Like by adoption or your SO is a different race? Both my husband and I are Caucasian and our child will be too.
I got to thinking about what it would be like to raise a child in a culture I'm not familiar with, or try and teach them about their heritage if they are adopted. What are your experiences?

Dh and I are the same ethnicity.... Both eastern European Jews. So far our first two are biological, but if we do have a third it will be adopted.

I'm Chinese and DH is German/Irish so LO will be both my ethnicity and not. I don't really find it to be an issue at all. I am looking forward to exposing her to both cultures as a part of her life.

Same as @locavore_mama: DH is Thai, I'm white. But he's honestly not super into exploring his ethnicity, so I don't know how much of it the kids will get. So far, it has meant LO is learning the Thai words for bodily functions, and that's about it!

DH and I are different ethnicities so our baby will be a mix of cultural backgrounds.

We are raising a beautiful little girl who has a different ethnic makeup than us. I have several blog posts on race and talking about race. It's complex but also, underlying it all, there is an element of love that transcends everything at home. It's just the social constructs that we're forced to deal with on a daily basis that take more time and thought.

@Danizaur: my LO is brown with dark eyes (like her dad) and I, very, very pale and have blue/green eyes. I'm not worried at all about cultural issues, but I've had people make funny comments already when they see her (if my husband isn't around).
I had a nanny (a stranger) come up to me in the park and ask if she's mixed, and the Lactation consultant looked at her and said, "oh! Well! Is your husband.....?" And then didnt finish the sentence. It was pretttty hilarious because I knew she was trying to find a PC way to ask if he's a different race. Lolz.

My Lo is mixed ethnicity. half British, half Peruvian.
At this point it looks like he got mostly my coloring, but daddy's ability not to burn in 5 minutes in the Sun, unlike me.
we plan on taking him to both of our countries, as well as teaching him spanish.

Yes. I'm Filipino American and DH is Swedish. DD will be raised in Sweden, so she'll essentially be more Swedish than American, but we plan to visit my family back in CA often. I want to instill a few Filipino / Asian cultural beliefs upon her, but its a little tricky since its the opposite of what they believe here.
For instance, showing respect to elders by addressing them in a certain way, helping them out, etc. They don't necessarily do that here. Using a formal tone or language to the elderly (or anyone for that matter) can seem cold, and personal space and privacy is taken to a whole new level here, so offering someone a seat or helping to carry their groceries (just an example) is usually thought of as more intrusive than helpful.
What will really be tricky is when we visit the States. It will be hard to switch to every older person is your "auntie" or "uncle" compared to when everyone's a stranger you don't even address.

In Korean and mr bee is half Japanese half white. They will most definitely be learning about Korean culture (their favorite foods are Korean), and we're going to send them to Korean school. I want them to learn about Japanese culture too but that will be up to mr. Bee!

DS is half Indonesian and half Caucasian (I'm a Portuguese, Greek, German, English mix, lol).
He has dark skin and hair like his dad but otherwise looks like me. Living in the city he will be exposed to many cultures and we plan to teach him about them all.

I'm Thai and my dh is Jewish American. Dh's parents are not strict practicing Jews but we hope she will learn the traditions. We hope she will speak a little Thai, she has a Thai nanny that brings her to the thai temple so she is exposed to a lot of thai since we only speak English in our house.

Our LO will be the same race as us (we are both Caucasian), but will be a mix of ethnicities. I am German, Irish, and Italian, and we know that DH is Swiss and English, but on his dad's side we're not super sure. We think German and Irish and something else.

I'm Korean and DH is Chinese so while DD is full Asian, she is still needing to know and learn about two cultures.

Dh and I are both white/native american. LO is 100% black.
When it's the three of us, or when we're with family and friends, we seemingly forget about the difference. It's when we're in public sometimes that the stares can be unnerving.
Lo is only 6mo so we're actively discussing the future, as we have been since before he was born. We know that we cannot/will not ignore the differences in our race, so we're trying to figure out how we will embrace it.
We have several close friends/mentors who are black and have been invaluable resources to every little question that I never thought I'd need to ask (what will an allergic reaction look like? What do I buy for his hair? Why is the baby lotion like water on his skin?).
