Can anyone recommend a good knife set. I need new knives but I dont know which brand to get, I dont want to spend too much either. What knife set do you use and would you recommend it?

We got this set for our wedding a year ago: http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/regProduct.asp?WRN=-951787290&sku=16752665&
And it has worked out very well for us! We do use different steak knives, but otherwise the big ones work very well!

We have a set made by J.A. Henckels that I love. It also has steak knives with it. It's not super cheap or super expensive. Middle of the road.

I have a big block set from BBB that I got from my registry, but you really only need a few. If you are looking for a la carte, I highly recommend this one for the value: http://www.amazon.com/Victorinox-40520-Fibrox-8-Inch-Chefs/dp/B000638D32 I read a full review in Cook's Illustrated where they tested a bunch of knives under $100 and this one came out on top, for under $30. I have had it for about 7 years and it's still great.
Our block set is from Zwilling J A Henckels and I'm very happy with them. I had one break, a total fluke thing, and they replaced it with a brand new one.

We got this one from our registry. http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/Product.asp?WRN=-951787290&SKU=14710264& We love it. I have used all of the knives from the set over the last 18 months we've had it.

We use Cutco knives and absolutely LOVE them. But they’re pretty expensive =/

We have (and love) Global knives. They are not cheap, but not too crazy pricey either.

I'm with running elley...cutco! There are truly no better knives out there. I think you can try a set for a little while and if you don't like, just give them back to the company.

everyone has mentioned great knives! we have wusthof, which i like, and my sister has santoku which i really like.
as an alternative to a whole knife set, some people buy individual knives that they use the most instead of the whole set to save money (unless, of course, you know you would use all the knives in the set!). most people just need a chef's knife, paring knife, and bread knife.
before buying my last knife, i went to williams sonoma and bloomie's to try them out to see which ones i liked holding better. some knives are much heavier than others, and some have more of a cylindrical handle as opposed to a squared off one which could all affect comfort.

@lydg: Oh that’s true! They have a fabulous return policy/warrantee.
OP, they do have some smaller sets as well that have the basics….something like this one that has the paring knife, chef knife, carving knives and spreader. Those are the ones that I use the most anyway. http://www.cutco.com/products/product.jsp?itemGroup=1845C
