For those of you that use one, how much do you pay? Is it by SF price? How often do they come?
I'm trying to call around and see if it's feasible to budget for this for the summer. DH has been doing this but with our yard (3/4) acres, it takes him 2-3 hours on a weekend between trimming and mowing. And we're always the unkept house since we both work full time and the weather doesn't always cooperate to mow on the weekends/nights.

We don't use one because the quote we got was for $75/week and they would do it weekly. I'm assuming it would be more if they came less often, though maybe not double. And our lawn is a lot smaller than yours - maybe about 1/4 acre.

What if you approached it the other way, and said here's an amount I want to spend per month, what can you do for this?
Is there anyone else that uses a service in your 'hood? If so, I'd call them first, since they're in the area and maybe they'll do yours at the same time and they can cut you a small discount for not having to drive across town or whatever.

Ours was $40/week and we live on .22/acre. It was so worth it. They use the large commercial mowers and it took them maybe 10 minutes to cut our yard. It takes my husband about two hours with breaks. We are doing it again this summer and I might budget it for next year too. Our yard has never looked better.

@regberadaisy: We have a lot of flower beds that require maintenance, so that's probably part of the cost since they would do pruning and weeding as well as mowing.

every company i have seen bases it on sqft here, so I didn't bother shopping around, I just kept the guys that do other houses on our street. You may be able to negotiate a lower price that way, since they are already in the area!

@Adira: hm okay. Yeah we just want someone to mow the lawn and trim. That's it!
@looch: yeah, my next door neighbor actually uses someone. So I'm planning to ask them. The awkward part is another neighbor two doors down has a lawn service. He does almost everyone's lawn! My next door neighbor said they don't use him because he's pricey. LOL

We pay 80 a month for 2 times a month. Our yard is a lot smaller than yours though.

Our lot is .57 acres, but obviously not all of that is yard. We have a large front yard, 2 skinny side yards and a small back yard and pay $30 per mow, and they come usually every 2 weeks, sometimes itโs every week depending on grass growth.
Itโs not really mowable without a riding lawnmower. It would take HOURS to do with a non-riding mower so once I figured out how much those puppies cost, game over.

@regberadaisy: We live on a cul-de-sac and over half the houses use the same person for the lawns - he's the one that gave us the $75/week quote, but he's definitely more expensive than other places. We now use someone else for our landscaping work (though we still don't do weekly mowing).

I got referred by a friend/neighbor; it's not an official company and it's just a couple guys so we paid $25 a week and we have a fairly large backyard with a hilly front yard. Cleanup was like $120 or something like that (we usually give him $150 since he does a lot of extra things for us).
I know other people that use legit companies def pay almost double what we pay. I mean yeah, sometimes I can't get in touch with him and everything is not very "official" but I loved saving money.
Unfortunately DH is back to doing it himself again this summer since $ is tight!

We have 1.5 acres outside of Boston. The first year we were here we had a lawn service so we didn't have to buy a mower right away. It was $50/week or $75/biweekly.

$70 week for weekly cutting. We have almost an acre. If we need any pruning or wedding or other services, we let him know and the charge is $40/hour.
My husband works weekends sometimes and we are away a lot. It would take at least 2 hours for him to do the yard on the weekend and I'm pregnant and am not going to be mowing this year. Plus we don't have a mower so won't buy one for now.

@regberadaisy: Our yard is a similar size and when we first moved in we were quoted $40 a week which I think is reasonable. My husband wanted to do it himself and found a good used riding mower quickly so we never had it done. It is so time consuming though, he works 50-60 hours a week these days, it's going to be hard on him even though he likes taking care of the yard.

We asked our neighbors via the Nextdoor app for recommendations and called for estimates. We live CA with not too much yard to mow, but we have lots of trees and rosebushes and what not that need trimming and upkeep. The guy charges about $85 a month and comes weekly, but we keep him on payroll year-round, including the winter when it rains. Its like 110 degrees here in the summer, so that's just brutal for what he charges us. Plus I figure he needs the work rain or shine, so we just have him do some odd jobs like pruning, cleaning the gutters, maintaining our sprinkler system, and pulling old plants and putting in new ones for us.

We live in a community where most people use the same company. We don't have a lot of grass (the back yard is shaded and either only grows moss or is covered in patio) so they only charge $20 a mow (but they also run a leaf blower to clean up debris in the backyard if we leave it accessible).
I wouldn't want a service that charges per week. Sometimes you need it more than once a week, and if there's a drought you need it less. But our neighborhood is pretty happy with the folks we use.

Ours mows once per week and does weeding, pruning, trimming, fertilizer, watering, etc. they said it would be the same price to come every other week because the lawn would take longer to mow. Our lawn grows so fast that I think there will still be times that we will need to mow midweek. We use the same company that our HoA is contracted with and for that reason they gave us a discount. They are coming April through November. It's $20 for mowing and $20 for all the rest per week.

Central Texas and we pay by the 1/4 acre. Ours is .70 acres and we pay around $60-70!

We pay $90/ mo for four cuts in the summer and 2-3 in the winter. They trim trees and shrubs as needed. When they trim our privacy hedge that's an extra charge, but that only happens every 2-3 months. We live on a 10-11,000 sq ft lot, but some of that is taken up by house & pool.
