IVF. So if you think you feel crazy now - just wait. I hope you never get to this point though, and you get a BFP super fast
