when applying for admission to your state bar, who did you get to give you two character affidavits? I havent gotten my results yet but they want us to start filling out the forms in advance. The instructions say I cant use anyone i work with or have worked with because they are already providing employment affidavits.. Who did you use?

I was admitted almost 10 years ago so things are different bc I was able to use partners from the firm I was working at...they didn't have separate employment and personal reference affidavits as far as I can remember. I have provided affidavits to family friends applying for their license. If I had to provide separate affidavits back then I guess I would have asked classmates a year or two older who already were practicing (assuming your character affidavits have to from licenses attorneys)...or a professor

@sandy: thanks yeah I cant use anyone from my law school either or family. They say they prefer for one of the character affidavit to be from a lawyer. but it doesnt have to be. I think I may ask my pastor from church to do one

Man. I did this just 5 years ago and I have no idea! Probably just friends of mine. I mean honestly, the bar people are not in the business of not allowing people to take the bar. Try not to stress too much about it. Unless you do something crazy-- you're going to get through just fine

I'm trying to remember, as i did my coop application at the same time and needed a zillion references for that too! I think I used my best friend who had been my roommate for many years and a family friend of my parents who has known me my whole life.

Gosh, I don't even remember. I don't think we had that many restrictions on who we could use, though. I'm guessing I used one of my good friends from college as one reference and possibly a law school prof as another, but I'd have to go back to my copies of the applications to see who I actually put down. I think we did this as part of our initial application procedures, though, so it was months before we actually took the exam. To the best of my memory, neither of my state bars had any paperwork to do once you actually took the exam except signing the oath card after you passed.

Are you in NY? I remember hearing my friends and classmates who were taking the NY bar complain about how crazy the C&F process was there. I don't think things have changed all that much in the states I'm licensed in, as I was only admitted in 2010 -- I think it really is state-dependent.

@PurplePeony: yes I am applying to the NY bar and yeah I have also heard NY has a bit more of a longer process than some states. I think NY and CA are supposed to be the worst ones in terms of the exam itself and the whole process

Depends on the state. In NY, I used a friend and a law professor. I wouldn't stress about.

@Mrsbells: yea i did NY and CT, and CT i had all my paperwork in before i even took the bar, so once i passed i was just admitted immediately, but NY you can't even start the process until you pass, which is a pain! But i got the results in November and was admitted in February, so it didn't take THAT long I guess.

I think I put one of my friends who is a police officer (wanted to show that a cop thinks I am law abiding!) and a few other of my friends with good jobs. I don't think that I put a law professor....but I really can't remember.

Oh gosh... I was admitted in 2007 and I do not even remember doing this. But I would follow @justdarling: 's advice and choose two people with fairly significant careers if you are able to do so. I imagine I used family friends who are lawyers if I would have had to do something like this.

I know I used a law professor I was close with and probably did a close friend too for the moral character application here in California.
Don't stress--you'll be fine!
