@bluestriped bee: I have an iphone 5 and I've used it as a hotspot before. I'm on a Verizon plan, I added it to my services when I was traveling a lot for work.

I've never had the mini so I can't compare. I have the regular iPad with wifi only. It has been fine since I really only use it at home or when I am traveling. There are a lot of places that have wifi access now.

@Sophia: oh, cool. How much does it cost you to get a hotspot? Or do you have one of those new shared data plans.

@Myicitygirl: Oh, cool. That's what I was thinking a mini would be good for. I don't need an ipad right now since I'm not pregnant yet, but I got an apple gift card as a gift. I'm thinking I can buy myself a pre pregnancy and baby gift.

@bluestriped bee: I want to say it was around $20 a month. I normally have a 2gb plan, and to have a hotspot, I had to bump it up to 4gb. I kept it for a few months and then cancelled it, but it worked well for me when I was traveling a lot.

Wifi only. I've travelled both domestically and internationally with it and have had no problems with finding wifi spots when necessary - even on the south coast of Samoa a month after a cyclone!

@LindsayInNY: I am not familiar with the Kindle (only the app for the ipad). The mini is a little smaller than an 8.5"x11" piece of paper folded in half. But it has all the functionality of the full size.

@bluestriped bee: I have an iPhone 4S...I plan to get the 5s when they release it, so I might wish for the retina once the time comes, but probably not enough to spend an extra 100 bucks.

@LindsayInNY, @bluestriped bee: oh, and the mini is so much easier than thrto carry when you are FaceTiming with relatives who want to see the LO, especially when LO is mobile and you are following him or her around with the ipad.
