I will keep a box for future nieces/nephews or other visitors that may come to our house. I always appreciated that my SIL had a set of wooden blocks and 2-3 other toys that should could bring out for my kids when we visited.

Also my mom did save 1 set for each of us kids to have. I got my little people set, my brother is getting the duplos and my sister has a doll house set.

Yes, I plan to save a bin for grandkids or visitors.

My parents held on to a good amount of stuff, and my LOs definitely prefer the "old" toys over newer stuff. It's so cute to see them play with my old stuff!

I've had three girls in the span of 4.5 years, and the oldest is not yet five...soooo...we won't be letting much go very soon (aside from things that get used up like art supplies, damaged (cheapie puzzles), or birthday party favor type junk). Chances are something one DD doesn't like may be a hit with the next.

However, once we do start aging out of things, I want to be more aggressive about clearing out. I plan to save things that are timeless - wooden doll house, wood puzzles, wood/magnet "paper dolls", Brio set, Calico Critters - and don't take up a TON of space. These I"ll keep with the intention of them being toys to keep at my house as a grandparent, or to pass on to my daughters if they want them. But by this I really mean classic - I wouldn't keep things with Frozen characters, for example, even if they are wooden puzzles/playsets.

I may save things like our easel/train table to give to my SILs when they have kids....otherwise I'll sell them. I won't hold onto those for 10-20 years

I'll also set aside a few very special toy (deemed as such by my girls) - whether that's a few treasured Shopkins or a My Little Pony collection or a ratty Elsa doll....but by "a few" I mean what fits in a shoebox, or maybe a large Sterilite box. No more. It's fun to see that stuff later in life, but DH's mom and my mom have recently unloaded all the "stuff" of ours that was stored at their houses, and it's such a PITA to go through!

The only other thing I'd consider saving (MAYBE!) are collectibles that have the potential to be very valuable. I made a KILLING selling my old Beanie Babies on ebay in high school. But I'd need to feel pretty certain the items would be valuable.

I'm looking forward to a GREAT BIG garage sale/eBay blowout toy sale one day and letting the kids do something fun with the proceeds. I'll do it as a one-time attempt, and anything that doesn't sell right away, I'll donate (and ideally take the kids along to do it). When I want things out, I want them gone like YESTERDAY!

@PinkElephant: Why would you even bother? I mean wouldn't you want to have new stuff for your grandkids when they come over? I don't see the allure of saving my son's stuff so that my daughter in law can roll her eyes at me about it, lol.

@looch: To each his own, I guess? I don't see saving the best quality, timeless things as a bother. I certainly don't intend to save anything plastic or noisy, nor do I intend to keep any of the nicest things if they are worn or damaged. But since we have plenty of storage, I do intend to keep a few of the things I mentioned. They're things that won't change with time - I played with similar ones (in some cases, the ones we have ARE mine) 30 years ago!

Some of our Brio tracks and our wooden dollhouse are actually things my MIL, mom, and sister kept for us (from DH/me/my nieces), and I definitely didn't roll my eyes at them. I said thank you. They look new, and the people who kept them aside for us had plenty of space to keep them - if they're in a similar condition when we're through, I'll do the same. But, since everyone's different, I've made sure to ask my SILs if they want me to save anything, and won't save anything they don't think they'll want (and we are brutally honest w/ each other!)

Now plastic crap, or things like I said that are related to "what's cool" now - that's another story entirely!!! That stuff I'll happily buy new for grandkids.

My mil saved a big bin of Legos and the brio train set which has been perfect. Between those two things she has enough to happily occupy of kid of any age. I'll likely save Legos and if my daughters get into it, a dollhouse. We never got into trains here.

I'll save a few bins of the really beloved toys for when we have little ones visiting or future grandkids. My mom saved a ton and my kids play with all of our old toys all the time! Also, it's really nice to go to someone's house who has grown children when you bring your kids...and they have a bin of toys for your kid to play with

My mom saved a few things and bought some wooden blocks. Problem is, DS doesn't really like any of the stuff she saved and would rather tear apart the kitchen.

Mil saved books, which DS loves and DH loves seeing DS enjoy his childhood books. She also bought a bunch of used toys, picking out what DS actually likes.

So I'm torn. I think it is worth having toys that visiting babies/kids can play with. But I'm not sure how many or which ones we'll keep. And as a grandparent it would be easier to pick out a few toys to buy that I know they like.

My mom saved a ton of books that I've now passed on to my kids. I'd like to save the ones that make it through in good enough shape. Maybe I'll save a toy here and there - my daughter plays with my old My Little Pony toys now but has flat out rejected the Cabbage Patch Kids

As we grow out of stuff, I'll donate to others. Maybe keep a couple things for little ones until my youngest is in Kinder for young babies but probably only wooden toys that look good to display too. I don't really feel like we have much "heirloom" stuff at this point and can't imagine holding onto it for 30 years!

So far I've only kept things he has really loved/sentimental JUST IN CASE we have another. If this round of IVF fails then I'm just getting rid of it all as he outgrows them. We're in an apartment, enough said.
Everything that isn't sentimental or special I leave in our buildings Playroom or will give to my brother in law as they Have a newborn.

For me it would come down to whether or not I have room in my house to store. I have quite a few "special" toys. Perhaps my kid just absolutely cherished them, or they are keepsake heirloom quality handmade or wooden toys. Or just the good ole indestructible matchbox cars. I don't have room in our current place but we still plan on having more kids. When we are finished and they are grown, i plan on keeping a smaller box of toys. even if they aren't used for grandkids: I can remember recently when my mom had my dads work friend over and they brought their smaller kids. The kids would have been bored out of their minds had it not been for the box of brio trains and Lincoln logs/Legos that my mom has stashed away.

I appreciate that my Mom held onto a small amount of clothes and toys from when I was a child. T is enjoying my Fischer Price record player and a hat that was in many of my family photos from when we lived overseas.

I want to save for grandkids even though DH thinks I'm crazy. My MIL saved lots of stuff and my kids enjoy her treasures so much!

We are in the middle of a massive declutter/downsize event. I just threw out and donated tons of my old toys and DDs toys...

My mom has been bringing over bags of my baby stuff. I'm convinced that she kept every outfit I ever wore and every doll I ever owned.

My DD found my shoebox of my old littlest pet shops and loves them. I'm sort of sorry I didn't keep more of them. But she wouldn't touch any one of my dolls.

I think if you're keeping things, you're doing it for yourself. Which is fine. I'm trying overall in my life to focus on non-material things and letting go of most. That said, I've kept some baby things, including toys. For me

We are saving our stuff in case we have a second. After that I will gladly help it all find a new home. I am not sentimental about things and pretty much share @Looch 's attitude. Plus we live in an apartment.

No. My MiL has kept EVERYTHING. Broken McDonalds toys from the 80's included. While sometimes it's cool (some of the toys were actually hers before they belonged to DH and BIL) I just don't have any attachment to any toys. My mom kept virtually none of our toys (minus books) and I don't care at all (and neither do my kids). Basically, I have no desire to keep up with that.
