DH really wants to name our baby girl Eowyn. (Ay-Oh-Win)
is that TOO unique?

It's really up to you guys but I would point out that for her whole life she will need to tell people how to spell and how to pronounce her name... are you OK with that?

Not *too* unique, but yes, a little. Is there another way to spell it?

Ehhh....to be honest, I don't like the way it sounds and the way it's spelled it's asking for disasters in pronounciation.
apricot / 251 posts
it's ironic since my favorite name right now is Emily - which is in the top 10 baby names (depending on which list you look at)

i like how it sounds but the fact that you had to phonetically spell it out makes me wonder how annoying it will be for your LO to always correct people when they inevitably mispronounce it.

I like it. Although I do think it's very unique and asks for a whole lot of spelling/pronunciation problems!

I don't think anyone will ever spell or pronounce it correctly. It kinda sounds like a little kid trying to pronounce "Erin."

We only had one "rule" when naming our son, and that was his name had to be easily pronounceable in English and German.

it reminds me of the lord of the rings, and i like it! i think it's really pretty

It's too unique for me. I want something that is easily spelled and pronounced.

I have to agree with a lot of the PP when it comes to spelling and pronunciation.
pomelo / 5326 posts
Too unique for me. Agree with PP, sounds like someone having trouble pronouncing the 'R' in Erin.

Looking at it on paper, I would think it's pronounced "EE-win". Hearing it verbally, I would wonder if the other person had a lisp and it was "erin".

@.twist.: lol! i thought so, but i didn't want to get up and check! hehe
i love her character in the book, so i approve!

I think it's pretty, but it would be hard to always be spelling and pronouncing for everyone all the time!
bananas / 9899 posts
See, I love that name (sounds elvish) but I would never name my child it... doomed to misspellings and mispronunciations forever!
pomelo / 5469 posts
I know it's from LOTR, but it sounds like a lot of Welsh names we have over here... so no, I wouldn't say it's too unique. But it is unique, if that makes sense

I think it's pretty! I have a unique name myself and am constantly explaining to people how to spell and pronounce it, especially since I'm in a non-English-speaking culture. Still, I have never once wished it weren't my name. So, inconveniences are going to happen, but they're not a deal breaker in my opinion.

I would never have guessed the pronunciation from the spelling, but I think you name your daughter whatever you want!!

I would not want to sentence my kid to multiple misspellings and mispronunciations multiple times every single day.
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22646 posts
it's a pretty name, but i think the babe will get a lot of name pronunciation troubles.
GOLD / cantaloupe / 6581 posts
LOTR fan? I actually really like it! Mind you, my name is Jennifer and I *still* have to spell out my first + last name (which is also an easy name) for people on a regular, if not daily basis haha!
papaya / 10570 posts
Oooh, I like it! Very Middle Earth!! We have a lot of Welsh names that are pronounced like that - and some Irish names that are spelt really strangely - so it wouldn't be too alternative over here!
pear / 1586 posts
I know a ittle girl named Eowyn! I also knew how to pronounce it. go for it! Very pretty.
coconut / 8681 posts
I like it. I knew how to pronounce it because of LOTR and I like the way it sounds!

Even with your pronounciation guide I still don't know if its I-oh-wen or A-oh-when or neither
I personally went for a name that was more straightforward although we do still get questions if it is -line or -lyn.

I like it and of course it brought to mind LOTR... I guess if you don't mind the association go for it!
watermelon / 14206 posts
I agree with people saying the kid will be forever telling people how to spell and pronounce it.
