J is OBSESSED with garbage trucks, I mean it's CRAZY. He liked dinosaurs for a little while, and he does like trains - but they pale in comparison. I wish he liked certain other things - like trains - more so than he does. Both DH and I loved legos growing up and wish he was more into those. I can only play garbage trucks for so long - and his fascination is lost on me.

E is fairly obsessed with cars. He pulls every toy with wheels out of his toy box daily, without fail. DH can vroom! vroom! around all day.

My daughter is super into princesses, and I find it hard to relate. She likes books too though, so I try to get those in too so we have something to bond over.
@Mrs. Pen: There are LEGO garbage trucks! Maybe he could transition to LEGO over time!!

Right now I would be so happy if she would watch a 30 minute show or 2 so this sick mama could rest a bit. But she could not care any less for TV. Other than that I cant wait for the princess phase, I hope she is into them.

Aw. Yeah, that sounds cute, but tiring, too.
I wish Ellie was more interested in cooking. She is so competent, and so helpful. She's also really artistic (so she cares about making things look nice), and really careful. But she has no interest beyond licking bowls and snacking on ingredients. Even having her stick around in the kitchen to visit with would be really fun.
I wish Lorelei liked more interesting books. Ellie really loved pretty long books at her age, and I could get away with lots more in terms of being adventurous with illustrators and content. Lorelei likes books where characters say "Ow!", the Berenstain Bears, cutesy animals, and nature facts. I love that she's come around to loving books, so I can't really complain, but it would be truly awesome if she wanted to read something over and over again that didn't make me want to remove my own brains with a salad tongs.

he has about 8 garbage trucks, and we're buying him another for his birthday next week because it's all he asks for.Oh, yes to the books! That's something I love. But then of course, he particularly loves books about garbage trucks

The food I make lol. She's refused dinner the last two or three nights. Her loss! We had spagheti carbonara one night, pad Thai another, and tonight was chicken piccata with mashed potatoes and broccoli

@Mrs. Twine: yes I totally agree on the books. We read books like Trashy Town, All about garbage trucks, and he's still into board books. I can occasionally get away with a book longer than 10 pages, but not often. I hope that by offering a wider selection frequently, he'll open up to more options as he gets older.

@blackbird: I didn't even think about this, but "Here, here!" Neither girl wants to eat what I make basically ever. I consider myself to be pretty passable in the kitchen, but they are far more interested in anything I never touched. I open a jarred sauce, "Oh, mom! This is amazing! Can you make this more often?" I make something from scratch that took a freaking long time? "Ew. What is this? I'm not eating that. Can I have a graham cracker?" Ah, well. Your meals sound delicious.

@Mrs. Twine: haha if you ask Cobi what he wants for dinner, it is ALWAYS "macaroni and cheese". Or pizza. But usually the former.

It's been almost two years now! I don't mind the whole garbage truck thing - I just wish it weren't such a rabid obsession, to the point where he doesn't really like much else. I don't wish for the phase to pass as much as an expansion of interests. I'm hoping to find some varied summer activities now that he'll be three - maybe soccer or t-ball, to offer a little variety.I asked him if he wants to go to preschool this fall and he said he wants to go to garbage truck school. Another day I asked what color house he wants to live in, and he said he wants to live in a garbage truck. So you get the idea

@Mrs. Pen: Wow, that is way beyond anything Charlie ever expressed around garbage trucks!
Olive's love of princesses, purple and pink is a little closer, although a bit less intense! She will regularly tell me about how much she loves princesses, and insist on wearing her princess dresses to school, and tells me her favorite colors are purple and pink over and over. It seriously drives me crazy! On weekends, she will ask to nap wearing her princess dress. One time she asked me if I liked princesses, and I told her I didn't like princesses very much. She got really quiet for 10 seconds or so. Then she said, "Daddy, I need you to love me when I'm a princess." I was like, Ok you win, I love princesses now. But in reality it just means that I've accepted her love of princesses... I'm still not a fan!

@Mrs. Twine: ha of course. Ragu > homemade? I will never understand. And I'm not making crazy weird exotic food! The kid loves bacon but chewed up a piece of pancetta and spit it out everywhere. Sigh.

@mrbee: have you read the Olivia princess book?? You both might enjoy it. I enjoy Olivia's annoyance with all the girls wanting to be the same pink princess
