I would say yes if they are simply hourly employees of a larger company, no if it's a small company and you are working directly with the small business owner.

Yes, we've always tipped 10-20% of the move cost, depending on a few things.
Last 2 moves we did NOTHING. They even packed for us. So we did a much bigger tip than previous years.

We usually offer to do a coffee run and lunch, then tip at the end of the day assuming
we are happy with the job done.

We have always tipped, and generally also offer to provide lunch (something basic - pizzas, water, etc) or we get a box of coffee and donuts to start their day. These were for moves that took all day

Yes, same as other posters, we also tip and provide lunch and drinks.

I have always tipped. The last guys had to carry a few larger items that didn't fit in the elevator up 4 very long flights of stairs.

We always do. And always have bottles of water or gatorades on hand. I've provided lunch before as well, depending on the time of day, etc.

glad i read this because we are hiring movers to do everything in two weeks! i wouldn't have thought about tipping or having snacks actually!
persimmon / 1479 posts
Good to know! I've never had snacks but seems like a great idea.
nectarine / 2243 posts
Yep plus snacks, water/gatorade, and lunch. My first move I told the guys I'd get them pizza, and they were like "can we get sandwiches instead?" and then the proceeded to place the most high-maintenance orders I've ever taken. I'm talking dressing on the side, half wheat/half white, light mayo, no vegetables, all vegetables, burnt toast, hollowed out bread, you name it. These dudes took their sandwiches seriously. It was hilarious.

We tipped and they owned the company, they did a great job and we're super affordable. We offered food and drink but they didn't take us up on it.

Absolutely. We always but them lunch, have coffee and water available, and give cash tip. Movers work HARD.

I have always tipped. I also bought lunch the last time we moved. Just pizzas but the guys appreciated it because there wasn't really a place to just run out and get something.

We always tip the movers and provide them with drinks. We've never offered lunch though.

Yes. We are cheap but we always tip movers. I don't think they get paid that much so they really love a good tip. Most of the movers we have used have been SO appreciative of the tip, too! We also try to feed them and give them drinks.

Yes! And we provide something at the beginning of their day like donuts or bagels.
wonderful pea / 17279 posts
@birdofafeather: me either! With how much the move costs i wouldn't think tipping & providing food on top would be necessary/ customary. DH isnt going for the tipping though
When you guys tip is this on the front end or back end of the move?

So glad I read this because ours are coming in the morning!
Do you tip them individually?
Ours are coming twice because we've got an overnight hold. So, tip them tomorrow or on Friday?!

I got enough money out that it should have been a nice tip. But then hey took way longer then quoted and i wasn't going back to the bank so they barely got a tip in the end.

I worked for a moving company for one summer and my brother worked for the same company for 5 years. They might get paid decently, but they typically work really hard and have to just keep going until the job is done (sometimes 16 hour days of long labor).
I would tip at the end of the job, just in one lump sum to the guy in charge of the crew. If you have packers come one day and loaders separately you don't necessarily need to tip both separately. It is really nice to have food and cold drinks offered. If you don't want to tip, just having drinks is a nice way to show them you appreciate their work. And at least the crews I worked with were definitely more careful when they felt like the customers recognized their work.

We gave ours cheese strings and pizza. They stole one of our credit cards...

@Mrs. Goose: what the heck! That reminded me to double check the office. Today is packing day with the movers.

We've always tipped and provided drinks. We tip at the end of the move... If they did an exceptional job, their tip increases, if they broke something, tip decreases.
persimmon / 1467 posts
@Mrs. Goose: wow!
Yeah if you don't like their service don't tip them! That's why I think drinks or something are nice while they are working and then you can decide how much/whether to tip when they are almost done.
nectarine / 2085 posts
Yes, I've almost always tipped, and generously--it's hard work! The one exception was when a "you pack, we move it" crew showed up hours late (with no explanation or apology), cost my the loading dock deposit, and got me in all sorts of trouble with the building manager. And then they treated my stuff rather carelessly. I was pleasant to them and got them drinks, but yeah, no tips for that performance.

We haven't tipped on our last moves, but we also sort of did it as a side job. DH knew someone who worked as a mover, but instead of going through their company (where they only get a portion of the cost), just rented a truck and paid the guy directly. Last time, we gave him a set amount of money and told him to bring as many guys as he wanted to split the money with. He only brought his brother, but they worked super hard and fast.
We also get him a case of beer to enjoy after the long day.

This was interesting. I asked around locally and common practice seemed to not tip or people didn't know, which I why I posted. They did an amazing job and so we tipped them. He seemed genuinely surprised for a tip because he told me the amount and I said "I hope it's okay if I add your tip on the check," and he replied "Oh, wow, okay, yeah!" As in he was truly surprised. All in all even if it isn't common practice around here to tip movers, ours did an over the top job (treating everything as if breakable, putting together beds, hooking up washer and dryer), so I felt great about giving them a little extra.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: @brownepiano: yep, pretty ridiculous. It was a spare one we had in a bowl with some other store reward cards..near an iPad actually so I'm glad they didn't swipe that. Someone used it a few times at some locations we don't go to for small amounts, but the credit card company was good as they usually are and it was easy to take care of. When my husband called their boss he basically didn't care and said we should call the police if we were concerned. They weren't even a sketchy company. So we tell people not to use them!
