I know it's not safe to buy a car seat used. But is it safe to buy a base used?
Is the base affected in a crash like the seat is?

My friend gave me her used base. I trust her and knew it hadn't been in an accident so I felt good taking it. I don't know if I would buy one from a stranger, though... I don't know if I could trust them to be completely honest about the condition.

I don't know how a base is affected in a collision, presumably it'll suffer some damage and may not be as safe. But on the topic of buying car seat/base pre-owned, I think it all depends on the situation, where you're buying from, the condition of the item and how much money you're paying. We've bought a used car seat in excellent condition from a very nice family in a well to do area for very little money and not had any problems with it. I wouldn't buy without going to see the item and the sellers though.

I would only buy/use a pre-owned base if I knew for sure it was never in a crash and it wasn't expired. So like the other poster, basically not from a stranger, because you never know. I'll be using one from my sister who just had a baby 2 years ago and I know for sure it hasn't been in a crash.

I let my sister borrow our car seat base but wasn't comfortable offering the car seat too, even though it has never been in an accident and not expired.

No, same rules as carseat buying. From a trusted family member or friend, sure, but not of unknown origin. Also, compared to the bucket portion, the base remains in the car & is exposed to extreme temp fluctuations which deteriorate the plastic more quickly. You can often find bases on sale for really cheap.

Same rules apply. The plastic can crack and the straps that latch the base in can tear.
But if its a reliable source I wouldn't worry about it.

If it's not expired, I would buy a used one (from reliable source).
If it is expired, the base is still plastic, and still has the possibility of having plastic that is too old and won't keep the car seat where it's supposed to be in case of an accident (cracking, etc).
