Does anyone ever get offended by insensitive jokes? My dad has Parkinson's (grandpa did too) and I get really annoyed when people joke about someone shaking or something like they have Parkinson's. To me, it's just called calling something retarded. Likewise, a good friend of mine has herpes - another thing constantly "joked" about. And you would never in a million years guess she does!
Is it just me being sensitive??

@Mrs. High Heels: My freshman year RA taught us not to use that word. But once my Dad was diagnosed with Parkinson's, I became a lot more aware of similar things...

I'm kinda sensitive to jokes about ANY kind of condition or people in general. I think it's just tacky & ugly.

Nope my husbands grandmother had Parkinson's so I completely understand where you are coming from on that.
.@TurtleDoves: yes, they do. When I had my m/c last year, someone told me that maybe it was a good thing because perhaps my baby would have been retarded. Ouch.

@LindsayInNYC: my best family-friend got herpes because her fiance cheated on her. She hadn't ever been with any other guy. They worked it out and ended up getting married this January. They both have genital herpes. You would never guess.

@runsyellowlites: I've been through it all with my friend so I know WAY more than most when it comes to the topic! Thing is, some people can have many sex partners and be fine while others can have very few and contract something. She was in a serious, committed relationship when she was first diagnosed. Apparently it can remain dormant for quite some time so she doesn't know exactly how or where she got it. (So, like the girl you know, its possible her bf didn't even know he had it!) Ironically, she had a bikini wax not long before and it was suspected that that was how she got it. Not even from sex! She's accepted everything with time but I feel for her (and others in her position!) whenever I hear people "joke" about it.

I hate when people say "that's retarded" or "that's gay." Both bother me. My students use both constantly and I always discipline them for it. So frustrating.

Gay and retarded both REALLY bother me. I've never given the rest too much thought, but I guess you are right. It's pretty tasteless and insensitive.

I hate the word "retarded"...I cringe when I hear it...I never used to be sensitive towards people making herpes jokes, but after reading some of the stories the pp's wrote about, it makes me think of it in a different way, and I do feel bad for people who got it by not even being promiscuous.
