Our current family plan (directly through the health insurance company) is going up to $994/mo. I really hate our country.

Nope, it's going down slightly. My employer switch carriers because our current carrier went up by 8%, if I remember correctly.
ETA: if it makes you feel better, my same plan for a family would be $1,116. We're on a employee & spouse plan since the kids are on child health plus.

Wow, that is SO high! I'm sorry.
My daughter and I have always been on my husband's plan (with a corporation) because it kept us from paying much outside of his paycheck, even for hospital visits. Unfortunately, it's going up $100 a month, so I'm switching her and myself back to the state standard plan offered through my job. We'll be saving $300 a month, although we'll lose a ton of convenience and per-visit savings.

Mine stayed the same and the plan got better. LO is on DH's plan and his actually went down!

@LBee: yes. I really don't understand how this is okay. We are already on the value plan.

@mediagirl: Wow that is crazy!
Mine is through my employer and the premium is staying the same for next year, but they are changing networks to use Aetna.

We are switching from DHs company to mine, it will save us almost 200/month.
pineapple / 12793 posts
Yuck, that really sucks!
I do not miss American health insurance.

DH's plan is going up so his employer is reviewing whether to switch or not.

Between medical, dental, and vision, it is going up. But not too much, maybe $50 a month.
watermelon / 14467 posts
Yes. They are imposing a monthly $150 surcharge for spouses who are covered on the plan but have the option to be covered by their employer. This plan is really good though, especially if I get pregnant again next year, so we are going to suck it up and pay for me to be covered on it. The healthcare plan offered by my employer is just terrible.

Yes, supposedly due to the "cadillac tax" portion of the ACA. We currently have AMAZING coverage, but it's all going to hell because apparently my company would have to pay extra tax for giving us such good coverage. So instead of paying it, they're making our coverage bad enough to not have to If I had a baby right now, it would cost $250 total, from first appointment through labor and delivery. But since I cannot get pregnant and give birth in one month, it will now cost at least $1500. Yay.

I'm on my husband's plan which went up slightly. At my work they are completely changing the plan, the premium is cheaper but the coverage is not nearly as good. They switched to a high deductible plus HSA plan. People are pissed. Thanks "affordable" care act!

My husband's school is currently overbudget on health insurance because costs went up 20%!!!!
That seems so absurd to me.
GOLD / eggplant / 11517 posts
Yeah, just like the last few years, it got more expensive for less coverage.
pomegranate / 3375 posts
I am switching companies, as my current plan was set to increase 47% and reduce coverage. I'll be paying $430 a month for myself and LO, with pretty good coverage. DH gets free health insurance through his employer.
cantaloupe / 6131 posts
We are switching back to my state employer after spending a year on DH's employer coverage while I was on maternity leave. We have the same HMO either way, but mine will save us $200 a month and we have slightly cheaper co-pays (like a $5 difference).
nectarine / 2765 posts
That's awful!
Ugh. I just spent my afternoon looking through our choices for this year. We'll be paying about the same BUT going down in coverage. To keep the same coverage, we'd pay about 400 extra a month.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
Our company is changing plans, so it's actually going down, but now we'll have a higher deductible.
persimmon / 1495 posts
Ugh, yes. We do private insurance through BCBS and for the 3 of us, it's supposed to be going from about $750 to $1000! My DH gets a small health insurance stipend from his employer (a very small firm), so I'm going to ask him to talk to his boss about an increase in the stipend to cover the change.

It's going down, but the plan isn't as good. We're hoping to remain healthy next year but will have enough in savings to meet our OOP Max if we need to. Trying to pick our plan this year was a headache.
pear / 1930 posts
Maybe?? We're only offered a high deductible plan for next year. Premiums are going to be $1000 cheaper this year, but I'll have to pay a $1600 deductible instead of $300 and I will also have to pay DD's cardiologist appointment out of pocket to the tune of about $1000. But work is also giving me $1300. I haven't done the calculation.
pear / 1718 posts
No, but our copays are. I am thankful that is the case, but man those still add up quickly!
grapefruit / 4800 posts
Wow reading all these makes me feel very fortunate. We have good insurance through my husbands job. We have to pay I think 250 out of pocket a month for a family of 4 and that includes vision and dental
grapefruit / 4418 posts
No. I work for a hospital that's self funded. It's so amazing, I don't think I'll ever leave just because of the insurance. I have 0 deductible or copays as long as I use our docs and facilities. (There's a $100 copay for
Hospital admission but that's it!) Even if we don't, its still minimal cost. I pay <$150 a month for our family. My old employer I paid over $500 a month for us (and my portion was covered by my employer 100%!) and that was a $4000 deductible plan!
wonderful olive / 19353 posts
Amazingly, yes! And our plan is a little better also (lower deductibles, Out of Pocket, co-pays, etc.). Our firm sends out quarterly employee surveys to the firm and 80% of the responders said they were unhappy with our current insurance benefits. Management took this into consideration and adjusted our plan for 2016.

Mine went up $10 a paycheck so I cant complain - its for DD and I (and soon DD2).
Last year though it went up $30 a paycheck and I all of the sudden had a deductible...not cool.
hostess / wonderful persimmon / 25556 posts
@Chuckles: interesting, we get a stipend, as well. They actually reduced it last year, though. So it's cheaper for us to go back onto my company's plan than it would be to stay on private and get the stipend.
nectarine / 2641 posts
We have Tricare since DH is retired military, and we don't pay for it. But DH's company health care went up this year (we opt out). And their coverage is awful. DH wasn't allowed to opt out at his last job, so we had double coverage and never paid anything. This year we went to just Tri-care a month before LO2 was born, and we ended up paying quite a bit.
hostess / papaya / 10540 posts
@mediagirl: Yup! Costs are going up and coverage is going down.
persimmon / 1495 posts
@mediagirl: unfortunately there's no actual plan through his firm because it's so small. Taking the stipend, which would *maybe* cover insurance for a single person, is the only option. And I work part-time, so no insurance here either. I'm actually trying to find a full time job right now and a big reason is because we really need the benefits.
grapefruit / 4045 posts
Somehow I think my health insurance deductible is going to be less, but my dental insurance is going to be more. I get insurance through my work.
I don't understand the Obama care insurance, but isn't that supposed to provide "affordable" insurance to everyone?
hostess / wonderful persimmon / 25556 posts
@agold: it's called the affordable care act. it's not really affordable...to anyone. But the politicians don't care because they're all set. What bugs me is you don't see these things in the news...
grapefruit / 4045 posts
@mediagirl: I do know one girl who has insurance through the affordable care act and it seems to be very affordable to her. She goes to therapy regularly and gets prescriptions and pays about $2.00 for each. But she's a single mom with no job. So it might be affordable for people with no jobs.
