@twodoghouse: Amen! I completely agree!
I think she looks amazing but even if I didn't I think that commenting (publicly or privately) on the bodies of other women is not something that helps anyone.

@IRunForFun: Unflattering outfits can make you appear heavier than you actually are.

I think it's a toxic idea that you can tell someone's health by their appearance and/or that thinner obviously equals healthier. I can think of several close friends who were at their most unhealthy when they looked very fit and skinny. I agree with PP that commenting on women's (or men's) bodies in any sphere is nasty.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: agreed, which is why I said I don't think jokes should ever be made about someone's weight! Uncalled for and unnecessary.

@scg00387: So true! A good friend of mine (he's an older coworker turned good friend) just had a heart attack and he is only in his early fifties. Just by looking at him, he looks so healthy....thin, good hygiene, nice skin and teeth, etc. Life seems so fragile the older we get.

@MsLipGloss: Oh, yeah, I understand that, it just seems like that's not a good criteria for actually judging whether or not someone is overweight and shouldn't really matter.

This reminds me of Vagenda's feminist tabloid headlines from a few months ago.
"Accomplished lawyer and busy mother of two has a body."
Unless it directly impacts you, I don't see a reason to comment on someone else's weight.

@IRunForFun: I didn't use unflattering outfits as a criteria. It's just an observation. I also don't think she's overweight/fat.

I don't think she's overweight but I do think she tends to wear unflattering clothes at times.

Well Fox News aired this garbage apparently from that still sooooooo consider the source. Regardless of my political views which I will not address right now, I think the far left and far right news channels are equally bad with their bias. Bleh.
That said, I think she is wonderful, what a lovely First Lady we have. Imo she looks great, apparently it was a slow news day, come on people.

What kind of message is this sending to women and girls about how we should feel about ourselves and our bodies? Basically you are not credible if you are not at the lower end of the 'healthy' BMI scale? His comments are drenched in judgment. THIS is what is wrong with the world and what scares me about raising a baby girl.

This is so crazy! First of all...who is THAT guy to be calling anyone pudgy or whatever, I mean come on dude.
Second, whatever "side" you're on, I think many people can agree that Mrs. Obama has been one of the more hard-working and change evoking First Ladies in a long time! I think the Let's Move campaign is great.
And...Kennedy? I never thought she'd end up on Fox News....

@swurlygurl: exactly my thought. Consider the source...and the network...

Noone makes these stupid comments about male politicians. The whole thing just pisses me off. Doesn't matter what a woman achieves, people will act like her only value is in her appearance. No, I don't think she is fat and I do not think that is a topic worth reporting on
pineapple / 12526 posts
Absolutely not. I think she's hot and I hope I look half as good when Im 50.
pear / 1861 posts
Nope and the comments on it irritate me. That woman is in no way, shape or form fat. Ugh!
bananas / 9899 posts
@dreamocracy: It drives me nuts when people talk about how "hot" Sarah Palin is or how "bad" Hilary Clinton looks in whatever evidently "butch" outfit she wore. It's sad that when it comes to women, appearance is always important.
When was the last time anyone mentioned that a male politician was balding or getting fat, especially in a serious manner, implying that that somehow matters for their career?

@pui: Totally agree that there's a focus on female leaders' appearance that just doesn't happen nearly as often for male leaders!
It does happen from time to time though. Chris Christie was on the cover of Time with an unflattering profile and the headline, "The Elephant in the Room"!
http://www.mediaite.com/tv/media-pounces-on-time-magazine-for-cover-implying-chris-christie-is-fat/
Michael Kingsley famously said that, "Look, I’m sorry, but New Jersey Governor Chris Christie cannot be president: He is just too fat.":

This is too ridiculous to even comment on. No normal person thinks she's fat.

I'm actually kind of surprised to hear that people think she needs to lose weight. She is obviously very fit and active. She simply just does not adhere to what Hollywood/society deems as what an "ideal" image would be. Like people have mentioned, she is 50 so her metabolism definitely works differently at that age but I think she looks in fantastic shape. Its a little disheartening to hear that because if I had a daughter I hope she would never hear me say "oh I don't think you're fat and I know you're in shape but I still think you need to lose a few pounds. Just a few though so you can be skinny" What a way to set a good example on having a healthy approach to your body and self image to children.
