My brother is buying a home in Iowa and was advised by his realtor that only sellers hire a lawyer....true? Where I live both parties hire lawyers.

Our situation was different in that we bought from my FIL, and just had one lawyer for both of us.
I'm not sure what the 'norm' is though. -
We're in Georgia but have bought/sold several times. Here there is only 1 lawyer to close the sale and it is paid by whoever pays closing costs (negotiated during sale). We've done it both ways different times, where either buyer or seller technically pays..

I'm not sure if it varies by state, but I'd want to get my own lawyer to look out for my own good.
My brother is an estate lawyer and has handled my closings. When I bought my first house, he said he nearly got the seller's lawyer disbarred because they made so many mistakes in the paperwork. I'm not sure exactly what they were, but I'd hate to be taken advantage of because I didn't have someone reading the fine print for me.

I think this really varies by state. My bro is in NJ and both sides hire an attorney. We're in TN and all the paperwork is handled by the title company.

This is interesting, we sold in TX and bought in WI and all the paperwork was handled by the title company in both states.

Wa state - neither party hires an attorney here. Title co handles everything.

We just purchased a house in Virginia a couple of months ago. Our title company handled all of the paperwork.
