My husband is pretty good if I give him a list. I have to be very specific, but how else would he know what I want if I wasn't? My dad on the other hand..... sucks at it. I appreciate him shopping for us once in a while, but sometimes I think it would just be easier if I did it myself. I get blamed for putting difficult things on my list. I put mushrooms, hummus, and the refrigerated ravioli. He had to call me a million times to ask where those things are. Makes me greatful that DH is better at the store!

He's a great grocery shopper! We go to the market together a lot, so he knows what I like and what I usually get.
The first time he went on his own without me I was so surprised and happy.

@Andrea: My brother isn't allowed to go because he comes home with too much crap. Sugared cereal, candy, etc.

Uhhhh....only if I'm super super specific. For instance, I can't say "buy tomatoes". I have to tell him to buy the small round cherry tomatoes in the yellow box. If he sees them in a green box, he'll call me and say he can't find them but he found some in a green box but that they look the same. I'm like "JUST BUY THOSE THEN!". UGH.

If I sent DH on his own he'd come back with bags full of pizzas, chorizo and chilli, and maybe some cookies for his tea... A disaster of a man:)
To be honest I think men have to live on their own, without moms, girlfriends or wives, for at least a couple years before they're any good at most of those things. We're stocking up on nappies at the moment and I grab a pack every time we're shopping, size 1 or 2, and he actually pointed at the size 6 today and asked why couldn't we get those, they're cheaper... Because they're huge, you gobshite:) -
Haha DH is the one who cooks, so he's a great grocery shopper! We usually go together though.

My husband is so cheap he wouldn't buy random things at the store unless it was on sale. Last week, he bought 10 boxes of frozen pizza because they were 2 for $5. We've never had frozen pizza ever in the 7 years we've been together. And then the other day, he came home with 2 boxes of maxi pads. I"m like "Um, why did you buy me generic brand maxi pads?" and he said they were on clearance.
I'm 5 months pregnant.

@artbee: yeah seriously, DH and i met when we were 17 so he never had to grocery shop on his own. on the other hand, who taught me? i just KNOW how.

@Andrea: I used to love going to the store right before school started in college. All the freshman boys would have their carts full of such crap. I'm sure it was their first time ever grocery shopping, and they were loving it.

DH is a baaaad grocery shopper. He doesn't read the packages on anything! If I ask him to buy blueberry bagels, he brings home cinnamon raisin. If I ask him to get plain cream cheese, he brings home onion flavored. If I ask him to buy size 5 diapers, he brings home 5 toddler!!
So frustrating. I'm trying to teach him to read the label! -

My husband is a really good grocery shopper. But he does usually come home with extras.

He's a fantastic shopper! Which is fantastic because I hate grocery shopping. For a long time we'd go together, but then he realized just how much I hate it and he happily took over going by himself. He's also the cook in our house, which is great.

My husband likes to do the grocery shopping online, which I don't particularly like especially for the produce...I like to see what I am buying.
He's good, I give him a list if we're not going together and he always gets exactly what I asked for. He also lived on his own for a long while, so he had to learn what to do.

DH is pretty good at grocery shopping with a list, but he only goes alone at our small neighborhood grocer. For our big hauls (at the larger stores) we go together. On occasion he'll forget a few things, but he's pretty used to where things are by now so I hardly ever get calls asking where things are anymore.

He's okay. He can't go with me because he gets all excited about food and starts dumping things in the cart and trying to explain why we need them. If he goes alone, he'll come home with stuff I wouldn't have bought, like soda.

He's good with a list... otherwise he'll stay there for a few hours and buy everything and anything under the sun!

He's ok if I provide a very specific list. I can't just say "sour cream" and trust that he has noticed the type I buy for the last three years we've been living together, I have to say "store brand low-fat sour cream." And when we shop together, he annoys me so badly because he is a cart-abandoner. He will leave it in the middle of an aisle and wander off to grab something, and we're always there at the busiest times so he is creating a huge traffic jam.

@banana: Hahaha that's brilliant! I don't have that specific worry as he's too shy to buy anything girly or intimate- I was the one buying our condoms, last summer:) He has promised that if I need breast pads etc pp he'll send his mum to the chemists for them!

Yes, he is! He knows generally what I buy and tends to buy mostly the same things when he goes. But, I usually provide him with a list anyways because he is not as familiar with what we have in stock.

@miss-spunkin: Yes,, I can use them post-partum but probably not for another 2 years since I plan on breastfeeding for a year. Not to mention, I don't like the kind he bought. It doesn't have wings and I need my wings!! I told him it didn't have wings so I didn't like those. And he said "Oh, ok want me to return them?" OMG, please don't. We go to the supermarket on daily basis and I don't want the manager giving us a stink eye for returning maxi pads that were on CLEARANCE.
@aunt pol: Thankfully (ok, maybe not) DH isn't shy about buying feminine products. He has no problems buying me pads or yeast infection creams or whatever else I need. That's awesome that you bought the condoms! I'd be too shy to buy them. Once, I bought a pregnancy test and the guy kept staring at me. So I mumbled to my husband, "Ok this is the LAST time I'm buying Cindy these pregnancy tests.". DH rolled his eyes and smiled at the clerk. I almost killed him.
@andrea: He'll buy them for me when I ask him to. But I'm VERY specific about the kind that I want. Bad luck? LOL. I wonder what kind of bad luck he had?

DH is ok at it, but doesn't pay attention to the labels or expiration dates (and he doesn't know what half of the stuff is in the produce section). He actually HATES grocery shopping and has probably only gone a handful of times since we've been married.

My DH is an excellent grocery shopper. He needs a list from me and will usually only buy what's on the list (to save money) but the last few times he went he actually thought proactively about things we need and bought a few extra off list items!
It's so cute though because even when it's him doing the cooking he'll have no idea how the things he's buying are going to result into a finished product. He's always like "Oh that's why I had to get an onion!" as hes' cooking.

My husband is a TERRIBLE, horrible, no good, very bad grocery shopper. He will always, 100% of the time come home with 3-4 bags of things NOT on the list but usually forgets something that IS on the list. The only time I even bother asking him to go is if I'm in the middle of making something and need it immediately. He hates going so I usually have to offer something in return like doing on of his chores, watching one of his shows, etc. While he's there he will call me a minimum of 4 or 5 times as well as send pictures of the items because he always gets the wrong stuff.
My husband is so good at so many things but grocery shopping is most definitely not one of them.

He's good if I give him a list. He wont deviate from it unless the store doesn't have something. I'm horrible in that I usually come home with WAY more than I originally intended.

Yup, I have to be pretty specific, too. Also, it has to be a short list. He has been really good with getting things on sale and using coupons when he buys anything. I taught him well!
