What do SAHM's do when we get jury duty? Is that an excuse to get off or are we forced to find a babysitter?
I don't have jury duty.... DH did and I'm just wondering what's going to happen if I do get it some day.

Ah, this is one I can answer. In NYC, I called and they said to circle to medical reason and write that I am a stay-at-home mom and mail it in. (I mailed it in with a copy of her birth certificate—she was 3 or so weeks old.)

@knittingmama: Would that only work with a newborn then?

Not sure, but it seemed like if you are a primary caregiver, whether for a child or an elderly person, you are excused.

I actually got a letter from the county a few weeks ago to have me fill out a form about jury duty. I ticked "nursing mother." Done. I would love to sit on another jury one of these days when I have absolutely nothing to do and no kids to watch. It was such a great experience for me the first time I did it many years back when I lived in CA.

They used to let you off for that, then I heard they stopped allowing it. I haven't heard anything recently. If it happened, I'm guessing it wouldn't hurt to bring a crying baby with you-- they'd send you right home

@erwoo: I'm not a nursing mother. But I am the mother of a child who has some major stranger anxiety.... makes it awfully hard to leave her with a babysitter.
@Foodnerd81: Lol. I doubt I'll get called any time soon anyway. Just curious to know what would happen if I did.

@artbee: Yeah, I can see how hard that would be. :\ Hopefully you won't get called anytime soon.

In Texas, if you're the primary caretaker for a child/ill adult, then you fill in that bubble, and you're excused from jury duty.

I was on maternity leave with my first baby and got summoned. I had no family/help around or daycare options at that point so I went to the courthouse with my then 5-month old and explained my situation. My jury duty got postponed 1 year.
I ended up serving jury duty about a year and a half later when I was back to work and DD was in daycare. It was a great experience... I agree with @erwoo. Can't wait to get called again, haha!
