A necessity for you? Deal breaker?
Here in good old Canada we only get maybe 2.5 months of pool-worthy weather each year so I'd prefer not to have the maintenance and upkeep. But it's sooooo nice going for a dip at my BFFs on a hot day

I really want a pool at our forever house. I know they are a PITA, but we have a looonnnng pool season and will likely be pretty far out in the suburbs, so I really want one.

If we ever buy another house it will be a must have!

Like to have. I'd say pool season here is ~ Memorial Day - Labor Day, give or take a couple weeks each way.
I grew up with a pool (open all year!) and while it is a lot of maintenance, it is FUN to have one! Everyone always wants to come over to your house
But, since we'd have to open and close it every year, and adjust the chemicals constantly, and have nice pool covers to keep the leaves out, it'd be $$$$. Soooo, if a perfect house came with one, bonus for me! Otherwise DH would never see the point in going out of our way to get one
Best option would be to live in a small community with a nice pool that no one else used and it could just be all mine but I didn't have to do the maintenance

@swurlygurl: could you get a pool and J and I will pay an entrance fee?

We have Memorial Day - Labor Day. It would be nice, but very few people have them. I would love one, but not sure its worth the money for an underground...but if I ever came into a lot of money I would love to do it!

We have a pool, I didn't want it at all, but now that we have it, I can't imagine not having it. We use a gas heater to extend the season, our pool is already open.
We've only been in the house one year and my husband can easily manage all of the chemicals, opening, closing, etc. We have a robot vacuum cleaner, so there's not really much to do.

I wouldn't want one. I heard maintaining a pool is a PITA.
Plus, the increased insurance liability.
I would prefer to have a friend or a neighbor with one.
I did like living in an apartment complex with one. Now that I live in a house with a yard, I just need a place to keep me cool when I lay out. I don't need to swim. I need to get one of these sun tan pools. http://www.amazon.com/Swimline-9052-71-Suntan-Tub/dp/B000MOL2GU/ref=pd_sim_sbs_lg_2?ie=UTF8&refRID=0YTXEPQHV2C1MV48K86F
ETA: We live in an area where it is warm enough for pool weather about 2 months a year, if that.
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21616 posts
I have the same thought process as you. We only get about 2 months of swimming weather so it's not worth it unless it's indoor
If I lived somewhere like TX I might think differently.
GOLD / pomegranate / 3688 posts
@swurlygurl: That would be ideal.
With heat, we would be able to use a pool late March through early November here, so I think it would be completely worth it.

We have one and we love it but there is a lot of year round care required. Pools are vey common in our neighborhood.
nectarine / 2932 posts
I would love a pool! I talk about having one at our next house all the time. They aren't very common in my area though, so I doubt my husband would be into it.

It's a deal breaker for us; if we bought a house with a pool we would fill it in!

I would LOVE to have a pool, but nobody has one around here because it doesn't make sense.
wonderful olive / 19353 posts
It was a deal breaker for us when we bought our first house, but surprise! we bought a house with a pool. D'oh! It was a pain in the butt to get it running and cleaned out, but once it was, maintenance wasn't bad at all! While I maintained it, we hardly ever used it!
Now that we have DS and have moved to a house without a pool, I kind of wish we did have a pool now. haha. Go figure right! Our community doesn't have a community pool either so that sucks.
nectarine / 2262 posts
Well, we live in year round pool weather, but the house we just bought does NOT have one. It is expensive and a hassle, but I am more worried about safety/liability. We live about 1 mile from a beautiful city pool and about 2.5 from the beach, so we will do that for now. We do have room in our backyard to build one if we ever decide we want to go that route.
If we ever have kids though (which hopefully will be soon), it makes me sooo nervous to have a pool with young kids around. In this part of the country there are several cases every year of toddlers and young kids drowning when they wander into a pool.

It'd be nice to have and our second choice house actually had one. But ultimately, this house won us over so it's just nice to have for us but not the deciding factor!

I'm not concerned about maintaining a pool, hubs grew up with one and knows the drill. But the safety would be an issue for me. The pool would HAVE to be completely enclosed by its OWN fence. It's hot here so it would definitely be nice to have as long as I felt comfortable with safety set up. But my perfect set up is to live in a neighborhood with a clubhouse/pool.

We purposefully bought a house without a pool. We live in a climate where a pool would be great, but we planned to TTC soon after buying and pools worry me from a safety perspective. If we ever move again our LO will be much older so I wouldn't worry and then it might be worth it.

@MamaMoose: Great minds We have a community pool less than a mile from us (we can drive or take the greenbelt trails to get there), so it's kinda the best of both worlds.

I don't really want one. They are extra upkeep and money and DH and I aren't that in to pools. Like you said, in Canada you don't get to use an outdoor pool for much of the year. Now, we wouldn't turn down a house because it had a pool if it was otherwise great for us (right price, big enough, ect), but we're not looking for a house with a pool.

Honestly it's almost a must-have here in swampy central FL, BUT- I don't want the upkeep. Having a neighborhood with a communal pool is 100% worth it. No maintenance, pool access within walking distance!

For me, pools are like boats, it's better to know someone that has one than to have one yourself
Too much maintenance/work for something we could only use maybe 3 months out of the year. But

I would love to have one but is is deal breaker for DH.

I want a pool but it too much $$ for how little we would use it- June thru August
blogger / honeydew / 7081 posts
Our house came with an above ground pool. It's nice to have, but it's a lot of work, and I wouldn't have put one in if it weren't already here.

I LOVE pools, but i'm not confident i can take care of it to the best of my ability. Which is why I am so grateful to have in-laws with an amazing pool in my town that i use whenever i want! No responsibilities!!! It seems like so much work though! my FIL cleans it every, single, morning, even with the little robotic thing going around in the pool he is always cleaning and maintaining, no thank you. I can barely clean my house.
cantaloupe / 6885 posts
@chibee: my parents are talking about putting a pool in and they live just around the corner...I am so hoping they do, that would be the perfect scenario! No maintenance for me haha
pomelo / 5607 posts
It would have been a "could live with" for us, but houses that have one weren't in our budget anyway. My issues are more about the dangers of having toddlers/young kids around them, since we're just now starting to have kids, and my serious dislike of chemicals. Though my dad has an above ground salt water pool for my brother and sister (12 and 14), and apparently that works well.

I will never, ever seek out a house with a pool. If we found an awesome house that happened to have one I might consider it. I prefer paying to be a member of a community pool.
nectarine / 2465 posts
I grew up with a pool, but in the Northeast it was freezing even on hot days, so I wouldn't spend money on installing one.
GOLD / cantaloupe / 6581 posts
I don't care much either way, but I'd much rather have a community pool. We have them here but none within walking distance, which is a bummer. Our neighborhood pool charges 300$ for the summer, which we just aren't going to pay this year!
GOLD / papaya / 10166 posts
If the house doesn't have one, there better be one nearby - it's too flipping hot 9 months out if the year to go w/o one.
blogger / watermelon / 14218 posts
Deal breaker for us! We'd rather have the yard space. Luckily my close friend has a pool and they're always begging us to come over since it's so expensive to open and close it every year, so they want to get their money's worth... we're over there like every weekend in the summers!

@Bookish: whaaat?? That's insane. Ours is included in our HOA fees.
GOLD / cantaloupe / 6581 posts
@lawbee11: Yeah, it's stupid. I live in phase I of a community, and they just built phase 2. Phase 2 has a pool, which is included in Phase 2 residents' HOA fees, but we have to 'apply' to use it and pay the 300$ on top of our 300$ HOA fee! It's bonkers.
