LO is 10 months and up until a couple of weeks ago, she LOVED being read to. Now she insists on "reading" by herself. She'll take books out of her bin and flip through them (often upside down) and giggle to herself. If I try to read them to her, she'll turn the pages really fast and then grab the book and throw it. So I've resorted to reciting books by memory as she flips through on her own. Did anyone's LO go through a similar phase? Makes me sad

This is actually a good thing! I've taught reading many times, and you want to encourage all interaction with books. She's trying to mimic you when you read to her. By letting her play with the books, even if she is "reading" them upside down, you are showing her that books are good to interact with.

I don't know if it is a phase or not; but what you're describing is exactly what my LO has always done with books since she was old enough to grab them/handle them. We very rarely get to read to her because she spends the entire time "talking" over you (her voice getting louder and louder as you try to read) and gets upset if she can't hold the book and flip through at her leisure. It's a bummer for us because we love books and love to read. The only book LO will most often sit still for is a captain America comic she is obsessed with...but after a page or two she grabs it away and talks softly to herself.

if it's a phase it's been a very long one for us. this started when she was a little over a year old... she's now 27-months old and still wanting to be very independent with books - she chooses the pages she wants to go to, and grabs them away from me if i try to read to her... instead i've just resorted to pointing out the different details in the images and making things up as we "read" together. i don't worry too much about it though - given how much both me and DH love to read, i think she will come to love it too... maybe i'm an optimist!
