Ours is!
It's usually $100, but it's $319 this time. Our heat has been running no stop. It's 14 degrees outside!

Yep, I just got our bill today and almost threw up. $366, electric and gas. Last month was $212. When is spring?
apricot / 483 posts
YES! Well the electric bill is about the same it usually is ($200ish) but our gas bill that is usually <$30 is almost $300! We have a gas furnace-heated apartment and zero insulation or weatherstripping. It's 9 degrees by me right now.

We haven't gotten it yet, but our gas was up $60 last month!

I'm too afraid to look so I just haven't gotten the mail this week.

What! that's crazy.
We have gas, and it's so much cheaper. It was $63 this month, and $25 last month! It was a terribly cold January.
Electric doesn't really change except in the summer with the AC on. It averages about $100/mo.
ETA: It might be beneficial to add we're in an apt so heat is more easily conserved and we only have to heat 900 sq ft.
How big are your houses?

My electric isn't too bad this month, but I spent $609 on propane last month (which is our heat source). OUCH
wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts
@Mrs. Pen: We have gas for a 3 bedroom house and we're running $200+ even though we set it so low that we're usually cold at home! Granted we also use gas for cooking but I don't think that contrbutes much to the overall bill
Electric is under $100; between $50-$70 but in the summer it definitely jumps into the hundreds!

oof. I don't know yet... but I'm sure it is. Our electric bill was normal but our heat is gas....
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22276 posts
Ok curiosity got the best of me. $183 it was $133 last month and $80 the month before. Yikes.
honeydew / 7303 posts
@Mrs. Pen: we have a 3000 Sq foot house! Our basement vents are closed though! We're going to Lowes to get window coverings but it's already too late!
honeydew / 7303 posts
@Bao: ahhh!!! Yours is so low compared to mine! Mines never been over 100$ before. Are you all electric too?
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21616 posts
@yellowbird: yeah. I suppose if you tripled our sq space our bill would triple too So $300 is reasonable given size of space.
apricot / 483 posts
@Mrs. Pen: 1900 SF apartment, 3 bedrooms. Literally can see light outside through the cracks where our front door should have weather stripping. We're basically heating the outdoors. They won't come fix it

these months are the reason we are on a budget plan throughout the year. we pay $143 for electric and $143 for gas year round for a 3000 sq ft home
persimmon / 1085 posts
Our electric bill was $350 last month and I don't want to see this month's bill. (comes this week) This winter has been COLD! We only have a 1200 sq foot townhouse, but our bills are high even with a one year old HVAC and less than 2 yr. old windows.
honeydew / 7303 posts
I just called and apparently the people who lived here last year were getting 600$ electric bills!!!!
I just applied for the budget plan so our new bill is 187 and it should go down after we are here a year so the previous owners huge bills will go away!
honeydew / 7916 posts
Ours was $300-something but that's $100 less than this time last year. It was worth it to replace one of our two HVAC units! (We're heating a lot of space...3100 sq ft plus basement)
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22276 posts
@yellowbird: oh well that was our heat bill which is gas. Our electric runs us another $80ish.
admin / watermelon / 14210 posts
not much because our apartment is heated by radiator which we don't pay for. on really cold nights i have to turn on a space heater in our bedroom though and i think our electricity will be higher next month!
bananas / 9628 posts
our electric bill is always pretty much the same, around $75, a little more in the summer when we're running the central AC, but i know our gas bill is going to be through the roof! we have gas heat & have been keeping it warmer than we usually do because i don't want our skinny sick kitty getting cold and wasting his energy trying to stay warm <crazy cat lady>

Yes, ours was $300 due at the end of the month...I'm sure my bill at the beginning of Feb. will be at least $400. So sad, since we're only in 1800-ish sf. I called the electric company yesterday and cried!
pear / 1580 posts
We have gas heat, and though our electric bill is around the same, our gas bill has quadrupled! Insane.
nectarine / 2134 posts
Our gas and electric bill was super low this month -- we're in California and it's been 70 degrees here! Granted we've just declared a drought, so that's not good
wonderful olive / 19353 posts
YES!!!! We're normally in the lower to mid 200's. This month, we're practically at $400!!!!!!!!
watermelon / 14467 posts
$171...Pretty high for us! There was a gas leak on our street and it's been so, so cold. It's in the single digits right now.
pomelo / 5820 posts
Our gas bill was $350 this month. Our windows are so old and drafty. We need new ones! These bills are ridiculous.
cantaloupe / 6164 posts
December was actually not too bad for us weather-wise (Virginia weather is insane), so our bill was only $130. I'm scared to see our January bill though!
pineapple / 12234 posts
Uggggh, this makes me stressed. I don't want to check! With our Christmas lights up last month, I'm sure it will be higher than usual.
pineapple / 12053 posts
yeah, we have 1 meter for two units (so dumb) so we get into overages pretty quickly. we have a small place, but super inefficient. the landlords just put these new heaters in and our bills sky rocketed! apparently it was over $600 for gas and electric for our 2 600 sq ft units! in southern california!
