I don't remember having anything like that before IVF so I can't relate. I just had the standard thyroid and other blood tests (can't remember now what they are) but not those. Wow, that sure is pricey! Can you just call your insurance just to be sure there wasn't a mistake? Even though you don't have infertility coverage, maybe they do cover those tests if a different diagnostic code is used? It is worth a call!!

With my old insurance/RE office I had to pay 50% for all my infertility stuff. Blood work definitely added up. I think it was $140 each time to check my estrogen levels and that was done 2-3 times a cycles for 6 cycles...

You should definitely talk to your clinic (was it done at your clinic?) and negotiate down the rate because they probably billed you at the rate they charge an insurance company, which tends to be much higher.

I don't know if this helps this time around, but you can try to see if your regular OB/GYN might get into an agreement with your RE to order some tests on their behalf so that it can be billed through insurance. A lot of those tests are pretty standard from a regular OB/GYN's office and insurance doesn't question it. If they see its from an RE's office, they will just reject it. Then they release the results to the RE. In my town, the RE places seem to do this fairly often.

Ugh I'm sorry. I paid 700-800$ for a repeat loss panel with my old insurance. That was all bloodwork but it did have a genetic test which costs more. Unfortunately while it ruled a few things out it told us nothing of use.

We're about to lose if coverage and I'm praying my new re won't make me redo all the testing I had done in October. I can't imagine what that would cost out of pocket and not even to treatments yet.

@bluestriped bee: I agree with what gingerbee said - if you need any additional bloodwork see if you can do it through your OB. I did that and it was all covered even though I don't have IF coverage. Things like HIV and an STD panel should be covered.

Oh shit. That's an expensive bill! It seems like that could have been done at your general doctor's office and have been covered by your insurance. I HATE to pay for medical things. So sorry lady.

Ugh. Yeah, I don't think that's too unusual for all that. I think all the pre-screening for IVF runs in the $500-$2000 range. Too bad they couldn't have coded it differently for crying out loud!

Unfortunately, that sounds about right. I was shocked that blood work was one of the most expensive tests I had to do prior to starting IVF. I got a $3000 bill for a full preconception work up that included CF testing since DH is a carrier. We had to resubmit extra paperwork to insurance, but they did cover it. I've heard of some people going through their GP or regular OB for blood work just so that insurance doesn't categorize it as infertility. Maybe you could try that next time if you have to do more lab work.

@bluestriped bee: as you can see they only paid $98.44.......lol iM sorry but that is insane.....we went to quest not the RE because my insurance said we would have more coverage.....lol...wow a whooping $94.88.........

I thought when we paid the co pay that was it...apparently I was wrong, I am glad though between me and DH all the other tests we did it would equal 3,000 so I guess 799 is not too bad

@bluestriped bee: it is soooo crazy........we tried so hard to meet the 10% and we did but the rest was not enough of a huge write off ...I am glad you got a diagnosis this time, it makes it worth it!!!!! I have not called insurance but I should!!!!

@bluestriped bee: ohhhh my yes well you did get a diagnosis any money is worth that, but that is a hefty bill for blood!
