@alie: hi! good to hear from you. I don't think IUI is too expensive if it's just Clomid + IUI. Maybe another $300-$400? I'm certainly no expert though!

@Shutterbug: That's what I'm hoping! I think I'm mostly not sure what to expect for the costs of monitoring ultrasounds and whatnot.

@Mrs.VW: I don't know all of my exact numbers, I'd have to go back and look them up. But I'm doing Bravelle right now. And my husband's numbers are good, there's nothing that has been pinpointed with me, and I, too, wonder why it's taking SO long. This is month 20 for me. // I use Freedom Fertility Pharmacy. They have been great to deal with, and super speedy. But now that @justdarling mentions it, I think it would be helpful to have a local pharmacy that could show me how to do this.
@spaniellove: You're the best I think I need to create a little step by step list so I can do this right. Thanks for the "rule of thumb".

@alie: Hey there On to number 3, eh? I know that the cost out of pocket is hard to deal with. But I hope you can get some monitoring soon so you know how things are going on the inside.
@justdarling: Yeah - I hope to improve with each injection. Last night wasn't so good. I was probably a little nervous too, which didn't help. I'm going to watch the online videos a few more times.

@sweetooth: Good to know - thanks!! When you order your vials do you get the syringes and sharps box and everything or do you have to order that too? About how long does it take to get them? I think we might do that and then just get any extras we may need from the pharmacy in town. I watched the videos on the freedom site and I thought they were pretty helpful! Did you try that? Luckily we have a 'shots class' at our RE next Tuesday. They have one every week so I think that will help a lot! How many IUI w/ injectables cycles have you done?

@sweetooth: @Mrs.VW: TBH, despite the DOR no one actually has an explanation for why I'm not getting pregnant. The last several SAs have been normal and I'm ovulating and other than having low ovarian reserves my numbers are fine. DH and I keep wondering if my bizarre cervix has been keeping sperm from getting where it needs to go and after realizing how much it took for them to properly get a catheter in we don't think the IUI was done right either - it seems like they need an abdominal ultrasound and different catheter to get all the way in, otherwise they don't get past the cervix.
nectarine / 2705 posts
@Mrs.VW: Yep, the order comes with all of the syringes, needles, alcohol swabs, gauze pads, and sharps container. I've learned that I can get an order overnight, but I usually order a few days in advance. I was happy to learn I could get it overnight if needed. I have watched the videos on their site, I think I just need to study it some more. I asked about a class at my RE office and they said it's more geared towards IVF. Maybe I still need to go. This is my very first IUI with injectables cycle.

@spaniellove: I thought that the fibroid they removed from my uterus back in the fall was my "diagnosis" - the reason why I wasn't getting pregnant. But now that 3 more cycles have passed since then and I'm still not pregnant, I think I might just have the dreaded "unexplained" diagnosis.
It sounds like you've definitely learned a lot about the inside of your body through all of this It also sounds like IVF was the right move for you guys. I wonder if you should tell doctors that they can write "bizarre cervix" on your chart
apricot / 460 posts
@sweetooth: Thanks! It's nice to have someone that has ordered from them before! If there is no cost for the class then I say go for it! It can't hurt if it's just showing you how to do injections!
@spaniellove: Bizarre! And frustrating for sure! Did they do the U/S while doing your IUI?
honeydew / 7916 posts
@Mrs.VW: I think they just inserted a thin catheter and said "okay we're done now, wasn't that easy". It wasn't until they did my trial transfers for IVF that they saw on the ultrasound that nothing but a heavy duty catheter would make it past my cervix, aka the turkey neck.

@spaniellove: It's funny that you blame your cervix, because we think that was our issue too. I'd had a LEEP years ago and while it's not supposed to affect getting pregnant, our RE and OB did say that it could affect the way the sperm swim through the cervix. Given no real issue with DH's SAs I think it was a big part of the problem, if not all of it...especially since the first IUI worked by bypassing it.

@marionberry: @spaniellove: Did you experience any pain with your IUI? I'm just curious since it goes past your cervix. I had quite a bit of pain with my HSG. That could also be bc they had me move from side to side but it was really painful during the procedure. Just curious as to what to be prepared for.
pomelo / 5041 posts
@Mrs.VW: No, my IUI was pretty much painless, just a tiny bit of cramping or uncomfortableness. It was definitely less than my HSG, although that didn't hurt me as bad as some people say it did.
honeydew / 7916 posts
@Mrs.VW: No, I didn't really feel anything with the IUI - it was the least painful of all the procedures.
nectarine / 2705 posts
@Mrs.VW: The only thing I ever feel with the IUI procedure is the speculum.
coconut / 8472 posts
@sweetooth: Oh yeah, the worst part of my HSG was the massive speculum.
apricot / 460 posts
@marionberry: @spaniellove: @sweetooth: Ok thanks! That makes me feel a little more at ease about it. After and HSG and a lap, a speculum seems easy to block out. Ugh. TTC - you are not fun!!!!
@Shutterbug: Don't worry! Lots of people have no problems at all with them! I would say more often than not they aren't bad. Don't worry
apricot / 452 posts
@Shutterbug: Don't worry about the HSG. Every woman is different. Mine did not hurt at all. All I felt was the speculum and very mild cramping - cramps for my period are worse.
@Mrs.VW: The IUI didn't hurt at all either. I've had 3 of them now and really haven't felt anything besides the speculum. I also think, the more you get into this infertility journey, the more you become used to things being put in there! I used to dread the speculum and now, that's nothing!
pomelo / 5041 posts
@Shutterbug: I second @justdarling's comment. It really was nothing to me...although kind of gross as that dye drips out. I've heard they're only bad if you have blockages or if you have a radiologist who doesn't specialize in doing them.

@justdarling: Ha - that's so true! I hear women complain about a yearly pap and I think, 'Girl. You have NO idea what it means to be poked and prodded'

@Mrs.VW: @justdarling: @marionberry: thanks ladies! I'm hopeful that since I have such an obvious LPD that (fingers crossed) I don't also have a tube issue, and it won't hurt. I'm such a wimp when it comes to medical procedures - I nearly faint at blood draws!

OMG guys I am so excited, it's CD11 and I have 3 follicles over 10mm!! This NEVER happens for me. Normally I have like a million tiny ones and if I'm lucky, I get one lead follicle after 20-25 days. Having 3 and having them on day 11 is just unbelievable.
(Btw I'm did a combo this cycle of 7.5 mg femara for 5 days then 2 days of 75iu gonal-f.)

@MrsCB: yeah!! Looks like adding the injectibles is working! That's awesome!

@marionberry: o great. mine was SO. PAINFUL! i felt like someone was sticking a knife in and then twisting it. afterwards, i think i threw up, can't remember. but i was fine after all that. it was the actual procedure that was painful. they said i was all clear, but i did get pregnant after the hsg. hmmmm. we lost the baby after and my husband was joking for awhile that we should get another hsg to get pregnant again.

@Shutterbug: @kentuckygirl: @bluestriped bee: @Leialou: @spaniellove: @tequiero21: Thanks everyone! :D. I texted DH and he was excited too. I'm so happy we finally found something that seems to work, and that I may actually O on a normal day like CD15, instead of CD28 like last month.
pomelo / 5041 posts
@MrsCB: So very happy for you! That's a fabulous sign.
@Tequiero21: I'm so sorry yours was so rough. Obviously that person did not know what they're doing. DH works in radiology and he said he'd watched a ton of women have it done in sever pain, so that had me pretty scared. Thank God our RE sends every patient to only one radiologist because she's so good. They do say that it's as much therapeutic as it is diagnostic. We got pregnant the cycle we had it too. I'm sorry about the loss you had though. That had to be so hard.

@Shutterbug: Everyone is so different, so don't get too many ideas in your head about the HSG that make it worse than it needs to be. I think if you go in knowing it may be uncomfortable, but you have ways that you cope with some minor pain, you'll be ok. I had to breathe some deep breaths to get through parts of mine. It definitely wasn't my favorite thing, but I'm glad we had the test done.

@Shutterbug: My HSG was kinda painful but for only 10 seconds. I did have post-op pain which is rare. I was pretty much in bed all weekend to recover. My procedure was on a Thursday and I was in pain by the afternoon. I got blood tests done on Friday by my office and they saw no signs of infection. I have no idea what happened. BTW, my tubes were clear. I'm not looking forward to doing another HSG. If I do, I'll ask for antibiotics before the procedure. I'll also make sure I have it done on a Friday, so I don't have to go to work that day or a few days after.

PSA to anyone having an HSG. They'll likely prescribe you doxycycline to take before and after the procedure. If you take it, take it with food, and do not lie down for 30 mins afterward. Of course the pharmacist told me that I could take it without food so I took it when my first alarm went off (along with my last Clomid dose) and laid in bed for about 30 mins until it was time to get up (which I read later you're not supposed to do). I can't tell you how much I vomited in the shower...so horrible. We asked both the RE and the radiologist if this was an issue and she said since my tubes were clear, no need to worry that I'd vomited it back up and they didn't make me take it after the procedure either. I'd avoid taking it if you can or at least take it with food. You do not want to go through that. Plus it really made me mad that I didn't end up getting my last Clomid dose.

@marionberry: oof! Well good thing you got KU without that last dose of Clomid!
