IVF Thread #4

I realized tonight that I forgot to come back after last month's cancelled cycle! I started my cycle a week ago (7/18) and my baseline was the next day. The hemorrhagic cyst that was on my left ovary is still there but about half the size as it was last month. The nurse was optimistic that they would ignore it and let me continue with this cycle and thankfully they have!

Today was day 6 of stimming and I had an US this morning to see what's happening, I have 23 < 10mm (15 on my L and 8 on my R) and 6 10-13mm (3 on each) so things are coming along nicely so far!

Thankfully my cycle started when it did because otherwise hubs would be in a different state when I have my retrieval (if this cycle is like my last, my ER will probably be on Wed) because he's going out of town for a business trip the entire first week of August!

@yellowbeach: Feeling pretty good so far! Tired but that has more to do with me staying up way too late at night than stimming

I’m glad to hear your retrieval went well!!

I have a tentative transfer date tomorrow at 3:30p if our embryos look like they won’t make it to Day 5. We’ve only ever transferred on Day 5 before, so this threw me for a bit of a loop. I can’t even remember why they decide to do Day 3 transfers vs 5 now. (It was last discussed back in 2016 at our first retrieval but I didn’t think to ask yesterday). I know 5 is ideal, but can anyone refresh my memory of why they do Day 3 sometimes?

  15. LAZB

    pomegranate / 3904 posts

@yellowbeach: are they concerned with the progress so far? Or is that just a general plan that they make with patients?

  16. yellowbeach

    nectarine / 2648 posts

@LAZB: I think it’s a general plan in case thinks aren’t going as ideally as they like. I had forgotten about this bc we have always done PGS testing (Day 5) so we weren’t doing fresh transfers and a Day 3 wasn’t an option. Hopefully they will call in the morning and tell me we can go to Day 5. But was trying to mentally prepare about how bad it was if we do need to do a day 3.

@yellowbeach: I will do! Had and US yesterday and bloodwork today (kinda annoying to drive 1.5 hours total for a blood draw but that’s beside the point). I have another US in the morning and unless something changes, I’ll be triggering tomorrow night and do the retrieval on Wednesday!

@yellowbeach: I read a few studies on 3 vs 5 just because you asked and they seem to have similar results of pregnancy, but 3 days had a 20% higher propensity towards splitting for twins.

Admittedly I get a little lost after the abstract and first page or so. 🤞 You get your 🌈 whether it's a 3 or 5 day.

@yellowbeach: lurking on this thread and wanted to chime in about 3 day transfers. With DS1 we did a 3 day transfer which was, obviously, successful. I recall we had 9 retrieved, 5 fertilized and ended up with 2 great quality embryos, one average. We transferred 2 and ended up with DS1. I believe in our case it was because we only really had 3 that were doing well (2 had arrested) so they make that call to do the transfer just in case. Maybe if we had higher numbers they would have chanced it another day or so. Our stimulation protocols with both our IVF’s were very conservative so we didn’t have high numbers retrieved. It’s also standard protocol to offer both at our clinic so it was explained throughly to us before treatment that it was a possibility.

Weirdly enough, with our second successful cycle with DS2 we had almost identical numbers but we did a day 5 transfer and had one transferred and one frozen. The leftover one from DS1 was not frozen as it also arrested.

I remember with DS1 I was stressssssed when we got the call to do a 3 day and it felt like a race to get them transferred in case they stopped developing and we ended up with nothing. I remember sitting in the office in our scrubs almost having a panic attack waiting for the RE to give us the report before we did the transfer, but it ended up being good news. I think it’s great that they can do a 3 or a 5 and then those embies can get back to where they need to be and grow grow grow! All the luck to you

@SamsMom @muffinsmuffins: Thanks for the insight. I try to run through all these scenarios in my head before the dreaded phone calls that could be amazing or dreadful news. Gives me some slight (false) feeling of control. 😬

@Sams Mom: funny, I’ve read the opposite that frozen 5 days are more likely to split lol.

Man my clinic is killing me with the waiting.. just got a portal message that said they don't have the report yet, but that my RE had looked at the embryos and definitely wants to go for a Day 5 transfer. So we are scheduled for a fresh transfer of a yet TBD # of embryos on Wednesday. I'd like to think this is good news, but cautiously optimistic.

You guys... they just messaged me my embryo report... I'm a little confused bc it's different than the format they usually give me, but I think it's good - like really good.

    ☯️One 10 cell grade I
    ☯️One 10 cell grade II
    ☯️One 9 cell grade I

@yellowbeach: Ugh the back and forth and 3 vs. 5 day definitely seems anxiety-inducing but you are soooo close to transfer day. Maybe just try to focus on that and how exciting that is??? I'm excited for you!

So not triggering today, I have a bunch of follicles at around 14 so we are going to see if we can get those to catch up. So I will trigger tomorrow for a Thursday retrieval (I like this better, then I can just make it a long weekend off work). I lost count of the follicles but there were at least 10 that were 13mm or bigger on each side.

  31. yellowbeach

    nectarine / 2648 posts

@Marfi: that happened to me on retrieval 2. Had a lead follicle that we ended up just ignoring and losing to save all the others that were smaller in size behind it.

@Mrs. Pajamas: just got here - relaxed but nervous - not sure how that’s even possible. Awaiting a report on our day 5 embryos and to learn how many our doctor will recommend transferring. I’m here solo for the first time (I think) so helps to know my bees 🐝 are thinking of me 💛🌈

Ended up transferring 2! Our 10 dropped to 8, so we transferred these two blasts and are letting the 6 others grow out to Day 6 to see if they can be hearty blasts. Now the waiting!

Hoping this will be your lucky transfer! Double rainbows 🌈🌈 are rare in nature but are exquisite to behold ... double rainbow babies would be even more spectacular!

@Kaohinani: we didn’t do the genetic testing this time, so we don’t know the sex. We’ll have to wait until the NIPT like most everyone else!
