Last ipad question, I promise.
I'm sorry, I'm holding out for any apple announcements (Sept 10th) before buying an ipad so I'm getting antsy. I want one now!

Wifi only. I pay for data on my iPhone so it seemed like overkill to have it on both. Plus I really only use my iPad at home (where we have wifi).

@lawbee11: That's true. I do have my iphone with unlimited data.

Wifi only.eta: I use it for my dissertation research though and sometimes don't have wifi access and in those cases it's really annoying not to have other ways to access Internet. But, I also am in different countries w it so in that case would need multiple SIM cards to make it work and that would be more annoying! And expensive.

@bluestriped bee: Probably an iPad? I feel like the mini is too much like my iPhone in size (I know not really but still). I busted my butt at work for a bonus and told myself I'd buy myself one as a reward
As for WiFi vs. 3G, I'm wondering if I can buy WiFi and only "upgrade"/pay for 3G when needed (i.e. travelling or something?).

WiFi only. I rarely use my Ipad away from home so it wasn't worth the cost.

@LindsayInNY: I'm leaning toward the ipad mini. I'm thinking that whenever I get pregnant, I'll want something I can hold with one hand while the baby nurses. The regular ipad seems a bit too large for me.
I also created this thread. http://boards.hellobee.com/topic/if-you-have-an-older-ipad-would-you-trade-it-in-for-free-for-an-ipad-mini
Oh, I found a great site that explains when to get the wifi only versus cell service one. https://www.amherst.edu/offices/it/services/computers/college-owned/ipadmodels
Also, I don't think you can add the cell service part at a later date. You could get a hotspot from your cell or internet provider so you can get instant wifi.
ETA: Buying a hotspot from my internet provider sounds like a better deal, now that I think of it.
Found a link to portable hotspot equipment. http://lifehacker.com/5974761/how-to-choose-the-fastest-cheapest-and-most-reliable-mobile-hotspot-to-stay-connected-everywhere-you-go

@bluestriped bee: Hmm, that's a good point. Didn't think of that... I figured adding 3G would be the same as adding international service on your phone when traveling? That it would be a month-to-month thing? Maybe it depends on provider?
hostess / wonderful apple seed / 16729 posts
@LindsayInNY: Yup, month-to-month. They say with no contract. Oh, it's $15 for the lowest plan, I think 512 mb. $30 for 2gb of data.
bananas / 9229 posts
@bluestriped bee: I'd be fine with that option. Mostly if we're traveling or something where they wouldn't be consistent WiFi.
hostess / wonderful apple seed / 16729 posts
@LindsayInNY: I think I've decided against the wifi+cell service. I'm just going to invest in a portable hotspot. That way if I need wifi, both my DH's macbook and my ipad can use internet.
This link has me sold. http://lifehacker.com/5974761/how-to-choose-the-fastest-cheapest-and-most-reliable-mobile-hotspot-to-stay-connected-everywhere-you-go
Specifically Karma hotspot allows you to buy data as needed. Like you can by 1GB at a time for $14 a month and data doesn't expire. I like that instead of monthly plans.
bananas / 9229 posts
@bluestriped bee: That's an option. I'm not totally tech savvy to know much about hotspots though. But might be something worth learning!
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
I wanted to use my phone as a hotspot, but apparently, apple doesn't allow that on their phones (android does), so I am currently not using my ipad as planned!
hostess / wonderful apple seed / 16729 posts
@looch: Yeah, the only way to use your iPhone as a hotspot is if it is jailbroken. I don't want to lose my warranty so I won't jailbreak my phone. The portable hotspot through 3rd party vendor is a really good and affordable idea.
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
@bluestriped bee: You know, that's a good point...my phone is the older 4G and it was a refurb that cost me $50 so I might jailbreak it..I've had 4 iphones and this is the first one that's not hacked!

wifi only, there are very few instances that I wish I had it (road trips) but my phone works just fine!

@bluestriped bee: I use wifi only, I didnt want to pay extra since I already have a data plan on my phone
watermelon / 14467 posts
I have wifi only, but my iPhone has an option where I can set it up as a wifi hotspot as long as I have cell service. So, if I HAD to use my iPad while traveling and there was no wifi but I did have cell service, I could set it up as a hot spot and surf the internet that way.

@LindsayInNY: Ahh, so right now for students (grad student), Apple is offering a free $50 itunes gift card with the purchase of an iPad. But I just found out this gift card deal expires on Sept 6th. I wanted to see if a new ipad mini with retina comes out on Sept 10th or rumors said it might be pushed back to October. Should I get an iPad mini now or wait? Ugh, stupid Apple and stupid me for not having enough patience to wait
bananas / 9229 posts
@bluestriped bee: Boo, not a grad student! I want to wait until I receive my bonus first but who knows when that will be =/

Wifi only. I also have data on my iPhone and mainly just use my iPad at home where we have wifi.

We used to get cellular but we both have smartphones so we didn't need it. Now we're wifi only.

@bluestriped bee: I love my mini. I've used my dads regular size iPad and much prefer the mini. It fits so nice in my hands. That said, the retina display is nice, but I don't really miss it.
hostess / wonderful apple seed / 16729 posts
@JamieLee: Do you have an iPhone 5? I have one and I heard that you'll notice the blurryness (sp?) going from an iPhone 5 to the mini without retina.
Although, if its costs more than $100 to get retina, I'll be cheap and get the one without.

Wifi only. I don't connect mine to my gmail account thanks to the cloud thing and finding iPads/Apple devices in the area. Nothing like having your MIL read your personal text messages on "her iPad" while you're enduring her hell.

@LindsayInNY: i bought the full size ipad before my LO was born and used it non stop to track his feeding, pooping, sleeping (Total Baby App rocks). I got a full protective case (third party.....I thought the Apple cases didnt provide enough coverage). I would nurse him, and surf online or read on Kindle, but holding the heavy ipad with one hand got really hard on my wrists. Anyway, after carrying the ipad to the nursery for every middle of the night feeding, one sleep deprived night I dropped it on my tile floor and it cracked.
Now I have the mini and it is the PERFECT size and weight. I am nursing my LO and typing out this post on the mini with one hand.

@bluestriped bee: I don't notice a difference going between the mini and the iPhone 5.

@bluestriped bee: meant to include you in my earlier post. I recommend the mini for the reason you suggest.
bananas / 9229 posts
@Myicitygirl: How would you describe the size difference between the two? I have an original Kindle. Is the iPad mini bigger than that?
