I imagine being in an abusive relationship for so long he has her brain washed - I read that she apologized for causing the 1st incident...???

He got what he deserved and should serve jail time for abusing her as well!

I know this will not be a common opinion and is really just something to think about. Please understand that I do not condone this behavior at all. But, what do you think would happen to your spouse and his career in the same situation? I get that he is a professional athlete and in the public eye. I get that abuse is wrong, but his career is gone. Would your spouse's career be impacted?

@MamaG: Hell yeah my husband's career would be impacted. He would be fired and would never be able to be a police officer for any other agency again. Felony actions destroy MOST people's careers.

@MamaG: yeah. DH's would be gone for sure and he's not jn the public eye.

I think it's disgusting that the NFL saw the video in it's entirety prior to the suspension, but didn't suspend him indefinitely until the media and general public saw it.

@MamaG: If my husband were caught on camera beating the crap out of me then I fully believe he would be fired. But I also do agree with others that if you have a job that puts you out in front of millions of people as a public representative of your organization, you should have some higher general expectations. But in this particular situation, I do think most people would lose their jobs.

I'm getting tired of having to explain victim-blaming and the cycle of abuse to people. "But she married him!" Um, that doesn't make what happened okay! The NFL is now, months later, covering its collective ass by suspending him, only based on public outcry with the release of the video.

@MamaG: My husband isn't a public figure so his career wouldn't be impacted. I think there are a lot of public figures who do horrible things who still have their careers. Do I think he needs to lose his career over this? No. Do I think he should've had had a harsher punishment? Yes, from the "justice" system. He got into a special 12-month program and after he completes it his charges are going to be dismissed. WTF?

TMZ Sports is reporting that the NFL never requested the video from the casino: "Sources who worked at the casino at the time of the incident tell us ... if the NFL had asked for the video, they would have gladly complied. Former employees have told us someone with an affiliation to the NFL saw the video, but we are now certain that someone was not from Goodell's office or the core NFL executives."

Here's who had a copy:

"Multiple sources tell TMZ Sports ... the casino made a copy of the elevator surveillance video for police. We're also told Rice's lawyer had a copy of the video, which he got in the criminal case. ... An NFL source tells us they requested "any and all information" from law enforcement in the criminal case but got nothing because it was a pending case. But the NFL had other options ... namely going to the casino or Rice's lawyer -- but the NFL never bothered to ask."

The Ravens have been claiming that nobody from the organization ever saw the video before now. Apparently someone from the NFL saw the video, but it wasn't someone senior? Not sure how that ball got dropped.

But Josh Gordon was suspended from the Browns for a year for testing positive for marijuana. WTF, NFL? I see what you're about ...

I also love how the Ravens tweeted an apology from her for her "involvement" when this all came out. The tweet has since been deleted. She owes no one an apology for being victimized.

@MamaG: most companies have a code of ethics, which the employee agrees to when signing their contract. I would be interested to read an NFL contract, but I'm guessing it states there are penalties for domestic violence, drug use, arrests, etc.

I've been really offended by the comments on social media saying that Janay "still married this piece of shit". It takes a victim many attempts to leave the abuser, and some never leave. It is never the victims fault.

@MamaG: my husband would likely lose his job if he served time in jail. Unless an arrest was made public and known I doubt he would lose his current job. He would probably have a hard time finding another one in his same field.

The Associated Press has audio of the elevator. Rice is shown spitting on his wife in the hallway and apparently she spits on him inside the elevator.

I can see why the wife is so upset. NFL contracts are lucrative and the couple moved on.

It's so sad to watch the video And I feel so bad for her! I don't know how she is expected to deal w/ the abuse, all the media attention & public opinion. I totally understand that for an abused victim, it's not that easy to walk away or to even see it as abuse.

I just hope he's not getting even more angry & taking it out on her in private! I guess he can't be charged if she's not pressing charges? I'm not sure how all that works.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Not that it matters, but no one seems to be talking about the fact that it looks like he spit on her when she walked past him to get into the elevator--just that she spit on him inside the elevator.

@lizzywiz: I can see why she'd be upset at him losing his job and all of the media speculation, reports, and opinions. I can't help but feel sad for her but this incident is now beyond just her and him. It's about the entire league and their policies on DV and sexual assault, cover ups, etc.

@MrsSCB: you know what? I had a friend in a DV situation. Primarily emotional/financial but some physical abuse, too. You know, the kind of guy who would flip out and then lock himself in the bathroom saying he would kill himself if she left/called the cops/ etc. A real charmer.
I did the whole roller coaster with her- emergency pick ups, gave her a place to stay, helped find and get her to a counselor, helped her change locks at one point. And she always went back. I don't blame her but at some point, I guess it was about 7 years into it, I started distancing myself. I honestly, until this thread, felt I had done what I could to help someone who was not yet ready to leave.
But you know what I never did? I never called the cops. I never witnessed actual abuse but I definitely saw the after affects and it never once occurred to me to call the cops. I told her to call but I never called for her. You have given me something to think about.

@MamaG: I agree with everyone who says that most people would lose their jobs if convicted of a felony like this one....and excuse me if this has already been said...but the NFL has an image to protect and they are totally within their rights to fire someone if that person does not represent their organization in the way they expect it to be represented. Especially with all the press concerning traumatic brain injury that leads to violent behavior. It just makes sense for the NFL to do it (personally I think it should have been done earlier).
