Is your work/boss understanding if you need to stay home if LO is sick and can't go to daycare?
I start a new job in 2 weeks and I'm hoping they are understanding! I really hope this fall/winter season arent too bad as far as colds/flus go. I remember taking off/working from home so many days last year!

Nope! It was noted on my performance evaluation that I did not give 2 weeks notice to use sick time. I'm sorry I don't know 2 weeks in advance that my kid won't feel well!

@cmomma17: Uhh...isn't it called sick time for a reason? Are there stipulations in your company handbook that indicates you have to let them know 2 weeks in advance to use it? I'd roll my eyes too!
Luckily, my boss is so cool about sick time. Whenever I have to take time off for S, she's more than understanding which makes for a really awesome work environment.

I'm a teacher, so I'm kind of 50/50 on this. Technically, we are allowed to take our sick days whenever, but informally it is *extremely* frowned upon to take a sick day before OR after a school holiday of any kind, during state testing days (of which there are now MANY, I'm talking weeks of testing now), during days when some teachers are out on field trips, since it's hard to get substitutes.
It makes it really hard, since obviously I can't predict when my baby is going to be sick. And if you call in sick on a state testing day, for example, that is something that the principal will always remember, like you'll be marked as someone who isn't a team player.

@Mamaof2: yes, they said they are flexible and you can work from home if needed. but if LO is sick and can't go to daycare, it's going to be hard to actually get any work done!

@cmomma17: that's ridiculous. How can *anyone* know when they will be sick? haven't they hear about stomach flu, viruses, etc? Is it PTO or official sick days?

My work is really understanding. It helps that my manager has four kids of his own, so he completely understands and is very supportive!

My current boss is really cool about it. But i start a new job in a month and....we'll see. Between DH and I, it just is what it is.

Not at all. We used to have unlimited sick days. If you were sick you stayed fine no big deal. Then DD got the stomach flu and I had to use four days in a row to care for her and when I got back to work on Monday the policy changed to only six per year.

Just about everyone on my team is a parent, so they get it, especially around the beginning of the school year.

My company policy allows sick time to be used for caring for a sick child so that makes me feel more comfortable about it. I haven't had to use any yet fortunately but I think my boss would be understanding. He doesn't have children but seems to get it somewhat. I'd try to work a few hours from home if baby was sleeping.

Very understanding. DH stays home w/them which helps a ton. However, if I'm needed at home even at a moments notice, my boss is very understanding. She has the attitude that family comes first & the work will be here when you return.

Hm. Supportive on the surface, lots of, "Oh, I hope she feels better," but that quickly morphs into, "So, will you be in this afternoon?"
Kinda pisses me off because I don't get paid for sick days, so clearly I am not gonna take 'em for fun.

My work is pretty understanding, I don't normally work since a sick toddler doesn't leave a lot of time for that, I just have to take a sick day. I've been called at work to come pick up LO from daycare, and my boss is always very understanding.

As of right now - totally!! And I absolutely love that I can work from home. It's not like I want my kid sick nor can determine when he is. So having a flexible boss has been a huge plus for me.
I'm debating about swapping jobs, but am super duper afraid of losing the flexibility I have here since my next boss might or might not have kids so I'm unsure if he can relate and be as flexible. Sigh.

@lizzywiz: Same here. I have unlimited sick days and no one has ever given me a hard time, but I feel a lot of underlying tension about it from my boss. He's supportive outwardly, but then will say "But you'll be on to lead the 11am call, right?"

No one in my department has kids and I know that was part of the reason why we were all picked. My boss doesn't like kids and would not be supportive of taking time off to care for a sick kid.

Yes. My immediate boss isn't even in the same state as me, so it often doesn't affect her. I just work from home.

I really hope my new employer is understanding! I'm a little nervous about it all, and knowing my luck LO will get sick my first week! Sounds like lots of you have great, family friendly understaning employers which is awesome! My new job seems to be as well- but you never know until you get into a situation. I feel badly for those whose boss's arent understanding 
It's not like we can help it that our children get sick; especially being in daycare!
