That article is interesting...and makes good points. My first pedi told me to do a lot of things that in my gut didnt feel right (set a feeding schedule being one of them, start purees at 4 months.) I finally decided I was going to go off of instinct and ended up BFing on demand until, well now (shes a year old). I did baby-led weaning at 6.5 months and never did purees. I think at some point, we all need to trust that we know what is best for our babies and listen to the major medical advancements that are a priority to life

I agree that parents should be confident! But at the same time, sometimes parents can make mistakes too? I dunno, I feel like it's a tricky thing to balance but that it's worth keeping an open mind to outside ideas too.
At the same time, I've listened to other people before and not trusted my instinct and that was a mistake. So just ignore me! I have no idea how to balance all this stuff!!

DH and I have totally opposite opinions on this. I"m all about reading and preparing, and he said he just is really looking forward to figuring these things out for ourselves, and making mistakes, and figuring out the right way. I have the opinion that I'd rather at least know what to TRY when, for instance, baby will. not. sleep. But I agree with her that there can be an overreliance on others! Then again, I'm not a parent yet, so what do I know?

@ladyfingers: my husband and I are the same way. I like to research and read and find the "best" ways to do something, and he is much more "learn-as-we-go". We have had many disagreements on the merit of what MOST people deem professional advice. Much like the article outlined, he feels that what works for one family might not for another.
I think that our goal will be to find a healthy balance and medium. There are millions and millions of parents in the world that have done this more than we have, so why not use some of their advice? But, the ultimate decisions/paths will be made by what WE feel is best for our kids.

I think sometimes our communities are less strong than they were in years before, parents and aunts and close friends are often spread out by hundreds of miles. I think that makes people more likely to rely on experts than they did on community, like in the past. That's why I like communities like hellobee! You get the expertise of many people actively going through parenthood instead of an expert who may just have read about parenthood (I'm all for experts too but both have their strengths and weaknesses)

@ladyfingers: My husband is the same too. He doesn't like to read into expert advice or research cause he thinks everything is super biased anyway. The only thing he will consider if it's health-related research. Like the latest in vaccines or medicine, etc. I like to hear different opinions and then form my own. But I usually just end up going with my gut at the end. I figure I can't blame myself if I go with my gut instinct but I WILL blame myself if I went against it. I don't know...parenting is hard and confusing!!
