If you had $10,000 and had to use it, no paying off debt, and no saving, what would you do?
I would buy a few more pieces of furniture and some artwork to try to finish the apartment.

Probably towards a car since I think I'd get another $10k trade in on mine!
ORRR towards a new house
GOLD / wonderful grape / 20289 posts
We'd probably use it on the house. DH has all sorts of projects he wants to do here.

Use it for the major yard work we have to do next spring. And if anything is left, new furniture for the living room.

It'd go to our house renos... our agreement with my mom & grandmother (who bought the house) is they'll sell it to us for 55k BUT any money we put into the renovations will come off the purchase price SO that's be awesome to suddenly get 10k we could put into the house (get a good chunk of it done too) and then have our 4 bedroom 2 bath house for 45k. tehe

So you CAN'T save it? I'd plan an awesome vacation, but we couldn't do it for several months since baby will be here any day. Maybe a big Christmas trip to see DH's family and we could splurge and rent a great house someplace nice.

@Foodnerd81: right, no saving. This is hypothetical fun money:-)
nectarine / 2690 posts
I'd buy a new couch first. New clothes for both DH and I second. And third, go on vacation!
papaya / 10473 posts
I'd finish our bonus room upstairs and vacation with the rest! We are moving our office/music room upstairs when it's done, so it would be nice to have 10k

First I thought student loans. Then I thought save for the next house. But since no debt payoff, and no saving....
VACATION!!!! I would go try to get me and DH to Europe.
nectarine / 2134 posts
@lamariniere: Well if it's FUN money (no savings or student loans)...then I'd take a trip to Vietnman or Croatia. And buy DH that new TV he's been eyeing! Much more fun

Long weekend vacation. Art & accessories to finish off the house.
nectarine / 2932 posts
Hm. I'd spend half on a great vacation, and the other half on home improvements. (maybe a teensy bit for clothes ;))

This is SO unlike me to say this but I'm going through a phase of hating all of my clothes and it's really affecting my confidence. I would hire a personal shopper and get her to help me select a whole new wardrobe.
grapefruit / 4671 posts
Half of it would go on a trip to SE Asia, the rest would go on some new furniture. I have my eye on Crate and Barrel's Colette bed.
GOLD / eggplant / 11517 posts
I'd spend it on each of these things:
1. Re-populate my wardrobe that got decimated by a few years of weight fluctuations and a pregnancy. Also do the same for DH.
2. Take a stateside vacation in the fall (we cancelled it so we could put more money towards debt...but we'd put it back on the calendar if we got an influx of rando' cash like this!)
3. Stock up on toys and clothes for LO for when she is more advanced/bigger.
4. Finish decorating our house.
5. DH and I will make $500 donations to our favorite charity.
6. With the rest I'd buy a Costco membership and stock up on things with no expiration date (Paper towels, toilet paper, dish soap, canned goods, etc. so we don't have to think about it or buy it for a very long time)

Well since I'm 8.5 month preggo - travel would be out.
I'd spend it the following ways:
-$3500 yard work (fix paver patio, landscape the front yard)
-$2500 reno work ($1250 to fix up the basement, $1250 to finish the work on the first floor)
-$2000 to furnish the family room (so we could move that old sectional to the newly finished basement)
-$2000 to finish furnishing the master bedroom
All housework!!! haha...the pride of home-ownership.
If I wasn't preggo - I'd say we'd spend $3K on a european getaway (I got there enough for work that we'd only need to cover DH's flight and some hotels) and then $7K on the house...probably cut the master bedroom furniture and some of the first floor work!
If I was still single with no commitments...I'd buy myself the LV purse, Christian Louboutin's and burberry trench I have been oogling for years (total of $3500) and probably whisk a friend and I off to Ireland or Greece for a week vacation!

We would buy a dining table and go on a trip! I would love to go to Spain or Japan.

@lamariniere: We really need a new couch! Just for fun I played pretend on overstock.com right now and it was hard to try to spend $10,000! I could get a new couch, a bedroom set, new mattress, comforter, sheets, shower curtains, towels, a few area rugs, etc. Basically brand new stuff for the whole apartment, and it still only came to $5, 372! I'd use the rest for a down payment on a car I suppose!

@Mrs D: I like your "single no commitments part". Excellent ideas.
cantaloupe / 6669 posts
I was going to say pay off debt, but since that's not allowed, we'd use it toward buying a house! Though what I would REALLY love to do is go on an amazing vacation.

Ooh. If it's fun money, I'd fix up my classic car with it. Or else go on an awesome trip!
GOLD / wonderful olive / 19030 posts
1. Carpet
2. Tile/New Counter Tops in bathroom & kitchen
And that would probably due it...leftovers would be new clothings for me!
kiwi / 691 posts
I would get an air conditioner installed in our house, and have a nice vacation!
pear / 1693 posts
I'd buy art to finish the house, the rest of the backpacking gear we'd like, and go on a 3-4 week road trip/camping vacation through the Southwest with DH.
persimmon / 1388 posts
Herm. If paying off debt isn't an option (in my head, downpayment for a house is saving/paying off debt so I'll exclude that was well)...I'll say...a really nice vaca! We never really went on a *real* honeymoon anywhere so that would be nice! Somewhere beachy and warm
papaya / 10570 posts
Its a tie up between the loft conversion and a complete garden makeover!
cantaloupe / 6017 posts
Practical: put it toward a new (used) car
Extravagant: ski trip in Banff for husband's winter vacation
eggplant / 11824 posts
ooooh, fun money:
1 week to San Francisco and Napa valley, see friends and lots of wineries
1 week in Spain
long weekend to Washington, DC

I'm going to expand my kitchen! But DH would want to change the windows. I'm a push over and will probably give in. But it definitely wouldn't be enough to complete either project.
pineapple / 12566 posts
@Crumbs: do you have a tiny European oven too? Mine is like a shoebox. I practically burn my knuckles every time I take something out of it! I need to add a giant oven to my wish list...which would then have to include kitchen renovations to allow it to fit.
