@bloved: Oh wow! Congrats!
@YogiRunner: beautiful sounds great!
I just got an email from the clinic about IVM and I'm seething with anger just looking at the break down of costs that totals about 18k. I was waiting for next year for some insurance coverage thinking that would cover most of it, but no, I'd still owe over 10k. For some shot in the dark pretty much experiment. Or I could just do another traditional cycle at home. I have no idea what to do again. When they said "not as expensive as traditional IVF", I was thinking 6-10k maybe?? not 18!!! But then again a cycle at this clinic is about 30k, so I guess they were accurate in saying it's "not as expensive"... but (!)#@!(@$)!*%)!@*$!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I mostly lurk too. I'm still recovering from the last round. Good luck Ladies with your new cycles! and
@Bloved - hoping your ultrasound goes well!

@YogiRunner: beautiful is just what you want to hear! Wishing you lots of luck!!
@PurplePumps: that is crazy! I am so sorry for all this additional stress you are having to go through.

@YogiRunner: Eeeeekkk!! Very exciting! Want to post your picture? How long does the doctor keep growing the other embryos until he freezes them?
@PurplePumps: Oh wow. So sorry. I was expecting the IVM to be about $6K too. Wow. I might consider something else based upon cost alone. I'm so sorry again.
@MrsMed: I hope you recover well. Be extra nice to yourself.

@purplepumps: Why in heaven's name is your clinic so expensive? And 18K for IVM sounds absolutely crazy. Are they making you guarantees? How frustrating. I'm sorry.
pomegranate / 3809 posts
@agold: I am reconsidering. I'll have to talk to DH more about this. I think we need to draw some kind of line, either financial or # more cycles before we just stop.
@MrsMed: Guarantee. I wish. Honestly, I'd pay twice that if there was a guarantee to walk away with a healthy baby though. I guess they get away with those charges since they are supposed to be the best. We were supposedly prepared to pay whatever it took for our "last" attempt with the best, but when I actually see numbers, I'm not so sure anymore.

Thanks ladies! I called to see if anymore could be frozen, and sadly there is only 1 in the freezer. Can't help but feel pretty upset. Sigh.
@PurplePumps: That is absurd. I'm so sorry about the hurdles that are coming at you.
ETA: And I feel silly for whining about only one frozen. We are lucky to have any and our little blast looked so good. Trying to have some perspective here and stay positive...

@YogiRunner: Yay! Sending so many prayers and best wishes! Sounds like you stuck with only one beautiful embryo for transfer. I'm sorry that only one other went to the freezer, but this could be all you need!
I have to ask a non-exciting transfer question. How much water did you drink and when did you start drinking it? I "failed" my trial transfer yesterday because they said I didn't drink enough. The techs said it looked like I had when they checked me beforehand, but the RE said my bladder wasn't pushing my cervix down enough to do the trial. I drank about 45 oz starting at 1.5 hours before my appointment (it took me about 20-25 mins to get it down). The RE said she could use a "tenaculum" to pull it down, but that it would hurt very bad. She said I had to at least double up on the water... So like 100 oz. She said otherwise my cervix isn't abnormally situated. Any ideas or experiences here?

@YogiRunner: I can see how you're disappointed after having so many to start with. Big hugs! I hope your beautiful embryo sticks, and the freezer baby is their sibling!
honeydew / 7463 posts
@YogiRunner: I had 13 eggs retrieved, 11 fertilized, 10 made it to day 5, 8 survived biopsy for PGD, and only 1 of those 8 was "normal".
When my doc called to tell me we had 1 normal embryo I almost cried. He said (very nicely) that I was lucky to even have just 1 and I should be ecstatic.
I think we just get into our heads what we expect or would like to happen (5 in the freezer, whoopeeee!) and when we're told "only 1" it's hard not to feel disappointed. If I go through this again I think I'd STILL feel a little sad if I only had 1.
But, even though it's such a cliche around here, it is true that all you need is 1. That 1 I had is now my 11 month old son. And you have one BEAUTIFUL one burrowing in there right now, hopefully getting comfy for a long 9 months So try to stay positive!
honeydew / 7463 posts
@Amorini: I actually wasn't told to drink water or a specific amount before my transfer. Was just told not to pee beforehand!
nectarine / 2433 posts
@YogiRunner: I understand that it is disappointing to only have one frozen but my RE told us that only 30% of cycles yield any frozen embryos at all. I have a 4 month old DD from our first eSET. FX your good looking blast is getting comfy

@PurplePumps: The costs involved are making me seethe, and that's being nice about it. I HATE that our plans for family all come down to cost. This whole thing is unfair.
@YogiRunner: Focus on your beautiful emby! xxx
@Amorini: I always have issues with having a bladder full enough. I drink loads of water, feel like I'm bursting and REALLY need to pee - and then when they scan, it's not full enough. Crazy! Try starting to drink it a little earlier. (Be warned: the fullness hurts sometimes!)
Started the Puregon jabs today. Double jabs for another week, then scan & BT to check on follicle progress next Friday. Glad to get going!

@Amorini: @AmeliaBedilia: @SweetiePie: @mrswin: @jaguar: Such wonderful perspectives. You guys are the best
clementine / 849 posts
@Amorini: dude, that sounds like a crap ton of water for your bladder not to be filled enough. Could you sip a little at a time starting an hour+ before, taking your time? Might help slowly expand it and be more comfortable?
persimmon / 1114 posts
as others have said, I understand the disappointment, but it really only does take 2. And if that one frozen is better than a locker full of subpar frozen ones, you are ahead of the game. @YogiRunner:
@Amorini: that seems like a lot of water. When did you start drinking? My clinic says not to start drinking until you arrive for the transfer. I don't know if that makes a difference....
pomegranate / 3809 posts
@Amorini: 100 oz?!!?!? That sounds insane!!! The average bladder only holds 16-24 oz!! I drank like 2 16 or 20oz gatorade my first cycle and I was about to BURST. Ok, "about to" is a lie... I kind of ended up peeing a little on the table after the transfer cause it was so painful. *runs and hides in shame*...........
The second time I was smarter and only drank a bit more than half of bottle, so 15 oz? And that was plenty.

@PurplePumps: I really hope you and your husband can figure out your next step without too much stress. Drawing a line is certainly hard to do. At this point in my journey, I'm thinking one IVF will be it for us. Its all just too much money. But then again, you never know. I'm keeping you in my thoughts.
@YogiRunner: Don't be sorry for whinning. Your expectations are all valid. But you really only need one embryo and you have two. So you've got great chances! Please remind me, is this your first IVF and are you in the unexplained IF category? Did you do genetic testing on the embryos?
@Amorini: I'd drink the ocean up if i could avoid the "tenaculum" . Good luck with that.
@SweetiePie: Your one strong embryo is so inspiring to hear about!
@mrswin: Gees. Only 30%?? These stories are certainly sobering to hear. I think I've been having inflated expectations as I'm starting my own IVF. Yikes.
@jaguar: Good luck with your meds! I'm so excited for you. Do you do the shots yourself?
clementine / 849 posts
@agold: Yes, this is my first IVF. Technically unexplained but my AMH sucks. RE jacked me up to 450 iu of Gonal-F and 150 of Menopur after the first monitoring appointment. And no genetic testing... I actually wish we could have but my clinic only does it when "medically necessary" and my insurance doesn't cover it.
Here's a lighter topic for this crowd.. what are your favorite distractions in the 2ww or just to forget about IF for awhile? Here are mine:
1. YouTube videos of my favorite funny gals/guys: Jimmy Fallon, Amy Schumer, Will Ferrell, Aziz Ansari.
2. The Bachelor/ Bachelor in Paradise. It is SO BAD but also sooooo good.
3. Pinteresting anything non-bebe related.
4. Laundry. Something about doing it soothes me.
5. Meditation.
6. Work (ha! yeah right. It's usually 20 min of work, 10 min of googling.... all day).
pomegranate / 3764 posts
@agold: thanks! Yep, I do all my own injections. Hubby is normally gone for work by the time I am up & showered, so I've always done them myself.
grapefruit / 4045 posts
@YogiRunner: My insurance doesn't cover anything related to IVF. Sucks. And genetic testing is something like $8,500 at my RE's office. As for TWW distractions, I do love Bachelor in Paradise and YouTube. Have you come across EdBassmaster? He's my recent favorite. And, fortunately or not, work keeps me totally distracted.
@jaguar: Your blue pen looks exactly like my follistim pen. I do stomach shots on my own, too. Will you have to eventually do progesterone in oil shots that go in your back? Who will do those? My husband works weird hours so I think I will need to call my sister to do them for me. I'm anticipating that I won't be able to do those myself - physically or mentally.
pomegranate / 3764 posts
@agold: Aus doesn't have PIO shots available, for whatever reason. We have crinone + heavy duty pessaries instead!
@YogiRunner: colouring, reading, cheesy old TV programs (currently watching old school Melrose place!)
grapefruit / 4045 posts
@jaguar: Will you have to do intramuscular shots at all? If not, you are so lucky. I really really don't want to do it. Then my sister (who did it multiple times with multiple IVFS) makes me feel like a pansy for not wanting to do all I can to have a baby. But seriously - have a baby vs intramuscular back shots. Ugh. It truly made me drag my feet about the IVF.
persimmon / 1114 posts
@agold: my husband typically does the pio shots. However, last Ivf he was away on business for over a week and I had to do them myself. I was dreading it, and not quite sure how I'd be able to do it, but it was pretty easy and actually less painful then when he does it. Just wanted to give you some encouragement in case you have to do it yourself!
grapefruit / 4045 posts
@bloved: Wow! Thank you so much for sharing that. I found the stomach shots to be easier when I did them myself. So maybe you've given me courage to try the big needles if and when that time comes.
persimmon / 1114 posts
@agold: also, I don't know if your nurse gave you "tips" but these are the ones that mine taught me to make it easier: Heat your back with a heating pad prior, run the shot under hot water for 10-20 seconds before giving it to yourself, and massage the area afterwards. It still hurts, but they definitely help!
honeydew / 7463 posts
@agold: @bloved: I did all of my own PIO shots as well. And I did my IM trigger shot. It wasn't bad! Actually, I did all shots on the right side and when I had to do left side, I injected the needle and my husband would then push the plunger to push the medicine. If that makes sense. For some reason I had a hard time with the viscosity of the oil when I did the left side (like my left hand/arm was weaker).
I didn't heat my butt before hand but what I did do was wrap the syringe with oil in the heating pad for about 30 seconds. Probably same effect as running under water. Then heated and massaged after.
Not going to lie - the shots themselves weren't bad. But I did get lumps after several weeks and I did feel like i was running out of injection sites. Not sure if it's normal amount of time, but I had to keep doing the shots till I was 7 weeks pregnant. And then I got some nerve damage (I think from the knots/lumps compressing some nerves). Nothing awful, just had numbness down both hips for a while then tingling then pain. Now it's kinda tender but almost 2 years later it's mostly back to normal.
But, it's worth it.
grapefruit / 4045 posts
@bloved: Thanks for those tips! I haven't talked with my RE nurse yet about any of this. I'm supposed to receive a call from her tomorrow to go over my schedule. I'm just on birth control now waiting for things to heat up! I'm going to save your tips in the notes on my phone because I want to be sure I can do all I can to avoid lumps. My sister went through IVF and the lumps she got in her back were enough to make me puke in my mouth when I had to give her a shot through the lumps. I can't even imagine how that would feel to be on the receiving end.
grapefruit / 4045 posts
@SweetiePie: Wow. You did them yourself also! You girls are so inspiring. I have trouble pushing the medicine out of the little follistim pen (the click click click is hard for me for some lame reason.) But you girls are really making me want to man up and just do this myself. Thanks for sharing your info. you are really being inspiring lately!

@YogiRunner: Thanks for a helpful idea to get my mind off this awful wait! I'm 13dpIUI and going a bit nuts, AF due Saturday but beta not til Monday since I had an ovidrel for implantation support. I also have a crappy AMH along with elevated prolactin and NK cells. Here are my TWW ideas:
1. agree with bad TV- I've been watching Big Brother, Mistresses, and DH and I just started Scandal.
2. play guitar
3. organize stuff
4. meditation
5. reading the Bible and praying

Getting caught up! Working backwards....
@YogiRunner: I don't know if I can list that many 2ww distractions... but here's a shot.
1. Orange is the New Black, Mad Men (again), House of Cards ... binge-watching style, one after the other,
2. Knitting, sweeping (not vacuuming, don't know why) ... super calming to do the same thing over and over.
3. Netflix documentaries.
4. Going somewhere, anywhere ... like out to eat, baseball game, a walk on the beach.
5. In extreme cases, avoid HB. (Don't like avoiding you all, but I know you won't take it personally.)

About meds and injections...
@jaguar: That is a beautiful spread of meds! Thanks for sharing. Having just talk with four pharmacies today (paying all OOP), I completely understand wanting to set it all out and take pictures once it arrives.
@agold: @jaguar: @SweetiePie: I will be giving myself the injections as well. I used to be totally freaked out at the idea of giving anyone shots, let alone myself. Fortunately or not, I had to learn how to give my dog monthly IM injections for arthritis and I once had to give him daily Lupron injections (the little subcutaneous ones that come with the kit) when he had prostatitis! I actually have some leftover Lupron in the fridge, but it's already expired.
That said, I have no idea how it will be to put the needle into me, but it will be what I have to do. DH will not do it ... has a fear of needles. I'm okay with it, as I'd rather have someone injecting me "with confidence" than being more nervous than I will be. DH will definitely be making up for it!
So, thanks for the tips. I've already started watching videos. However, since my "failed" trial transfer, I am more worried about the dreaded "tenaculum" than injections. Also I will be doing the P suppositories i/o PIO injections. I hope they are just as effective. My RE says they are. I would do the injections if they weren't, but I do hear they are "messy."

About drinking 100 oz before ET...
@SweetiePie: @jaguar: @YogiRunner: @bloved: @PurplePumps: @agold: Thanks for these perspectives. I'm surprised at the range (some told to drink until bursting, some a little and others just don't pee). I also read the thing about the bladder only holding so much which is why I thought 45 oz should do! Maybe I was partly dehydrated when I started drinking? Also...maybe not all of the water had made it to my bladder in time.
@bloved: I started drinking about 1.5 hours beforehand, but maybe I got distracted (was driving to my appointment -- 2 hours each way!) and the bulk of the water didn't get in me until 1 hour before.
Who knows really, but I did hear the RE say "posterior" and "inverted," but when I asked her if that was making it difficult, the answer was no. I simply hadn't drank enough! Argh.
It's true, I was not absolutely bursting, so @jaguar, I know what to aim for now. Like I said, ET is the most worrisome thing to me right now. On a positive note, however, I will be able to have acupuncture before and after transfer right in my clinic ... just set that up today.
persimmon / 1132 posts
@PurplePumps: thinking about you. Hard any way you slice it right now. Big hugs.
pomegranate / 3764 posts
@Amorini: I know what you mean - I'm always anxious about transfers. (Have I drunk enough? What if I pee the embryo out because I'm BURSTING afterwards?)
@AmeliaBedilia: So hoping you get a gorgeous surprise in a few days time.
@agold: I actually really HATE that clicking sound of the Puregon (same as Follistim) too! Thought it was just me.
@bloved: & @SweetiePie: You guys are amazing giving the IM shots yourself. That's one thing I've never had to do. Hundreds and hundreds of the easy jabs, but never a bum shot! x

Cross post:
Looks like AF is coming a day early, despite a higher dose of femara, an ovidrel booster, cabergoline, and a great progesterone. WTF? I called RE who said we might add an ultrasound Monday to my beta, and that spotting might be implantation bleeding. Who has implantation bleeding 14DPO? Everything went well this cycle and still no BFP and the cabergoline is making me miserable. I want to give up.
persimmon / 1114 posts
@AmeliaBedilia: I am so sorry! I Know how discouraging it gets when everything lines up perfectly and then still...nothing. It makes it an even crueler twist of the knife. However, I think spotting can happen any time in early pregnancy, so I don't think you are completely out. Do you think taking a test would make you feel better?
grapefruit / 4045 posts
@jaguar: I'm totally with you on hating the clicking sound. I'd rather just have a smooth trigger injection thingy. The clicking causes some resistance actually (at least I think it does).
@AmeliaBedilia: With both of the IUIs I did, my period came days earlier than expected. I, too, was on progesterone pills. And I, too, had a seemingly perfect set up. I was given no explanation. That is one of the few reasons I decided to not even try a third IUI. But don't give up, doll. Keep going. I'm starting IVF and quite excited about it. (Except paying for it. Ugh. But I try to keep that a separate thought.)
