Am I doing this right?
Skip NB sizes and go to straight 0-3 months? or is it straight to 3-6 months?

How come you want to skip nb size? 3-6 months would be much too big for a newborn

@Autumnmama79: The AAP book said so, and I think that's been said on here- that babes grow out of NB sizes so fast.

eh, i had average babies and still needed NB sizes, 3-4 weeks with the first and 6 weeks with the second! i definitely think they're good to have on hand!

They do grow out of Nb quick but I would have a few Nb to be safe. Both my babies were average sized and wore NB the first week or two. I remember running to target after our first ped visit to be more NB sleepers! My girls were tall too!

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I guess it all depends on how big baby is at birth and how quickly they grow, which is hard to predict. Dd wore nb sizes for a good 4 weeks and sizes vary amongst brands meaning some 0-3 month clothes were pretty big.

Other question...will babies scrape themselves in onesies if their legs are left bare?
I ask because I don't really like the onesie and pants look. Babylist suggests 7 onesies or 7 rompers. So, will it be redundant (and even necessary) to get the onesies?

I followed the advice to have almost no newborn clothes and I really regretted it. I had a few newborn sleepers and onesies, and DS (8lbs5oz / 21in at birth) was in newborn clothes for the first 3-4 weeks. I had to send my husband out for more sleepers and order some stuff from Prime. For the next kid I will definitely buy some more newborn stuff ahead of time!

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: baby probably won't be able to reach his/her legs to scratch but many babies scratch their faces. We used the little nb scratch mittens to prevent this.
wonderful pea / 17279 posts
@Autumnmama79: I'm getting these mittens, maybe two pairs. They have velcro to stay on. The 0-3 mos rompers I picked up have the built in mitten fold.
I'd love to find NB kimono style rompers...any recomendations? L'ovedbaby seems to have just onesies in the style. I figure the NB stage is when I'd really want to make sure the baby's legs are covered for warmth.

I bought mostly 0-3 month on the advice of many baby books. They were much too big on my average size baby (7.5 lbs). She was in NB for at least 3-4 weeks.
I would buy at least a few NB onesies / sleepers. Maybe keep the tags on most so if you don't need them you can return them, but it was annoying having to scramble to buy clothes on the second day home.
GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts
In NB and 0-3m size you can find long sleeve onesies that have sleeves that fold over so they don't scratch themselves. Honestly, the first few months, sleepers / sleep n plays are the easiest!!!

I had big babies 8+ lbs and they still wore nb for a few weeks!
wonderful cherry / 21504 posts
When is the baby due? With my summer baby she mostly wore onesies and was swaddled, no pants, or footed sleepers. My winter baby has worn almost exclusively sleepers. Onesies are too much work right now.
For sizing j think you will want a handful of NB things. G was over 8 lbs at birth and will be 4 weeks on Thursday, and she is between NB and the smaller sized 0-3 clothes (huge range even within the size, from Carter's at least).
One trick- Gerber runs pretty small so 0-3 size in Gerber was a good in between NB and regular 0-3.

@Foodnerd81: mid-April, but it'll be hot here no matter what!

They grow out of newborn fast, but it's still nice to have. My kiddo was 7 lb 15 oz and super long at 21 inches, but still wore newborn til 6 weeks. I think I started using some 0-3 at 3 weeks, and it was still big.
Pants aren't necessary for a while. My baby didn't wear much other than onesies for the first month. After that, the weather was getting cooler, so I started putting her in pants more. She didn't start reaching for her own legs until about 4 months.
Also, heads up, not all babies will tolerate scratch mittens. My baby flipped out if she had anything on her hands or if she couldn't have them right at her cheeks.

I have big babies- this one is 8lbs 10oz and very long and he is still wearing nb sizes. My LO that was born in March (hot here) wore onesies with a swaddle most of the time.
wonderful pea / 17279 posts
@Autumnmama79: I love those...just have to convince DH to wear kimono gowns during the day. The other clothes there were definitely my style
So, I think I've done my initial purchase all wrong I bought 6 long rompers and 2 short rompers in 0-3 months size, or up to 13 lbs. The baby will live under A/C and spend purposely maybe 2 hours a day outside in the backyard or park, and then of course in & out of the car. Am I going to burn up my child say from May/ June to Aug?

DD was small enough that we actually ran out and bought a few preemie items. I would get at least a handful of newborn sized clothes because it's nice to have them in things that fit early on. Also, baby clothes are sized all over the place, so don't just rely on the number on the tag. I had three pants from carters that were all 3 months and we're all very different sizes in reality. I guess I'm just saying to take notice of how things look vs the size on the tag!
We didn't do pants early on because she was a spring/summer baby. No issues with scratching at all (and didn't bother with the mittens).

@Foodnerd81: @travellingbee: when you all say swaddled, do you mean an A&A blanket or Wombie/SwaddleMe?
persimmon / 1188 posts
My doctor made me think I was going to deliver a toddler so I bought all 0-3 months. In the end my little guy was 8 lb 10 oz almost 22 inches and I had to borrow newborn clothes from my sister for a few weeks. If I have another baby I would like to have more newborn things on hand!

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: the brand "magnificent baby" has kimono-style sleepers and rompers. they close with magnets which is pretty darn convenient! and really soft, too.

I made the mistake of listening to people tell me that I didn't need NB because they grow out of it so fast. Well... I had maybe 1 NB size and I went out and bought more when she was born as she was swimming in 0 - 3! They definitely did not go to waste.
Also, I wouldn't bulk up on everything. I had 1000 swaddles, sleep sacks, etc and turns out, my baby despised having her legs and arms contained. The last time she was swaddled was the last night in the hospital!

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I think those will be fine for inside... Even in the summer my guy sleeps in long sleeves and pants because of the ac.
I agree you will need newborn stuff though! We had about 7 nb sleepers and ended up buying a couple more. Didn't have many nb sizes outfits.
Where is that stuff you posted from? Super adorable!
wonderful pea / 17279 posts
@jape14: Ugh! I had some in my Diapers.com basket and removed them and now the ones I want in NB are getting sold out. I watched the video to see how they worked, but hadn't heard about it on here.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: ooooooo I love bonds. They are the best sleepers zippies whatever you call them I own. All of their zippies have the cuffs too on both legs and arms. The double zippers are the best for diaper changes!
Mine was an April baby and she lived in sleepers and it was hot pretty often here. babies get cold easily!! But those shortie sleepers you pictured are awesome. I hated pulling onesies over her head.
And I've found the bonds run big. If I could have just had my LO Live in bonds zippies all day I would have!
I'd still get a couple of newborn things. Inexpensive things in case you don't use them. My LO was 7 lbs 3 os and was in newborn for a month or 6 weeks. She was skinny
pear / 1586 posts
@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I've also seen them on Amazon and at my local Nordstrom Rack and TJ Maxx. (I love enabling shopping!)
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21628 posts
I would get a few newborn things. DD was full term but not quite 7 pounds and was swimming in her newborn clothes for a couple weeks. I didn't switch to 0-3 until she was 6 weeks old and could have waited another week or 2.
wonderful pea / 17279 posts
Ok, I'm back on Bonds picking up NB sizes...I have this thing that I like to buy in multiple quantities and right now Bonds is letting me do that!
coconut / 8430 posts
I regretted not having NB sized clothes and LO was an above average length baby. We went out to get some because she was swimming in the 0-3mo things. She wore NB for 4-5 weeks IIRC.
persimmon / 1436 posts
Both my daughters were over 9 pounds at birth and over 21 inches long (so 90th+ percentile) and still wore newborn sizes for 2-3 weeks. I definitely recommend zip up pajamas with built in cuffs. I really like knowing their hands and feet are warm. Babies get cold fast!
You can do onesies with baby leg warmers if you like that look better than pants. Pants are a pain in the ass with little floppy babies IMO.
wonderful cherry / 21504 posts
@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: swaddled both ways. Early on we did a&ha swaddles, then after a couple weeks moved on to the swaddle devices (swaddleme, miracle blanket, woombie.., tried them all). So right now with my almost four week old I swaddle her gently with a blanket during the day for naps or to calm her down, but do miracle blanket tight at night. She's in just her sleeper the rest of the time.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: general rule of thumb is baby needs one more layer than you do. So if you're wearing shorts and a t-shirt, I'd do light sleeves and pants. I probably wouldn't do shorts or short sleeves in AC. But I haven't had a summer baby yet.
DS was born on the medium to large side at 8.5 pounds and he wore NB for a little over a month. I didn't like 0-3 on him when he was too small because he looked like he was swimming in it. Plus I thought it seemed dangerous because the neck opening was so big. Like it could get caught somehow and be a strangulation hazard. It was probably crazy first time mom stuff, but idk.
Also keep in mind that they might go through multiple outfits a day. So even if you have say 6 outfits, that could only be 2-3 days worth of clothes. When you have a newborn 3 weeks feels like an eternity. Especially when you're doing laundry every other day to keep them in clean clothes.

@Autumnmama79: We had a big baby (8.8) and he wore newborn layette pieces for 4 weeks before switching to 3 month!
cantaloupe / 6634 posts
@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: chances are, you will be gifted many newborn outfits, keep a few and return the rest. DS was 9 lbs 9 oz and still wore newborn for a few weeks.
