@lawbee11: @highwire: @Running Elley: @oliviaoblivia: @April_Showers: if I wear the skirt and shirt combo, should I be barelegged? should I wear black tights, or pantyhose??
GOLD / watermelon / 14076 posts
@Coco Bee: I would only wear tights if it is cold where you are (I assume it's not?). I think the whole pantyhose thing is kinda outdated. I interned for a judge in law school and never wore tights or pantyhose (neither did any of the other interns).

@Coco Bee: I think bare legged is fine, considering they did specify business causal. Plus you have nice legs!

@Coco Bee: Ditto to what @highwire said. I'd wear sheer pantyhose. I definitely wouldn't do black with the shoes.

I think the skirt is too casual for a management position at a financial assets company, as is the blazer. It's also a little trendy, which tends to be looked down upon for traditional careers. Finance is usually a stuffy type of place. Just my personal experience with hiring people, though. I still wouldn't consider anything but black dress pants, a dress shirt, and a suit jacket to be appropriate. It just...doesn't look like you know what you're doing and/or don't belong if you show up to an interview dressed otherwise. Sorry. Hopefully you don't have that issue.

i've only had a few jobs (all office/professional or teaching), but i've never worn a suit to the interviews and i always did just fine (got the job). i think it's more about you and your personality/ability to do the job than if you own a suit. i think the pencil skirt/shirt combo is just fine, but i would probably wear the red cardigan (opened) with it.
ps: i just read an HR article that said not to wear pantyhose. pantyhose haven't been "mandatory" or even helpful to an interview since the 1990's.

Here's the thing. There is a huge range of okay items to wear to an interview, depending on who you ask (just look at all of the opinions on this thread!). But I feel like as a bottom line, no interviewer is ever going to hold it against you if you dress too conservatively. The same cannot be said for the other way around. So, I'd always air on dressing as conservative and professional as you can with what you have in your closet. You want only your best assets to shine, and it is silly for something like your outfit to possibly deter you from getting a position you want, if you are totally qualified in every other area.

@photojane: heh good to know!!
@blackbird: I really, really appreciate your feedback. I guess if I had a suit, that would be my go-to. Unfortunately, I just don't have the time to go get one, the interview is in 4 hours (and an hour away) and I have a 6 month old. Thanks I guess I'll have to make up for my attire with my personality and resume lol!!

@highwire: true true
thanks ladies!!!
I'm still debating between the two outfits - I like them both!!

Sorry i totally feel like a debbie downer in this thread! And realistically, it shouldn't look bad if someone came to me dressed more casually, but it usually reflects poorly in their answers! That's just the business world, I guess. It usually indicates they haven't had a real job before....I often find this is the case with students, though. You have a resume, so this obv isn't the case!
But since you have an "in" with your friend and the lady specifically said it was business casual, I'm sure it will be fine Next time you stumble across a suit on sale or a blazer at a thrift store, it doesn't hurt to have it on hand
Go knock their socks off!

@Coco Bee: I vote for the skirt. What if you did the skirt with the white ruffle with the gray cardigan?
I am a very conservative interview dresser too. I know nude stockings are outdated some, but it might help dress up the skirt. I don't think you need a suit for an interview but some nice quality pieces can go a long way. If you are doing serious interviewing I would invest in either a suit or a nice basic jacket/pant combo.

100% wear the blazer. If you have heels, where the blazer, with the pants and the white shirt or another plain button down if you have it. OR wear the blazer with the skirt, and the white blouse tucked into your skirt. The black blazer elevates your look into more interview appropriate imo. Good luck! You'll do great!

@Thehistoryofus: well this was totally out of the blue! and definitely a step up from the types of jobs I apply for, simply because I don't know if I'm qualified for higher end jobs. I don't have much experience. So I'm hoping that my "in" with my friend gets my foot in the door I guess!
I did try the cardigain over the ruffle top and it doesn't quite work... It's a looser fitting top, so you can see bunches and creases. Didn't look professional
@blackbird: no you're not!! And I know you weren't being mean or harsh, you obviously know the business world a little more than I. And I appreciate your feedback! Next time I see a suit on sale, I'll have to pick it up for a rainy day I appreciate your feedback, for real

@Mr. Coco Bee: you can't say "also"! you have to pick ONE!

i voted 1 but the pics you posted after were nice too! 4 is nice but the shirt looks wrinkled and that looks unprofessional. good luck on the interview!
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21616 posts
@tequiero21: haha I know, I would iron it of course
eggplant / 11287 posts
II know I am late to the party but I really like the idea of the gray cardigan over the white ruffle shirt (belted) with black pants and black heels. Totally screams business casual to me.

@Coco Bee: u never know! my husband doesn't care if things aren't ironed! lol. who wants to see a doctor is wrinkled scrubs?

@blackbird: @Mrs. Sunglasses: @highwire: @HeatherlovesKenny: I actually just got back!! It was a two step process that involved a personal interview and then a business seminar. It took forever! the guy giving the seminar included his life story lol
I "passed" the initial interview, she really liked me and said I had the qualities they were looking for. The seminar was about the company and position.
It's an interesting setup... It's for a major financial company that is looking to plant new offices in our area and they need assistant and branch managers.. but I would need to complete what they said is an intensive 6-12 month training program.
I have my final follow up interview on Friday but it will be more of a Q&A for me to learn more about what exactly it all entails.
At this point I'm totally unsure of whether this is the thing for me.
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21616 posts
@highwire: oh, and I wore the skirt with the button up shirt and wide belt

@Coco Bee: yay! Glad the interview went well:) the skirt combo was my favourite of the ones you posted! nice!

Glad it went well!
I really think a dark suit is a must in a woman's wardrobe. I hate to say it, but it's one less thing to worry about when you have to go to a funeral or a job interview. There are so many other things to be thinking about at those times, your clothes shouldn't need to be one of them. Go to a good department store and buy a basic black suit at the end of season sale. Get the jacket, pants and skirt. You'll be wearing them for years!!! I actually need to update mine after this winter.
