Set me straight- It looks like most of the chambray outfits I see are really denim or denim-ish.

I think chambray was pretty popular in the early nineties and it was really light colour and weight denim?

yep, lightweight denim. the fibers are different than denim-jeans.

It is light weight and usually softer
So for example most shirts are chambray while jackets are still denim.
