I live in Seattle and I think it rocks. However, it is definitely not the best. For some reason it seems dark to me..

But I personally think the best city in the world is San Diego.

It also depends that makes a city "the best."

Most people?
Most wealth?
Best views/scenery?
Nicest people?
Least amount of violence?
Best schools?
Largest in size?

I like the general "feel" of san Diego. It is laid back, but still feels like you're in a big city when you're downtown. And people still drive cars. And it's so close to the beach!

One of my favorite quotes about NYC is by O. Henry... "It'll be a great place if they ever finish it."

I also like another quote from a fellow New Yorker on the evening news, "Once you've lived in New York, every other place seems provincial."

NYC is pretty fantastic. I'd consider it the greatest city in the world. Though there are so many cities I haven't been to yet.

Man, I have to go to a lot of cities before I could make that decision. I have been to New York though and it was pretty awesome.

I love visiting NYC but, the beat city in the world? Nah. I liked Paris and London more. I bet Sidney is pretty amazing. And I think I love San Francisco more than NYC!

I think that's a huge matter of opinion. I do love NY..... but I personally hate cold weather and when you have NY you have cold weather. I would never ever want to live there. I'm miserable there. So for me..... not the best.

I have lived in Honolulu, Philly, SF, NYC, and London and have traveled extensively. NYC is the best to me!

Well, having lived here for about 25 years and having traveled a bit, I would say it is one. I don't know if it's the greatest because I think there are good things about lots of places, but it's pretty darn close.

I've been to a lot of big cities in the world and there is just "something" about NYC. I mean that's why anyone that has a dream goes to NYC. Not any of the other cities. Unless of course your dream is acting then it's Hollywood but even then nyC will give you a fair shot as well.

But personally I think Chicago is way more awesome. It has everything NYC has but less crowded, cleaner and people are much much nicer!

Greatest city in the US, definitely! But I would have to agree with previous posters and say that London is the best in the world!

I would take Boston over NYC any day. Second favorites for me are San Francisco and Seattle. I also have a special place in my heart for Washington DC. New York is the kind of place that is exciting for me to visit for a few days, but after about 3 days I just feel like I need to escape and find some open space. I guess I like smaller, more intimate cities. New York (and Paris and London too) always seem like behemoths to me.

@mrs. wagon: I lived in Boston for the majority of my life too, so I'm biased. I miss is sooo much. DH and I would love to move back some day.

Being from NY, I don't care who else likes it or not, and dont see the need for declarations like greatest city in the world. I've lived in Boston for the better part of a decade for DH's work and think it's kind of lame, but have to admit it's much easier raising a family here than in NY. If I could live anywhere it would probably be Vancouver, BC.

I love love NYC. It has been one of my faves to visit, along with any of the cities I visited in England and Scotland. I also love Vegas and LA.

Man I need a vacation!

I've lived in NYC, LA, and SF and although, I think NYC is pretty great, I love SF.

I've visited a lot of foreign cities and I still think SF is probably the best. I love the diversity, liberal mindset, the weather, the location (proximity to ocean, mountains and wine), but the thing I think I love most is the people. I love that we have an Asian mayor and openly gay politicians and if your heart so desires, you can walk around naked and no one blinks an eye.

@MamaMoose: Ditto. Lived in Rome, loved it, can't wait till I get to go back.
