My best friend just got laid off for the second time in two years. What a bummer.

Oh no. I'm sorry about your friend we technically aren't in a recession because GDP growth is positive, but below average. However, unemployment is still really high and has not really improved all that much since the recession ended, which sucks. I still keep reading about how companies are STILL laying people off. It is really sad. Anyway, best of luck to your friend. Hope he/she finds something soon.

Another year of no raises for my husband and me at our respective companies. That is all.

It might be over, but nothing is the same. DH is finding plenty of jobs, but they now all have ultra-specific qualifications and entry level salaries for 10+ years of experience.

@ladyfingers: That's what I'm seeing, too.
I work in the legal/higher education industry and it's definitely not over for us. Haven't had a raise in 4 years

I hate to see anyone suffer because of job loss, it's tough.
Anyway, I don't think it's over just based on GDP alone. There are so many other factors, esp. globally that come into play.

@Mrs. Yoyo: It used to be a pretty smooth move from journalism into PR and even, at times, marketing. Now all the PR jobs want 3-5 years' experience at a PR firm. And these are jobs that are paying $30,000/year. It's super depressing. Now it's like somebody at newspapers has to either stay put until they get laid off, or hope they get hired somewhere else where they'll get laid off.

@ladyfingers: That is EXACTLY what I am finding. I can't believe the people who want agency experience! I used to feel pretty good that I had a broad skill base of journalism and general communications/PR, and now it seems like a handicap because it's not deep enough in one area.

@Mrs. Yoyo: Get this: I once applied for a part-time job paying $10/hour at a local national home shopping network (that shall remain nameless lol). I was desperate and I hated my job at the time and though maybe I could go back to school and work this other job. It was for a part-time jewelry copywriter. I had 7 years' experience in newspapers, copyediting, magazine editing, and copywriting. They turned me down because I didn't have jewelry copywriting experience. This was 2 years ago.
Sorry, didn't mean to threadjack!

@highwire: What field is your bff in? It really sucks to be laid off, but twice? I hope she finds something soon.
@Mrs. Yoyo: @ladyfingers: I'm in the PR field as well (working in higher education).

@mrsjazz: She's in the radio/television/film field and has been laid off at two different production companies.

Our company did a taskforce reduction at the beginning of June and just did another one yesterday. Fortunately, I wasn't part of the group, but it's so saddening to see it happen and our office gets smaller and smaller.

@ladyfingers: That's crazy.
@mrsjazz: Higher ed PR is what I'm pursuing right now. And I do have experience (the last few years) in it. Still, everything is so competitive right now.

@ladyfingers: @Mrs. Yoyo: @mrsjazz: I work in PR too, for a university. I actually just hired a journalist (now former journalist) for a media relations position on my team....maybe there's hope?

@looch: that's just the definition of recession.
First time jobless claims are sharply down this week, which is good though no comfort in this case.

Luckily DH and I still have jobs, but I moved down to Texas 3.5 years ago with the understanding that DH would transfer his position in about a year and we would move back to my home state of Wisconsin. His company went on a hiring freeze a few months later and it's still on. They've done several rounds of lay-offs too, so it's not looking hopeful that we'll make it back anytime soon.
